Some notes made during listen:
"I take their money but I don't feel bad" - based
Would be nice if I could make out a single word she was saying
A glass of tea????
Surprising amount of body horror in this album
Very punk cover of My Generation
Overall good, like the instrumentation and how it's used and I can only assume the lyrics are very deep and meaningful. Should maybe listen again on LSD. However, not particularly the kind of music that excites me. 3/5
Also: No MF DOOM in the entire list of ~1000 albums?? Three whole beastie boys albums but not fucking Madvillainy??? Wtf
I'm sure this would have been the hottest shit around when it dropped, but seeing how far rap has progressed makes it feel very dated. This isn't to say Chuck D isn't a good lyricist or the production isn't good, but it feels far older than say 2pac despite that only barely being the case. That being said, it's fantastic as a piece of conscious music, the messages are very viscerally hammered home in a way I find very satisfying. Also, it's good to see our favourite actor Ice Cube get a spot, even if he gets totally mogged by Big Daddy Kane in the next verse.
3.7/5
Listening notes:
Robert E. Lee mention eek
Tom Lehrer has ensured that I can never take the word 'dixie' seriously
These mfs are CANADIAN???
It's funny how the comments are glazing them like come on it's not all that
Running theme with this album is the intro will make me think "ah this'll be good" and then it's just another country song
Ffs it's happened again
The mater changes on Jawbone are nice
Generally good, although there seems to be a strong negative correlation between how country a song on this album is and how much I like it. There are some good riffs and piano parts but also country music so I'd say it averages out around 3.2
Listening notes:
It's the music from that ad!! Also spider man
That's not how you pronounce "massacre"
That's not how you pronounce the first syllable of "basement". Can't critique the second syllable because it's nowhere to be seen
This is literally the same song again
Interesting uh... vocal delivery
I feel like I've heard this song before approximately 13 times
Good sound, but they can do precisely one thing with it. This feels like the sort of album that's culturally important in the same way that Homo Erectus is evolutionarily important. Blitzkrieg Bop is a banger though
3/5
Listening notes:
Satan mention tally - 1
Omfg that bass tone is incredible
Satan mention tally - 2
Does ozzy need help what's happening
Heavy metal harmonica???
Satan mention tally - 3
Satan mention tally - 4 (same line repeated but I'm counting it)
The two guitars shredding in stereo is so fucking good
Goes hard with call to prayer from local mosque in the background
I thought Satan would be mentioned more tbh very disappointed
Great album, high quality metal with some very good riffs and solos. Probably my favourite of the albums that have come up so far. 4.2/5
Listening notes:
Funny that this is the song that comes next after Liv complained about obnoxious guitar solos in Black Sabbath
Wow this second song is considerably less good than the first one
I would never have thought of recruiting a rabid cat off the street to provide vocals. But I guess I'm not a visionary
I can't tell if that noise was prince or his guitar
There should be more piano in rock songs
Despite what my listening notes might suggest, I really enjoyed this album. Loved the blend of piano and synth with more conventional electric guitar, and the bouncy rhythms. Would be pushing 5 stars if I didn't find some of prince's lyrical delivery a bit annoying. Also Take Me with U. That song is mid as hell.
4.3/5
Nathan waz here
^^^???? Wtf Nathan
Listening notes:
Innovative use of the chalkboard-and-nail as a backing instrument here
I wonder if I can be arsed to look at the lyrics. I guess it is my only chance to know what the fuck the singer's saying
What the fuck is this fucking dehydrated bagpipe-ass song
Was that a fucking parrot or something
This song sounds alright. I wonder what they'll do to make it absolutely unlistenable
Turns out they didn't do anything and it's a decent song. Why do they have to make my job so hard man
Lmfao they put applause in the song cause that's the only way they're going to get any
This album is making me hate art
If I put a lot of effort into making myself like this I might be able to manage
Mr incredible becoming uncanny ahh intro
Why are they smashing fucking bottles now
Pompompompompompompompompom I'm fucking losing it
Is there a motherfucking clown approaching now why is someone walking around in fucking squeaky shoes
What the fuck what why can I understand what he's saying
What if I don't want to humour you
Oh my god it's over
This album makes me feel like logging onto reddit and ragebaiting people about how art has been worthless since the beginning of the 20th century whilst caressing the slightly sticky genshin impact funko pop standing on my desk next to the huge pile of Richard Dawkins books. The really irritating thing is when the singer shuts the fuck up and there's not an angle grinder being used in the background, the music is actually good. In spite of all this, I can conceptually enjoy the crazy mess that is this album in its entirety as a piece of art, albeit one I don't understand in the slightest. All this means is it's getting 2 stars instead of 1 though.
