Meh. Not for me.
How can a song about John Wayne Gacy Jr be so beautiful? This was a mix between The Eels and other 90s surf pop, The Divine Comedy and The Penguin Orchestra. How can you not immediately love a song called “The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out To Get Us!” ?! The instrumentals were a bit too jazzy for me, but overall loved this album.
I simultaneously did not know what to expect and knew exactly what to expect. And I was simultaneously right. And I was disappointed by both.
Surprised to see such a recent album in the list - and not entirely sure why. Not great, not terrible.
Better than I thought it would be. They were a good sounding live band.
I knew more of the songs than I thought I would! Great production but not a keeper for me.
I knew none of these. I could hear elements of War of the Worlds and The Divine Comedy. Didn’t sound like it was from 1973!
I was dreading this, and it was a bit too jazz-like for my tastes, but it was ok. Would I listen again voluntarily? No. Would I turn it off if it came on? Depends how far away the phone is…
Quite nondescript. Nothing outstanding here at all. Would rather re-listen to Count Basie tbh!
I was quite excited by this album - unfortunately for me it did not deliver. I like the Souvenirs song, but nothing else really stood out.
It was enjoyable but probably wouldn’t listen again.
It was pleasant enough, although I really don’t like the track Moondance
I really enjoyed this one but then I do loves me a bit of hip hop. If sounded so fresh, couldn’t believe it was from 2002 - it spoke of topics still relevant today.
It was ok - I don’t really get the mega appeal of the White Stripes, but it was listenable.
I have never heard of this band so was interested to listen. It surprised. I had heard Crash Test Dummies’ version of Androgynous, had no idea it was a cover!
I like Bob Dylan anyway but had only listened to anthologies. I liked this but there were definitely stronger and weaker tracks.
I kinda don’t get the hype, but it was pleasant enough.
A massive surprise! I had no idea what to expect, and somehow it managed to deliver on everything! Definite influence of (or influenced by) Jesus Christ Superstar. And some 50s/60s fun stuff too. So many genres! I did feel this would have been more enhanced by drugs….
It was pleasant enough but probably won’t listen again.
Wow. What an album. Pretty cool. Definitely an influence on the divine comedy
A nice surprise. Couldn’t believe it was 2009.
It was ok. Didn’t set my world on fire
Had never listened to a full BB album before - I liked it. Went on to listen to another one which I didn’t like so much. Think I need to be in the mood for something like this.
Short and sweet
Took me right back to my early 20s. Loved it.
Haven’t ever listened to a full Rolling Stones and was surprised at the different styles of music on it.
Nice album.
Thankfully it was short. Jazz is not my thing.
Love me a bit of Paul Simon
His voice was deeper than I expected it to be. Not my kinda rap music, can’t see the hype.
I listened to it 3 or 4 times.
Loved it. Sought out more of their music afterwards. I’m now a fan.
Not my thing. Too jazzy.
Not my favourite Roxy Music music.
Weird. Very weird. But fun also.
I really enjoyed this album. Went and listened to Graceland by Paul Simon afterwards
Actually really enjoyed this - and enjoyed the resulting Spotify recommended playlist too!
Not my thing.
I enjoyed this, but not a huge fan of the guitar solos, which I’m sure true Van Halen fans do.
I thought “Let’s keep gettin’ it on” was a parody…
It was ok. Didn’t rock my world.
It was ok. Was never a fan of Lovefool and the rest was in a similar vein.
Didn’t really make an impact. But didn’t offend.
Track one - did not enjoy. Few tracks after that quite enjoyed, but not my usual music.
Apart from Dreaming of You, I found everything else quite dull. Sorry.
It was ok. Haven’t heard of this band or any of their music. Bit unmemorable.
Hadn’t listened to much Kate Bush other than singles - quite enjoyed, especially her cockney voice.
It was pretty cool and knew more songs than I thought
I like the Smiths but hadn’t heard this album in full. Really enjoyed it.
It was ok. Again, didn’t rock my world.
Very New Order
I enjoyed this more than I thought. China girl was awesome.
Didn’t listen all the way through. I don’t like jazzy Van Morrison. Don’t like jazz.
I knew one of their songs, who knew?? It was ok but not amazeballs
The first track was awful - hurt my ears! The rest was ok.
A nice surprise. Quite like the Maccabees.
I love me some Waylon Jennings.
I’m glad I’ve listened. I liked Spoilt Victorian Child 😅
It’s classic Ray Charles. You either like it or you don’t.
It was ok. Probably wouldn’t listen again by choice.
Loved it. Knew all the songs but hadn’t listened to them all together
It wasn’t the beach boys
Just ok tbh
I didn’t know what to expect but I quite enjoyed it
It sounded very similar to June Carter and family - but not similar enough
I liked. Would I listen again voluntarily? Prob not.
It was obviously good production. But just a bit dull on first listen. I’m sure subsequent listens would get under the skin.
It was totally not what I was expecting. In a good way. But a bit too dreamy for me.
Pleasantly surprised! Recognised the song “two weeks” from an advert. Very Maccabee vibes.
Nope. Sorry, still don't get Radiohead.
Nice album but apart from the singles the others didn’t really hit the mark for me.
Bit too jazzy for my liking - but nice to hear
A couple of gems.
It was ok. Not very memorable tbh.
First time listening to a whole PSB album. It was ok.
Very long album - would have to be a super fan to listen to it all!
‘Twas ok. No bangers but I bet I would like it if I was in the right frame of mind/location
No. Not for me.
I was excited by this one as I had the album when it came out. But was still disappointed. Also though it was Maverick Strike with no A - you live and learn
Bit boring tbh
Nope.
Samey. Probably needs a proper listen on a record player for full effect
Ok - recognised at least one song (stepping stone)
I really enjoyed the first few tracks - then it got very samey. Very radio 2
It was interesting. Couldn’t get the Shirehorse’s “Frank Spencer Blue’s Explosion” out of my head 😆
Took me back….
Interesting to hear the song sampled by Basement Jaxx
A good listen. You can tell the singles
Wasn’t as bad as I thought but not for me
I am liking the Boss
Nice to hear a whole album
I enjoyed the street life song but the rest was a bit too jazzy for me.
Not sure if I’ve heard any Rush before - but I thought I had. Weird.
Better than I thought. But long.
It was interesting to hear more Janis Joplin. Very distinctive voice 😄
Nice to hear some non-single Lauper tunes
Lovely classic
Good album, but not a fan enough for all the live stuff. Which sounds just like the recording studio stuff anyway, they that good.
Classic
Did not listen. I have heard enough before to know I don’t want to. I don’t get the hype.
Meh. Not for me.
Classic Elvis
Yeah boiiiiiiii
DNF - a bit dull
I don’t get it
Classic Zep
It was ok
Bit religious
Not for me. Metallica yea, megadeth nah
Amazing
Ok. I preferred the great escape
Love it
Classic
Weird story but love the music
Not bad
Have never heard of this band before. It was ok.
