This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It was very nearly my submission. I was just listening to it not even 4 days ago and I was thinking I am so surprised no one has ever picked them yet. Mark Sandman was really one of the greats and he created so much art before we lost him tragically young. Imagine the immense amount of work we missed out on. If he had made it another 30 years I really think he’d be in the conversation more as one of the great artists of the end of the 20th century. I highly recommend checking out “the sandbox”, a collection of his works. Sadly not on Spotify anymore but it’s around. Also, as a sax player, shout out to some of the STANKIEST sax ever recorded. Fuck!
After that little return to the OG list, it's back to the user list mines for me. I've never heard of this but it has two things I dislike: from the 90s and alt rock. Yet, they did the one thing I've complained about endlessly: they kept it short! This is a brisk 37 minutes and my god does it help. This is the perfect length for this and it doesn't outstay its welcome. If this were 60 minutes it would suck, but at just under 40 minutes its great! It's got a vibe that hits. My personal rating: 4/5 My rating relative to the list: 4/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Slight yes.
Cure for Pain is the second album by alternative rock band Morphine. The instrumentation of Morphine is a bit strange: two-string bass guitar, baritone saxophone and drums. Still this combination works great as the sax gives a dark, jazzy context to the alternative rock style of the band. The compositions and production have not aged a bit. Best track: "Buena"
A fun rock but gimme some horns and bluesy jazzyness kind of trip. Don't mind this at all
Another live album that wasn’t full of screaming fans so you could actually hear the music, which was a bonus. I didn’t hate but didn’t love.
I liked this album when it came out, but I got tired of it pretty quickly. It was nice to revisit it again after all these years. 3 stars.
Vaguely recall this band, possibly this album cover, from the frequently invoked college radio days... the music was not really familiar, maybe just a shadow of recognition with Buena. I didn't follow them further at the time and if I heard about the lead singer's tragic death when it happened it didn't make a lasting impression. They were quite old for that era of alt rock, and bringing a very unique sound and style. This was good, sorry I missed them in their day.
