1001 Albums Summary

First listen of this album from start to finish. So many of these songs formed the soundtrack of my teens yet I would never call myself an REM fan. Just looking at the track listing there are 5 great songs, why have I never bought this album? Will listen again to see if the other songs on the album are worth another play. Final song sounded like Nick Drake at the start.

An absolute classic. I remember growing up and asking my dad what life was like before hearing the likes of Bowie, Beatles, Stones etc. He said they played the singles so often on the radio that by the time the album came out it didn't feel like you were hearing it for the first time.

Solid debut album. Seen them live a couple of times during their earlier gigs. So many of their iconic songs on one album. The kind of album you can just keep turning over time after time.

This was the album, or at least the song Chicago, that I first heard of Sufjan Stevens. At that time the 50 state project was a thing. I had heard concept albums before but I think this was the first time I had heard the equivalent of local ballads and folk tales and I was all about that. There is a comedian in the UK called Mark Steel and he often does 'Mark Steel in town' gigs where his routine is all about local places and stories that people will tell him as he prepares for the gig. There is something special about connecting at such a local level that appeals to me and whilst this isn't going to be something to all tastes the effort and love that is poured into the making of you can certainly hear. Even if you just listen to Chicago again and again you will never get sick of it.

An eye opener for someone who has only heard their more famous songs.

Everyday people is such an amazing song. Listening to it as a kid I had no understanding on the meaning of the song, just loved the beat and how it made me move. Love it even more now.

Nae exactly my cup o tea but it was easy to listen to and something I could easily see myself sticking on to be playing in the background to unwind.

Jazz wouldn't be my go to music but it has been lovely to listen to whilst I work. Not too distracting but calming

Never in my life would I have listened to this album if it was not for this website. I can see why its on here though as its good. the singles released where big hits but there are some great songs on here to get the emotions going. I *may* listen to this again