A couple of classics
Classic
Long but some beauts
It was ok. Nice to listen to but kinda wanted to listen to other people’s versions
IDGI
Meh
I liked. And I knew at least one!
It was ok. Interesting to hear them reference fake news
Not for me. Racist language made me uncomfortable.
Some more language
Nah. But glad I listened
jAzZ 🤦♀️
Not too bad but not mah thang
Classic Who. Great live band.
Nope
Classic
Love Ms Jackson
Nice sound
Not at all what I expected. I quite liked.
Ok.
Nice to hear again
Classic. Sounds the same as he does now
A couple of belters.
I had never heard of them but this album was really enjoyable
No bangers for me
I never really got Hendrix.
Classic Bowie
Wow. Did not know that Dolphins was a cover by Billy Bragg. Great voice. Bit psychedelic at the end.
Never properly listened to her music before
Ok. Can hear some influences but didn’t light me up.
It was ok. I prefer the Beatles.
I liked!
Not much of the album was on Spotify 😔
It was ok considering it was psychedelic
Interesting. Short.
I enjoyed. Classic.
Heart emoji. I love finding out that artists have written songs I thought belonged to others.
Interesting to hear, but a bit too jazzy
Classic.
Nice to hear some more flaming lips
Nice bit o’system
Classic.
Different sound to the one I am used to
Nice to hear some more beach boys
It was ok
I have listened to this many times - I love it
Saw this performed live (not Mike Oldfield, but approved by him). Very atmospheric.
Interesting person. With a few more listens could enjoy more
Classic. So many hits.
Without the context of why this is on the list, I was confused. It is so edited and produced it is almost unlistenable. It’s the vocal equivalent of bad photoshop. Which is shame because I’m sure she has amazing talent, it’s just hidden by production.
Had never heard of this band before. But had heard their influence through Greenday. Big time.
I don’t get it
Nice to hear a whole album
Some songs that have not aged well
Was ok
Nice to hear a whole album
Classic
Not for me
Nice.
Nice to hear a whole album
Looked intimidating but was good!
I am not the target audience
Didn’t speak to me
Nice, but it’s not my kinda music
I liked the radio playlist that Spotify created after this
Once again, nice to hear a whole album of stuff from an artist I hear on the radio.
My heart sank when I saw the cover - oh no, another jazz album, I thought. But I was pleasantly surprised! Some really lovely music.
Groovin’! Did not know this was theirs. Classic 60s.
Not as bad as I first thought. I have a thing against Radiohead for some reason.
Some uncomfortable language, but rightly so. And of course, some classics.
Love me a bit of Cat Stevens/Yusuf.
It was no Americana - but still a good sound
Too much
Classic PS. Would I listen again? Probably not.
Never knew I knew any of these - quite enjoyed
I wasn’t in the mood for this album so don’t feel it got the best side of me. Can certainly hear it’s influence in other music.
Nice to hear a full album again
🎶straight outta the 80s🎶 I was immediately at an 80s dinner party with nouvelle cuisine and black dinner plates. Didn’t like this album then, don’t like it now!
It wasn’t as annoying as I was expecting but won’t be played at my funeral.
No bangers on there, but a lovely 80s sound
Some bangers. But the unknowns haven’t stuck
Not as heavy as I remember. But it’s not my go-to music.
Not what I expected. Eclectic and yet still missed the mark for me. I must be more difficult to please than I thought.
Have only ever really heard Autobahn before, and even then only snippets really. I can imagine really liking this if I had heard this in my formative years.
I don’t think I’m the demographic.
Narp. Soz.
Bit bland tbh. Like most other artists of their era. I think I need to book so that I can find out why some artists are included and can contextualise.
Love.
Eclectic mix. I like the different samples and styles.
Classic
Another classic. Some different versions of songs - funny how we prefer the version we first here mostly. Or I do anyway.
Oh gosh, why?!
I tried to listen without prejudice - and it worked! A few of these tracks were overplayed in my youth but enough time had passed for me to be able to hear the talent.
Love love love.
It’s. Nirvana. Need I say more?
I had never heard of these and they did not totally suck. They also have not totally stuck so…..
Lovely voice. Eclectic mix of music. Went and listened to some Dolly Parton after this.
Some questionable attitudes to women here. Not a fan.
My first thought was “oh, do I have to?” Then I listened and there was some good bops - but I can’t get away from what he has been accused of.
Did not know what to expect and was still surprised. Not my thing but not bad.
Was not able to listen to this on Spotify - but found the 1001 album podcast so it wasn’t all bad! And then made the switch to Apple music and job's a goodun. Bit different to what I was expecting, but still good.
Could only listen to one song as that was all that was available on Spotify. But it wasn’t bad.
Interesting album with a story thread. And some talent which I had never fully appreciated before.
It was not what I expected. Love the thought that some kids made it big and now are doing normal jobs. Or working in the music industry as titans of pop.
I enjoyed. Could hear many bands in them that they obviously have influenced. But did get a bit samey after a while.
Pleasantly surprised. Thought they’d be more rock or more…something else
Sorry - couldn’t listen to it all. Jazz trumpet just isn’t my bag y’know? It’s not jazz, it’s me. I’m sure I’m a different time and place, smoking gauloise and drinking red wine I might find it more tolerable….but alas not today.
🎶on a rope, on a rope, got me hanging on a rope🎶 Did not know that I knew this band! It was good, but I won’t seek out more of their music
Really not my thing, but was surprised by how musical the music was. Like it was a really well put together album but I’m just not into shouty gravel vocals.
I enjoyed, but not as much as the last album by LCD sound system.
Thank you, next (I just don’t like jazz)
Nope.
It was ok but did not set my world on fire.
No thank you
Did not blow me away, but did not bore me either. Cannot now remember any of the tracks though.
I try and put myself in the mindset of a young adult in the past, getting my hands on the vinyl of this album, and just listening with no other distractions (like the internet…). And it still didn’t do it for me
I didn’t listen to it all but I got the idea. I didn’t enjoy the samples, especially the “what does it all mean”, which is used by someone else in another song. I’m tired. Brain not work.
Oh no. I’m not that kind of girl.
Classic Beatles - but nothing I haven’t heard before
Interesting. 2020 album in the top 1001. I’d like to know the history. Was good.
I was more of a Great Escape fan and I always felt occluded from liking this one. It doesn't feel as accessible as The Great Escape.
I cannot believe this album is from the 90’s - in many ways it still sounded so fresh. Some definite Princess Superstar vibes in there - but ultimately not my go-to genre.
Nice to hear double Dutch and buffalo gals (or whatever it’s called) in context. But I’m these days it does feel a bit like cultural appropriation
Well. Sweet voice but some problematic material.
I very much enjoyed. Surprised myself.
Classic NWA.
Love JC
I couldn’t listen all the way through. It was a bit of an assault on my ear drums. I was not in the mood to be challenged in that way.
What the actual??? I don’t know what the artist was on when they recorded this and I don’t know what I would have to be on to enjoy this. No, just no.