Listening notes:
This is good and all but I don't think these guys have the bars to call themselves 'ill'
Vocal effect got them sounding like they're about to order boneless pizza
Weird for a hip-hop group that some of their best songs are the ones they don't rap on
This production deserves better rapping
A SIX point SEVEN on the richter scale?????
Deez nuts mention. Lyricism at its finest
This is the kind of beat I would expect Mos Def to drop a sick verse on. Shame it isn't
This rhyme scheme is about as diverse as an asnac lecture
I'm really torn with this album. The production is very varied and always fun to listen to. so much so that if the rapping was in any way interesting this album would be a solid 5. What we get instead is the beastie boys trading sets of four sometimes slightly wack bars with rhymes usually only at the end. This still sounds fine, but knocks the rating down to a 3.8
Let's fucking go I was listening to this earlier today
Listening notes:
According to some youtube video I watched the intro to this first song is the inspiration for the horrible histories theme
Forgot how much I liked mansize rooster. Wikipedia says it's about a guy with a huge cock
Damn Gaz Coombes really coming straight with the death threats
Who the hell are the strange ones
I'm a fan of these meter changes
Tf is this guest feature from the minions
Fucking love this album, it's a slightly eccentric brand of rock that I really enjoy. It's also clear that they're more skilled players than their britpop contemporaries, especially on tracks like I'd Like to Know (fucking banger opener btw, that initial four-song run is fantastic). I don't like the second half of the album as much, but it maintains the high quality of the first half except maybe on We're Not Supposed To
4.8/5
Listening notes:
Title track is surprisingly jazzy
Was not expecting That's the way (I like it) being quoted lol
Very grateful for Usha Uthup telling me I'm doing great
Why are there horses sneezing in the background
Composer is really a fan of just putting random noises in here huh
This guy's singing like he wants to restore the Weimar Republic
I should go to bed
Oh my god they said the name of the thing
Quite enjoyed this album. The ballads often didn't really hold my attention but I really liked the instrumental tracks. There were also tracks that I might not enjoy as songs so much but were still nice listening experiences because of their eclectic mix of sounds most notably the second track. Overall I would rate it 3.7/5
Listening notes:
For reasons I don't fully understand my left ear is very blocked with earwax so I won't be getting the full stereo experience for the next few albums.
I thought that car going past was some background effect in the song but no it just seems that every tenth person in mauritius owns a hot rod. Anyway, the music is good
While not really the kind of music that makes me the most excited, it was very well done and an enjoyable listen. 4/5
I can feel the olive oil moving around in my ear (I can explain)
Fuck I'm here for music criticism aren't I
I like it when bass parts are interesting. Hopefully this opinion makes Anish generally less supportive of killing me
Having seen the other reviews I fear I'm being commentarymogged. Maybe I just need to carpet bag extra hard
Hmm yes the erm... phrasing... is very good here. I enjoy the erm... aeolian texture
Well what was the point of that song. It started and then just ended
I just noticed is that a massive horse turd at the bottom of the album cover or something
Nope that wasn't a sound effect thst was just someone beeping their horn
Fun guitar part on this one
My attention has been diverted by a youtube video that has been reccomended to me called "the logistics of pissing in your own mouth". Into my watch later playlist it goes
Elevator music ahh intro
Oh boy this'll be interesting. 72 straight minutes whatever the fuck it is goes on in Eminem's brain. I would also like to add that I accidentally put last album's review in the middle of the listening notes. Whoops
Listening notes:
Wow eminem's been doing this "cancel me I dare you" bs for a long time
Jesus fucking christ straight in with the horrorcore
Norman bates reference is mildly funny
The whiplash from "shady will fucking kill you" to the genuine masterpiece that is Stan is so strong. Maybe Eminem is the first person in history to *not* write better when on psychedelics
It's actually fucking crazy I get chills in the third verse of Stan and then right after it we get "fuck shit ass bitch cunt shoobity doo-wop"
His first word was in third grade?? Bozo
This song makes me feel like cruising around the 313 in my fred flintstone car drinking miluakee's best (please god tell me someone gets this reference)
Interesting to see the continuation of the 'bum on your lips' motif we find across eminem's discography.
It's so satisfying when he crosses the bar line
Fucking hell Columbine reference
Lots of homophobia in this one
Wow a whole minute long skit where he gets his cock sucked
I think he might be from amityville
Xzibit has some fucking hard lines how come I haven't heard of him
Oop here it is eminem's 6 minute long fantasy about killing his wife.