Not as I expected - but not my go to sound
It was good - no tracks I knew but that didn’t matter too much.
Not as brash as I remember AC/DC being - bit my kind of music generally but I enjoyed.
Surprised to see such a recent album in the list - and not entirely sure why. Not great, not terrible.
Was ok. Not my usual jam
All a bit samey
I wanted to like but it just didn’t get under my skin
Wow. Just wow. Something for everyone here. I didn’t expect to like it but I LOVED it.
Wasn’t really feeling it
Was ok, didn’t do much for me though.
Very enjoyable. Took me back to the early 2000s when I was introduced to this. Nothing Else Matters will always be a song for me and an ex. And Don’t Tread On Me is just ace.
I really quite enjoyed this. Heard some interesting influences (divine comedy and others). Would listen again.
It was an interesting album. I did enjoy.
A bit something and nothing.
I appreciate the production and musicality, but not my jam.
Once again, not my jam. But could appreciate the musicality.
Dis my jam. Although, I did. It realise how many of these had been parodied by Mark and Lard so could not take them all seriously. Still loved it though.
Loved it! Some great bass lines
I enjoyed - although not sure if the messages of murder and misogyny are real?
Some bangerzzzz. Not as drug fuelled a mess as I was half expecting. Proper talent o can only dream of.
Love me some Willie - but prefer other albums to this
I so want to love Bowie - but it just doesn’t get under my skin. I think I need the right circumstances for this to have meaning for me. That doesn’t detract from his talent.
I did not hate this as much as I was expecting to! It was fun, even though I knew nothing of what they sang.
So ambient I am having a hard time having a feeling about it. Nope.
Nah.
I like the singles, and I like the collabs with other artists. But other than that, Mr Cent was not singing the songs for me. But then I don’t think he was trying to…
Did not know what to expect from this as I was not aware of this band. But it was pleasantly pleasing. Would I listen again? Probably not. But would I mind listening again? No, I didn’t hate it.
No thank you.
I had to skip a couple of skits - nobody wants some of those sounds in their ears (if you know, you know). And I don’t know what makes artists like this different but their music is somehow more accessible. I liked, I enjoyed, but it won’t be going on a playlist anytime soon (also, could only listen to some of the songs on the Spotify).
Love me some Dusty. Great voice, great collection of songs. Some ahead of their time (You don’t own me), others less so….
I was excited for this one. Then Nasty Girl came on and I was like woah. No. Not ok Bey. The singles were a bop though.
Classic Siouxsie. Great if you like the sound, grates a bit if you’re not totally into it.
No thank you.
It says something when I can listen to this longer than I can listen to an ambient music album. Having said that, I don’t really understand this type of music. Could not believe it was from so long ago also!
Unfortunately I cold my listen to most of it because it’s not on Spotify. But I did do a lil run through of the classics and I enjoyed.
It didn’t get under my skin.
Was quite excited for this one as I knew at least one song, butt actually found it quite dull. Sorry.
Pleasant to listen to - the rhythm of the words was very soothing
I enjoyed!
Alright.
Good timing, what with the Elvis biopic out in cinemas. In The Ghetto always gets me.
I really enjoyed this, even though it was a long album. Brought a new dimension to some of the songs.
Just a bit too much Ray in one go for me.
I knew more than I thought! It was a nice enough album but didn’t go into my all te too 5 albums from this list.
Adored. Did not know bohemian rhapsody was from this album, was a nice surprise!
One of my all time top five faves. Love love love.
Had never heard of these but it was kinda funky - in a good way. But probably won’t seek out any more of their music.
Not bad <Obama face>
Futurama has ruined Beck for me. All I can think of is the rhyming Becktionary, dammit.
I enjoyed. A lot more musical than I remember it being.
Had no knowledge of this artist before. They were enjoyable to listen to. Well done!
It was ok. Can see where he influenced Nick Cave. Also, Story of Issac very similar to a Dire Straits song?? (32 - 37 seconds) or at least another song I’ve heard. It will come to me.
A few hits but a lil dull for my liking. Soz.
I got confused Between this artist and Jane’s Addiction so I was very surprised to hear what I heard! It was ok, my husband doth love her work. Me less so. But that’s my problem, not anyone else’s.
Surprisingly good listen. And only surprisingly because I am uncultured enough to have not listened to them before.
I don’t do Jazz
I very much enjoyed. Took me right back to when I Bet You Look Good On The Dance-floor came out. I am in one particular room in the house I used to clean. Memories are funny aren’t they.
Some people have a very high opinion of themselves….that’s not a comment on the musicality because it was a very polished album, but the lyrics were laughable at times.
Woah. what a patchwork. Accordion, harpsichord, bagpipes maybe?? Not for me but what a ride.
First time of listening to whole album. Enjoyed but not a convert.
An eclectic little mix of music. Some skits, one song I knew. But as soon as you see a song titled “Slut” it’s off the playlist and into the bin.
This took me back. Good album. But not one that I would listen to during the normal course of my day.
Yeah. Alright. But I still don’t like beetlebum.
I’m trying to work out when this album would sound at its best, but I don’t think 6:30am on day 5 of the summer holidays is it. I mostly enjoyed the sounds, the lyrics less so. But I didn’t get it and it didn’t get me.
Interesting to hear a massive riff elastics used. Other than that made no real impression I’m afraid, other than to not disappoint.
It was alright. For a band I didn’t know and had never heard of, they did not disappoint.
Interesting to hear his less-poppy stuff. But had to go and listen to the pop album after that 😅
Like, were these songs that musical when we first heard them?? Did the 80s heavy metal fans hear it but all we could hear was gravelly screeching, and now the passing of time has work away the hard outer layer and we can hear the beauty beneath?? Whatever the reason, this album was much more enjoyable than I expected.
I enjoyed - I do like a Buddy Holly track. But it was just a lil much, a whole album. Sad story though.
Love a bit of JJ.
Good. And that’s what they needed, validation from me. I’m glad I could oblige. Perhaps their career will take off now? Who knows.
Couldn’t listen on Spotify ☹️ But I bet it was good.
S’ok
Not sure if I would have liked them when they came out. Not sure if I like them now.
I heart this album. Some crackers.
Did not hate.
I think I’m more of a greatest hits fan…but some interesting tracks o hadn’t heard.
Me likely. Good sound. Very warm and brown.
Found on Apple Music! Not a massive Neil Young fan but appreciate his political stance with his music.
Surprisingly mellow and pleasant. Not sure why, but I thought it was going to be more rock.
Classic Al.
Sadly not on the old Spotify 🙁
Fairly enjoyable for someone who was not a big-hair-rock fan.
Surprisingly mellow - well, probably not surprising for those who were already fans, but for some reason I thought it would be a bit more prog-rocky and inaccessible. I really liked the musicality of this.
I very much enjoyed. The whole album was almost too much, but wasn’t. I enjoyed the Spotify radio that ensued afterwards too.