It's genuinely an interesting piece though. More subtle than it sounds I guess
And here we go right from that into "I was high when I wrote this"
More homophobia in this one
This is probably the hardest time I'm going to have rating one of these albums. Not because of the quality of the musicianship - eminem's rhyming and dre's production remain top tier throughout - but because of the actual lyrical content. Some of what he says is genuinely repulsive, and I'm aware this is very much the idea but it gets to a point where you think "what am I condoning by listening to this?" You can do horrorcore without all this relentless misogyny and homophobia, and by god is there a lot of it. It also makes you wonder what the point of it really is, what is he proving by being this provocative? That he can say what he wants? You can surely do that with only *one* joke about raping your own mother, so why are there more? All this aside (and it's a lot to put aside mind you) it's clear that when he puts down the vicodin and takes his right hand from under the table eminem can be a masterful lyricist. This is most clear on 'Stan' and 'Kim', the latter being a harrowing track not just because of its violence but also how vividly he portrays the fractured mental state of the character he's playing. All in all, the album is incredibly well-made and well-rapped, but with the lyrics frequently jerking you out of it with whatever atrocity was lurking in shady's mind when he wrote the track. I find myself able to deal with this in most but certainly not all cases, which knocks down this album that could otherwise be a solid 5 to a 4
Based based based
Listening notes:
I'm sure Alex Kapranos can sing better than this
There will probably be much fewer jokes here than normal because I'm too busy enjoying the album
What is this ramones ahh delivery
Let's fucking go take me out
Immediately followed by dark of the matinée is peak
I quite like the countermelody in the chorus
Surprisingly funky bassline on Auf Achse
I can't listen to the original version of This Fire without thinking about how much better This Fffire is (rerecording of the same song they did later)
This song hella gay
Not a fan of when singers start to go "la la la" but good song otheriwse
Loved this album, I'm a big fan of Franz Ferdinand's sound and they managed to live up to their bigger name songs here. Auf Achse will be going onto my playlist. I probably enjoyed this album more than I Should Coco but I'll give it a 4.75 and say that I ovverated I Should Coco
Also: I'm annoyed that there was a joke I forgot to make in my Eminem review. How annoyed do you ask? Well, have you heard of Chris Christopherson?
Listening notes:
First song not living up to the expectations set up by The Chain so far
They're singing like it's a comic book fight scene
Guitar solo was decent. More of that please
Ooh this is meant to be one of their good ones
It was fine
Guitar riff on this one sounds like generic video game background music for when you enter a farm
Genuinely can't hear anything else it feels like farmer crow is about to ask me to retrieve his flock of sheep in exchange for a health elixir
Go Your Own Way was good
Oh look a piano ballad. Incredible.
Unfortunately piano ballads have a much higher threshold of quality to meet before I properly enjoy them. This one was fine I guess
Let's fucking go The Chain
Shame none of the rest of the album will be as good as that
Very Cantaloupe Island synth part here
The balls in the album cover are so distracting. Once you notice them you notice nothing else. Surely they were intentional
Yeah. This album was good. They have a particular sound that they're very good at, but not one that always hits the mark with me. Still, I can appreciate it well enough and The Chain is a fantastic song so it gets a 4
I feel like the point of this generator is to be exposed to a wide variety of music and I'm completely missing it by only reviewing the albums I already like, but I'll take absolutely any excuse to listen to black holes and revelations.
Listening notes:
Apparently I don't know how to spell 'revelations'
I think this one's in 6/8. That or I'm just stupid
3/4 fuck
I guess there's only one thing left to do now
Oh my god he said the thing
This opinion will probably earn me the eternal disdain of all hardcore muse fans but Starlight is actually a great song
Supermassive Black Hole straight afterwards we're winning
Why was Map of the Problematique not already on my playlist
Was dubious of Soldier's Poem at first with it's farmer-ass riff but it made up for it later
Much as I love Muse their lyrics can be a bit cringe at times
Wholly underwhelmed by Invincible
Enjoying the echoing backing vocals in Assassin
Main riff reappearing in a different instrument? Hell yeah
Ooh yes trumpet as well
Why is Thacikovsky piano concerto playing in the middle of this song
No better way to finish the album than with Knights of Cydonia.
Glorious is so much better than Invincible Why couldn't it be on the main album instead
I like Muse in case you couldn't tell. 4.9/5 (loses out on full marks because if Invincible)