Once again, not as much hard rock as I expected. Still not a huge fan but I appreciated the opportunity to listen.
Sadly unmemorable, both from the time and from when I listened yesterday.
My heart sank. I don’t know what it is about me and Radiohead but I just don’t get the hype, and especially not for this album. I don’t even like the Mark & Lard’s The Shirehorses spoof album “Our Kid Eh” which has very little Radiohead related content. Go figure.
I lil sink of the heart again as for some reason I took against the Manics in the 00s. I enjoyed this album. Not a full concert but my hate has subsided.
Meh.
Woah, 1001 albums, just chill ok? I get this one on 9th September 2022. I was shooketh, as was the nation. Anyhoo, love a bit of Smiths so it is all good.
Fab.
Classic MJ. Great songs, some questionable lyrics these days. But can’t really get over the tarnishing of his character tbh.
Once again, nice to hear a whole album from such a well known band/artist. Some slightly different musical styles but in the whole a good ok RS collection.
Too. Much. Folk.
Yeah. Can see why they are so big
I’m just not a big fan of drum solos, I don’t care who is doing it. Come to think of it, not a huge fan of any solos (exception: Hans). It’s just showing off really.
Move to hear some non-chart stuff. Although you can’t beat the chart stuff.
Niiiiiiiice. I enjoyed the eclectic mix. Some very random songs and I am here for it.
No. Nope. Not for me. I wish I understood the appeal of such music but I just don’t. Like steak and red wine, my palette has just never warmed to electronic music.
Enjoyable, but I think they would be better live than on a recording.
I like, but there’s such a thing as too much saxophone (apologies to Kenny G)
Nope.
It was ok and I’m glad I listened, but won’t be seeking out again.
Very much enjoyed.
I wasn’t going to listen because electronic debt generally float my boat. But I did listen. And in part I’m glad I did. It has a lil Skrillex sound, which I’m here for. But on the whole it wasn’t for me.
Same old same old. But still good.
I was more team Blur back in the day. But I did still appreciate the musicality of the Oasis camp. This album was better than I remember it and very polished. Don’t quite understand how the Gallagher brothers managed it.
Welp, I had no idea who this was or what to expect. It was a strange little mix. And I was convinced that the lead singer was Carl Anderson from Jesus Christ Superstar. Boy was I wrong. I enjoyed listening, and wouldn’t mind listening again, but i won’t be seeking them out.
I think I just listened to someone’s stream of consciousness for 41 minutes. No.
Nice. Mucus from a time when lyrics didn’t need to be deep and meaningful and yet still managed to be.
Yeah. It’s alright.
I knew one of these songs from the Breaking Bad soundtrack. I enjoyed but as a novelty only.
It surprised me, but not enough to listen again.
Classic. But the language.
I’m sure if I saw this performed in an old timey club it would have more impact than listening at 5am in rural Britain.
Nope.
Nice. Classic. Do wop that thing.
It matched the start to my work day. A bit dull and I was glad when it was over. But nah, seriously, it’s just not my kind of music, but I appreciate the effort.
I enjoyed, especially the spoken opening line 😄
I listened on a Friday. Couldn’t remember anything about it by Monday.
Classic.
Loved! My kinda electro music
Short and….anything but sweet! You’d feel ripped off if you’d paid £7.99 for a cassette tape with only 16 minutes of content.
I mean - a classic. What more can be said?
I listened to this one fairly recently because I watched a documentary on the Go-Gos. It’s a classic album, but would it speak to me as much if I hadn’t watched the doc? Not sure. Also - another one you’d be disappointed to spend £7.99 on a cassette tape to find it was only 35 minutes long!!
Quite enjoyable, not my music of choice though. Liked hearing bits that are referenced in not contemporary music.
Not for me I’m afraid.
No thank you
Nah. I’ve had a run of albums that don’t do it for me so my judgement may be clouded. However, I’m good value for money if you bought the cassette.
It was unobtrusive and I ended up listening a few times. But can’t really remember it now.
I was really pleasantly surprised by this album. Loved it.
Oh my. The range of emotions on seeing this as my album and then starting listening. “Roni Size? Do I know them? (Start listening) oh yes I do know them! (Keeps listening) quite like this (continues listening) oh no (looks at length of album) oh no no no (turns music off)”
Yeah. Liked. The one sided interview at the end was a trip. The song about the kid who died in Hiroshima was unexpected.
It’s a bop.
38 minutes. 3 songs. But it was ok! I think someone just forgot to put breaks in Between the songs tbh, it didn’t feel like 3 massively long songs 😆
Enjoyed. But only because I enjoy a bit of Bob anyway. Not sure how I wills have reacted if this was my first outing with him.
Hounds of Love - more like Sounds of Love, am I right? Big heart for this album.
I very much hearted this album. Yes, hearted as in I loved it.
I was transported back to 1996 and a Little Chef on the way back from Manchester where I purchased this album. I didn’t understand it then but loved the music. Yay for innocence.
Eclectic. Classic.
Yeah. Classic.
I gritted my teeth before pressing play - although this album was from 2010, I was still concerned. I found it very hard to disconnect what we know about Ye now and what/where he was then. I feel really sorry for him, he’s obviously going through a lot of stuff, and all while in the public eye. Doesn’t mean I like what he has to say even if he does say it in an impressive way. And he can’t sing. There, I said it.
Blast from the past. But I can’t get over the fact that someone I knew from school was so obsessed with Travis that they wrote the lyrics all round their room. Bad memories.
Jazz - if I wanted to listen to this kind of noise I would let my child have at the iPad, iPod touch and telly while on a Teams meet. No. Being able to keep time while others ignore the beat is not big or clever.
S’alright. Not totally my thing but I did not shudder at the thought of listening to it like some albums.
Not really for me but it did not offend thine ears too much.
Nope.
Yeah, it’s was ok. But probably won’t listen again.
This one was slightly better than the 2010 album I listened too, but just made me want to listen to the album with the hits (college dropout?) Still can’t disassociate the music from the man.
He was about 28 when this album was released, but he sounds so old. Not always so wise, but old. It was worth listening to hear some tracks which were not released.
OK, but none of the hits. And quite over stylised some might say.
Classic. Questionable lyrics but they were different times.
Awesome voice and talent. Did make me want to listen to the Commitments album though 😁
Why so many covers? Not for me I’m afraid. Plus, I’m on team Riley….
Not for me.
This album has one of my favourite songs on (Last Living Rose), and some other songs.
I was transported back to a time where this music was too old and too heavy for me. Funny how so much time can pass and yet things remain the same. Also, sorry NIN, like the Zutons and Valerie, Hurt is not your song anymore. Good job.
I mean, I like me come country music. But this was a bit much.
I enjoyed very much. Quite eclectic.
I noped out half way through. Gave me awesome Toejam and Earl Megadrive game feels though.
Bit too dark and brooding for me. But was different to what I was expecting.
I enjoyed a lot. Very interesting character.
I really enjoyed this. A few memories unlocked. Goddess on a Hiway in particular.
What a blast from the past. I knew more than I thought I would. And was transported back to my youth. Pleasantly surprised.
I thought I had listened to this recently, but I either hadn’t or had not listened to it properly. It’s awesome.
I hadn’t listened to any Doors really before - apart from the cinema-famous ones. Tbh I can’t see why they were so big - but that’s more my issue than anyone else’s!
If I had not seen the artist I would have thought it was Bowie. I enjoyed.
I liked and I enjoyed. In my head, Supertramp are a bit of a jokey band and I have absolutely no grounds for that except possibly their name. It’s a little too close to Super Trooper.
Oh gawd, not an album to listen to if you’ve got the January blues.
Interesting to listen to but not on my all time top five list of anything.
This is the OG “write the theme tune, sing the theme tune”. Amazing talent but instrumental soundtracks aren’t really my thing.
Inoffensive. Which as a review is probably offensive to the Stooges.
Very 80s. Back in the day when 12” versions were much sought after, but did feel a bit like all filler no killer.
I enjoyed this more than I was expecting to. Quite varied whole still being true to style. But not something I would return to of my own volition.
I very much enjoyed. I also liked watching the video of Come on Eileen (how it should have sounded). Although I couldn’t really hear the difference…
Not an album of hits but very good. I thought the term “cost of living” was new for some reason, but obviously not
A pleasant enough voice with questionable lyrics and quite bland music. I couldn’t help thinking, who is this album for? And when would one listen to it? The thought provoking “if you think you’re lonely now” just made me think “I’d rather be lonely than be with this misogynistic bar steward”
No bangers. But his voice. His voice.
Great voice, great lyrics, great talent. I can see why people might not like Adele, but I’m a big fan. Glad she hasn’t gone the way of other great, young talents and joined the 27 club.
It was a January Monday morning when I was assigned this album. I was unsure if I could handle it. Turns out I could. Not half as hardcore dancey as I half remembered.
It was ok. I thought it would be a bit more trippy than it was, but it was quite tame.
I enjoyed very much - I do love the Beatles. Although you do realise just how boring the subject topic of love is when you have album after album of it. Help! is my favourite album I think. So I listened to that straight after.
I started out surprised at such a new album on the list, then realised that 2018 was 5 years ago. I enjoyed to begin with, it was country pop like early Taylor Swift, but a bit more country. Then I got called into a meeting and by the time I’d come back the spell was broken and I found it grating yet dull. Sorry hun.
I don’t generally like live albums because of the sound and the songs are played differently and audience sounds. However this one was brilliant. The sound was clear and crisp and showed just what a voice Sam Cooke has.
I enjoyed this more than I expected - I think I should have that on my gravestone I use the phrase so often 😄 It was quite eclectic and had reminisces of Maccabees, Editors, Elbow….not unpleasant.
Yeah. Enjoyable. Paint it Black is an undeniable classic. Still don’t get the appeal of Mick Jagger but hey, I’m just one person.
I don’t know what it is meant to be. It was all over the shop. I tried to enjoy it but it was a chore.
Picture the scene - it’s a January Monday, you’ve just turned on weekend listening but were busy from Friday til now which means you’ve got four bad boys to listen to. This is the last one but you’re done. You should have had a palette cleanser, a little break to listen to some comfort blanket music of your own, but no, you’re stubborn. You tired, you really tried - you put yourself in the shoes of your disaffected boyfriend when you were a teenager who listened to this kind of music, but to no avail. You just didn’t get it. Sorry James, I didn’t understand you then and I don’t understand you now. Peace out.
Yeah, no. I know it’s supposed to be a classic but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
I enjoyed this album and liked to imagine myself back in the 80s when this came out, what the response would have been. Sad that I will never get to see them live, but theme the breaks.
Yeah classic. Love it.
I was 14 when this came out and I still remember every word. I am the perfect demographic for this album and it shows. Love love love.
I don’t know what I expected but it wasn’t this. Interesting and pleasantly short.
When I was a teenager an admirer made me a mix tape with songs to woo me with. They were songs that explained how they felt about me, about us, about the situation. Girl From Mars was on it, and to this day I’m not entirely sure it was flattering. Anyhoo, not really for me.
Very much enjoyed. Bravo.
I love me a bit of gangster rap - but this was a lil much for a Tuesday morning in rural England. Soz.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this album when it came out, and time has not worked its magic to change that. Next time you listen to it, imagine her singing without the music… And that’s not to say she hasn’t got an amazing voice, she has, just not on this album.
I did a little dance for joy when this one came up - it was like going on a blind date, turning up to the venue to discover it was an old friend. Neither of you are romantically interested in each other, but both relish the impromptu opportunity to hang out again. Not a disappointing or wasted evening at all, and served to remind you how much fun you have together and you should do it again soon.
It was ok - missing Mr Tambourine Man though
I like Brown Sugar as long as I don’t think about the meaning. I also like Wild Horses. The rest kinda smushed into one in my head.
I may have heard too many parodies before hearing the real thing…also he has the kind of voice that makes cough to clear their throat. Not a huge fan.
It was ok. Would I listen again? No. Do I respect the talent? Yes.
Love love love! I mean, I thought Abba Gold was where it was at, but this little gem was hiding! (FYI, I have not, nor am I inclined to watch Mama Mia, so there).
Yep. Liked this one.
I feel very uncultured, but it was a bit too jazzy for me, soz.
Yeah, it was alright. Didn’t know what to expect so wasn’t disappointed and at some points was quite pleasantly surprised. Will instantly forget the whole album though, obvs.
Albums like this take me back to the days when albums were on cassettes or vinyl, and you pretty much had to listen to all songs in sequential order, with a break in the middle to turn over the medium. There would also be excitement over new albums released, new music wasn’t as readily available then as it is now. I started off thinking, who would listen to this album and still be excited about it? Wouldn’t it be a massive disappointment? So I researched to get more perspective and it worked. JJ broke boundaries and was a political woman of colour that was even more rare than now. She had a platform and she used it well. The music isn’t for me, but then that’s the point, the music wasn’t made for me. I have full respect though.
Interesting. I had never heard of this artist. It was at times like Sade crossed with Suzanne Vega crossed with Alanis Morissette.
Well. I had never listened to much Elbow save for the stuff on the radio back in the day. One Day Like This had been played to death and tbh I was a little worried about listening to it - but apparently 10 years is long enough to be able to listen to it with fresh ears and it hit different. Thoroughly enjoyed.
It was ok to me, but didn’t stand out as anything spectacular that must enter my ears frequently in the future.
Yes. Awesome. So many classics. Annie Lennox is a legend - and also nice to have a group where people remember the female member rather than the male 😂
Funny thing - when I was absentmindedly listening it didn’t really hit any nerves, good or bad. But as soon as I started actively listening it was a big no. Once again, perhaps 5:30 am after a good night sleep is not the optimal time or mind-frame in which to be listening.
I did not have the impact on me that I’m sure it would have had on other people. Can appreciate the talent and the production. Can also hear the influence it may have had on Lin Manuel Miranda for Hamilton.
It’s quite the audition piece for a film score, but personally I think it is style over substance. I found it quite dull. I also found the song “Little 15” quite problematic, so much so I had to google it. Turns out it’s about a 15 year old boy rather than a 15 year old girl, and it may or may not be his mum singing to him - so slightly less problematic but still. Some 80s songs need to be retired. I’m looking at you Sting (Don’t Stand So Close To Me) and you Heaven 17 (Come Live With Me)
I did not know what to expect, was really pleasantly surprised, then disappointed. It got a bit samey and not-for-me. You win some, you lose some and sorry Lambchop, you didn’t win me.
I had never listened to a whole album of Supergrass, just the singles really. It was ok but hadn’t made me want to listen to more. Sorry.
Nothing, in my opinion, will ever tip Love Shack. I have never liked Rock Lobster and I don’t really get the band so it wasn’t really for me I’m afraid.
Look, cards on the table, I listen to Absolute Radio 80s a lot. I briefly switched to radio 2 to hear the last Ken Bruce show then went straight back. I’m an 80s girl through and through and means a certain amount of Duran Duran. But honestly? This was too much. Nobody needs 150 consecutive minutes of DD, well at least not me anyway.
An unknown album and artist to me. The opening track was reminiscent of the Avett Brothers track “I and love and you”, which came 10 years after this. The rest of the album didn’t grab me as much as the first track but will definitely seek out more.
I noped out of listening to the whole album. Once again, an album that should not be listened to at 5am after a really good night’s sleep.
I remember this coming out and what a stir it made. Take me out is still great but the rest is a lil middle of the road now.
Mr Wendall is a classic. The rest was a bit meh. But I haven’t underestimated the impact this band has had. The fact I can still remember some of the words to Mr Wendall is testament to that.
Nah. Less than 24 hours since I listened and I can’t remember it at all. Has not hit the spot.
Omg, I’m having a Madonna crisis…the previous album I listened to (Ray of Light) opened my ears to the fact Madonna does not have a strong singing voice and I can’t unhear it. I thought I loved this album but actually - nope. One song really got me in the feels though - Promise to Try - but it was the lyrics more than the delivery. Possibly? I don’t know anymore. But whatever, Madonna doesn’t and shouldn’t care what I think. You go girl!
I don’t know what but I just don’t like Santana. I tried again, op ion not changed.
You know what, I saw this and thought who the heck needs over two hours of Happy Mondays? Turns out 2 hours didn’t feel like 2 hours so I shall eat my words. I enjoyed.
What the actual heck did I listen to? Not the whole album that’s for sure. It’s like jazz, the people most entertained by this album are surely the people who made it. Certainly not me.
Meh. I’m sure they’re in someone’s all time top five favourite bands of the 90s but not mine.
The singles are good, but the rest is a bit much. Unless you like that sort of thing.
I found this album quite timeless, it has not aged. However, has not made me want to look up the back catalogue so…
I’ll admit I did not listen to the whole album. I did not need to hear mono and live versions of the tracks. The famous songs are good - the other songs not so. Sorry super fans, I don’t get the hype.
I just don’t get the appeal. I don’t like the subject matter, I don’t like the execution of said subject matter, and I don’t like the preying on young female fans and getting away with it. It’s a no from me.
It was quite timeless, but that didn’t make it good.
Classic Bowie. That’s it, that’s the review.
Eclectic. Not a patch on For What It’s Worth, but hey they can’t all be hits.
Oh the memories. The style is still a bit jolting but once you get your head round it I liked the journey it took me on.
Did they just stick a pin in a map and write songs?? It was a lil flat. Bring on disco Bee Gees.
I remember this when it came out and how jarring it was because it was so different. It is less jarring now but still not a huge fan.
Another Supergrass album?? I mean it was alright, but if I had died before hearing this I would have had no regrets.
I wasn’t sorry what to expect and was pleasantly not disappointed. It was a bit generic, but then it could be those that came after that copied them. Who knows.
Great voice, but not my thing.
Sorry, really not my thing.
It was ok. It’s quite hard to judge without knowing the context in which this album is on the list.
Interesting. Was not really aware of them but they were quite listenable.
I think a whole album was a bit much - I think it would benefit from a little (Richard) and often approach.
Took me back to my youth. It’s a pleasant enough album.
It was ok. No hits that I had known, but great voices.
Yep. Liked it. A nice mix of styles.
I’m not a massive Stevie Wonder fan, but this was quite pleasant.
It was ok, not my thing though.
Not bad. I knew a couple of tracks. I gotta feeling they’re underrated but hey.
I enjoyed. They are a Christmas band in my eyes though 😂
I did enjoy to a point, but it was not quite my Tuesday morning vibe
I knew more tracks than I thought I would. I think I prefer the covers of their tracks - sorry MGMT. I do use your name as an abbreviation for management in file names now, so you’re always in my thoughts somewhere ❤️
Björk is not a favourite artist of mine, and this album did nothing to change that opinion.
It was ok, couldn’t pick a standout song though.
Ain’t nobody needs over two hours of Outkast. And I like them! But two hours fifteen minutes is too much. Also, kids swearing, not funny.
Classic JC. One of my favourite artists and an amazing album. His singing is a not perfect and the songs are more relatable to the 1800s than the 2000s, but there’s comfort in that.
I’m not a huge Nirvana fan, they kinda passed me by. However I did quite enjoy this album. Once again, not enough to make me want to listen to more particularly.
I bought this Album, as a lot of people probably did, off the back of the success of the White Winter Hymnal. Back then the rest of the album did not deliver what I was hoping, but the passage of time has made it more palatable.
I really enjoyed this. I remember this act performing at Glastonbury and there being a big buzz around them, but had never listened. It’s very eclectic but very accessible.
Classic Pulp. Gotta love em.
I do like a bit of PG, and this was no exception. Lots of known, a good amount of unknown.
I’m not sure where to store this in my brainium. It was catchy, it was political, it was pop, it was rap. It was everything, everywhere, all at once.
It was ok. Not totally my thing but not totally not my thing.
It was ok. Can’t really remember the detail but it didn’t grate when listening
It was ok. I think I might have listened to it twice because I got confused on days and didn’t recognise it…not sure if that’s a compliment or not!
Classic Police. Nice to hear an album with some hits, but also some different sounds and a different singer than Sting (or Mr Sting). Didn’t hear him let out a little tummy squeak though.
Great voice, except I can’t unhear the chef from South Park 🙁 Also, some of the content hasn’t aged well.
It was a lil dry and depressing. I don’t think LC is for me.
Nice to hear a whole album. Loads of hits, great voice. Can’t unsee Morten Harket as Viking on Masked Singer though. Spoilers, sorry.
A classic Eminem album. Still fresh after all these years.
There are worse things I could have listened to. But there are also many, many better things.
I enjoyed! No songs I knew well but a classic sound and a new favourite (…And in Every Home).
You’ve got to admit, Taylor Swift puts together one heck of an album.
I enjoyed. I don’t think I’m ever going to be a hardcore Bowie fan but I’m ok with that.
It was kinda cool. Still fresh after 32 years.
I did not want to like this. I did not want to listen to an hour and 18 minutes of this. But I dis both. (I actually quite enjoyed, but don’t tell anyone)
This was intriguing. Had no prior knowledge of this music but somehow was surprised by the sound.
So interesting. The Divine Comedy are one of my all time top five bands and yet I did not know they had collaborated for this. Just a really interesting listen.
I don’t think this was a bad album - but I can’t really remember it. Which kinda speaks volumes.
It was pleasant enough. Definitely heard an influence on Neil Hannover in there
Not for me. I’ve never been chilled enough for this kind of music.
I quite enjoyed the sound, and there was a bit of the Kristofferson about the lyrics - but not enough to make me want more.
I was looking forward to this - I love the Beatles. Or so I thought. I think I like some Beatles. In small bursts. This was a bit much.
Um, hadn’t heard of them, didn’t know what to expect. It was varied and I can imagine being quite exciting in their time. Did not dislike.
Oh my. I mean, obvious talent but some of the lyrics - sheesh! Particularly on “If I was Your Girlfriend”. They started off laughable and then got creepy. A lot of ew. I can imagine if Prince was a budding artist now and tried his manipulation techniques on the new generation, I’d like to imagine he’d be laughed at. Sadly he would probably still succeed.
I do like a bit of Morrissey, I just try to ignore the questionable politics.
It was ok. I don’t know why I thought they were a hip hop troop but there were are.
Pleasant enough voice but not my kind of music. At the moment at least.
It’s classic Dylan, and I’m not mad at it. But I’m a fan of the hits. And his Christmas record, but that’s my own business.
It was a strange old mix but not unpleasant.
I liked how this album flowed and all felt like it was on the same theme yet all the songs sounded different enough.
I happened to listen to a podcast all about the making of this album, which was fascinating. The album itself, a little less than fascinating in and of itself. But then again, jazz is not my bag. Still glad I’ve listened to it. (The podcast was Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford, episode called “Bowie, Jazz and the Unplayable Piano” if anyone is interested.)
I don’t really know what this is or was but I wasn’t mad at it.
I didn’t mind this - it was very Kinks-esque. I enjoyed the lyrics, I enjoyed the musical arrangements. Farewell was a favourite of mine.
One for the mega fans I think. I just kept wanting to hear the hits. But still a great musician.
Didn’t know this artist before listening, can’t remember this artist after listening. Sorry buddy.
Oh, no thank you.
Enjoyable - our house will forever be associated with an advert from the 80s though
A lil bit too concept for me. I like Pink Floyd with more lyrics
Interesting - I knew some of the songs, didn’t mind the others. But wouldn’t be a go-to album for me
For some reason I was really pulled in by this album and can’t wait to listen to it again. Raw but polished, honest but kind. Such a genre spanning sound, I will even recommend this to my husband and we don’t like the same music at all.
It’s a bit Johnny Cash, a bit Kris Kristofferson, a bit Cat Stevens, a bit The Kinks - and yet not. And lots of taking clothes off.
Quite enjoyable. A bit Hundred Reasons - and other grungy rock bands of that era. But very listenable to.
Ah, the 90s. What a decade. Would rather have had Boss Drum as the Shamen album, but this was just what I needed for a post-Bank Holiday Tuesday.
It was ok. I think if you like the sound of CCR you will like most of what they do.
I don’t really know when this album should be played to get the most out of it. It didn’t speak to me other than saying “next”.
If you like Lynyrd Skynyrd then I guess you’ll like this? I enjoyed. Great track to end on too (Free Bird). Anyone else forever associate this with Forest Gump now?
Classic Byrds. Enjoyable but not a go-to album I don’t think.
I’m not a jazz girl.
Enjoyable. Some thought provoking songs, Kinder Murder especially. Classic Costello really.
What can I say that hasn’t been said already. I enjoyed.
Enjoyable. I like the voice and the general sound.
Was never a huge fan of the PSBs. I find them a bit monotonous and the way their lyrics scan jars a little. But that’s just opinion. They always remind me of my brother because he likes them, so I will always have that connection to them.
I didn’t mind this. It drew me in straight away and kept me interested to the end. What more can you ask for?
I didn’t enjoy the opener, found the first couple of songs repetitive in and of themselves. But ended up feeling a little sad the album had ended. Go figure.
It was alright. A bit samey.
Sorry, just not my bag. Can appreciate the talent but not for me.
Worth looking this artist up on Wikipedia as it gave more context. Could see where they had influenced others but the content was a little juvenile for my today tastes. (I was also never a real fan of acts like Garbage)
An obvious influence on Neil Hannon - and some questionable song topics. But o enjoyed overall.
I could appreciate this and with more listens it would probably become a favourite. But let’s face it, that probably won’t happen and I’ll continue listening to the same few albums on rotation as always.
Some great hits - and the songs played in the context of the album made a lot more sense. But listening to it outside of the 80s it did feel like it was being deliberately overtly provocative, which it probably was, but that’s not my thing and creates a defence wall in me. I got the same reaction to WAP so…
Not the motivational soundtrack I needed for this Monday morning - wish I’d listened on Saturday night when the heat was preventing satisfactory sleep and a chill out was much in need.
Well, I did NOT need the song “Kids” this morning, no not at all. But all in all a good, solid Lou Reed album.
Can tell that it is more modern Cohen - but still a lil depressing.
Full disclosure - I did not listen to the whole 3+ hours of this album. But I did enjoy what I heard.
Classic album. Took me right back to 2003 and Reading festival. Security Guard 118, I hope you’ve gotten over the trauma of having that number at the height of the BT ad campaign. Also, can thoroughly recommend a game of roast dinner baseball at 2am should you ever get the chance. Love it.
I don’t know. Not the worst, not the best, not for me. Bit too folky, but too psychedelic.
I knew a large number of the tracks which made me feel a little more cool. Enjoyable album.
More enjoyable than I was expecting but probably won’t listen again.
A little too gravelly, and perhaps because I knew about him before I knew his music, it seemed a little cliched. It was ok, but won’t be seeking more education.
I simultaneously did not know what to expect and knew exactly what to expect. And I was simultaneously right. And I was disappointed by both.
The title of this album angered me. How can more than one person be AN eagle?! Anyhoo, the music was quite good. A but Jack Johnson but with less Hawaii.
I really enjoyed this. She is more than just a Cornflake Girl to me now.
I got interrupted listening to this but was so engaged that when I went back to listen again three days later I started from the beginning. I really enjoyed this. Before I had only really known Coconut and Without You - two songs which did not go together with the same person in my mind. This album built bridges between those two and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
No. Nobody needs 1 hour 46 minutes of Jazz. NOBODY.
Sorry - I’m not a dance music kinda gal.
I reckon this is a voice you either love or hate. Can’t say I’m a fan. As a note, I don’t like marmite either.
It was ok. Not a stand out album for me.
Short and ….sort of ok. Not my kind of music.
It was ok - a bit samey, hasn’t really made an impact.
Took me back to a place I’m not sure I wanted to go but hey. It was better than I remembered it but I think the time for airy, summer-vibes, dream-like positive lyrics has passed. For now. See also Jack Johnson.
Nah mate. Not for me. Music was ok but it’s not my thing.
I actually quite enjoyed this. It got my foot tapping. I wouldn’t. Choose to put it on but I wouldn’t rush to turn it off either.
Not really for me. I might have liked it if I was a whipper snapper when it came out.
Gotta say I’m more of a greatest hits fan when it comes to this band. But if you’re a Pulp fan you’ll love it. Not sure what people who have never heard their music will think 🤔
I couldn’t remember listening to this one - the cover art was the most memorable thing about it I’m afraid
Amazing voice, amazing songs.
EC seems to appear heavily in this list so I was a bit “not him again”. But I enjoyed.
Much more country than I was expecting, which isn’t a bad thing, it was just a bit of a surprise.
I was astounded that this was a live album, not only for the clarity of his voice but for the silence of the audience, save for the applause. Amazing voice, great spin on some songs. He is like the Christopher Walken of song speech pattern wise. I do get that he’s a bit marmite though so if you don’t like his voice you’re probably not going to like this album.
Some different sounds as well as some classic on here - I enjoyed!
Was this an album of just one song?? If you like that song, great! If you don’t, gotta say it’s a little dull.
Nice to hear the Strongbow advert song in context. Glad I listened but probably won’t listen again.
Not unpleasant. Some quite enjoyable noises on this album.
I think I would have enjoyed watching this as a video. I liked the educational side but it was a little dull for just audio.
It was rather pleasant. Nice to hear a modern twist on some Irish classics. I think if you like the Wellerman but not too much you would like this.
Quite modern yet also quite 60s. Liked the first song on the album most, but probably because I knew it.
Wry similar to other Liverpudlian bands - it’s a shame the others are more well known than them. Enjoyable.
Jazz. No. Enough already.
Some different yet all to recognisable sounds. Enjoyable, if you like Mr Stewart’s voice.
It just didn’t get this. Some nice tunes, great voices. But perhaps I need to see the rock opera being performed?
This physically hurt my ears.
I enjoyed the James Bond sound, but the rest was not really my thing. Appreciate the musicality though.
For some reason I always think of this bad as a 50s group (think Buddy Holly and the Crickets) and am always surprised when they don’t have that sound. Enjoyable enough album but a bit samey.
Really dull with not a lot of substance - sorry.
Inoffensive if not a little dull.
I was expecting bigger and better things from this album. I’d heard the name but had not knowingly heard any of the music. Some of the lyrics seemed to fetishise motherhood which is an absolute turn off - so I did.
I enjoyed. A classic album with some well known hits. All very listenable but wouldn’t want to hear all of them on the radio.
If you like the human league you’ll like this. Apart from the remixes but I suppose they need to be taken in context of remixes and electronic music being fairly new on a mainstream album so they didn’t want to rock the boat too much.
I very much enjoyed this album. Lots of well known songs.
Morrissey has such an amazing turn of phrase - not twee, not obvious, but beautiful. And the music is so delicate at times. I would have said that like Vincent Van Gough his works would be appreciated more years after his death. Alas his views on politics may have put pay to that. I think he was spot on about Sinead O’Conner though.
What a voice. Beautiful. I saw there was a collaboration between her and Harry Belafonte - think I’ll have to check that out. Also nice bit of “lion sleeps tonight” action - unexpected but welcome!
I really wanted to like this but I just couldn’t find an “in”. It seemed confused and jumbled. Turns out I listened to the album on shuffle. True story.
This album was like one of my teachers described me - dull yet somehow annoying. I don’t get the hype I’m afraid, there was nothing standout about this album. Perhaps in context it would have had more input but honestly it was quite unforgettable.
This album was full of raw, dirty guitar sounds and grungy female voices. And while it wasn’t fully for me I could totally understand why this could be someone’s favourite album. Now give me the Last Living Rose and I’d be all over it.
I saw the word “jazz” in a description and my heart sank. I glimpsed the album art and was confused. I listened to the music and I was confounded. What is this? Why is this? Who is this?? I did question myself part way through when the Churchill speech was playing over some Germanic sounding language, especially since I had watched episode one of The White House Plumbers the night before. All in all am experience I am glad I have had.
I don’t think I had quite recovered from the whole U2 forcing their album onto everyone’s i-devices back in the 2010s so I was a little hesitant to listen. However I was blown away. Can absolutely see why they became so successful. Now pay your taxes, you naughty boys.
Not my kind of music. Another one of those albums which I don’t quite know in what context I need to be listening to it.
A cross between a James Bond and an American Horror Story soundtrack. Either way, not very pleasant.
I liked. I don’t fully understand Nick Cave but I’m ok with that.
Who needs Radiohead on a Monday morning, especially when returning to work after some lovely annual leave?! Not me, that’s for sure. I just don’t understand them or their music.
I felt like I needed to be at a 90s house party in the early hours to fully appreciate this album. Did not dislike.
A bit more country than I was expecting, but that’s ok. Always nice to hear Sympathy for the Devil too.
It was jolly enough. A whiff of Sweet at times. And although I know it was a different time, anyone who writes about women so badly should be ashamed. Your misogyny and ignorance is showing, you should cover it up.
Like a French William Shatner.
Having never heard of this band didn’t know what to expect. The music was ok but like Fleet Foxes, a whole album of it was maybe a bit much?
I was aware of the name but not the voice. Really disliked the opening sounds but then warmed to the actual songs.
A lil Jack Johnson, a lil White Stripes. Not unpleasant but not for me.
Great opportunity to hear the whole album. I don’t quite get the appeal or the importance of this band but I’m glad the music exists.
Short and sweet. Great guitar work.
https://music.apple.com/gb/album/love-and-devotion/1653513320 For those who use Apple Music - it’s the second half of this album. I bet this was an experience to see live. Loses a bit in translation listening while doing data validation tbh.
First day back at work after over a week off, did not need this. Not my kinda vibe. A bit boring tbh.
An eclectic mix of not unpleasant sounds. Reminiscent of Joy Division and the Cure yet remaining unique.
What can I say, I’m just a girl who loves this kind of music. A girl who doesn’t even know what to call this style of music. I Don’t know why, I know it’s not made for me, I am not the target audience. But hey, it takes all sorts. First half had me a-head bopping for sure. Second half was a bit darker but still enjoyable.
I’m sure if you love Neil Young you’ll love this. Personally I find his voice a bit too whiny which distracts me from the content.
I have to say it wasn’t as bad I was expecting. Quite listenable and honestly what I needed on a Friday morning!
It was ok. Not my favourite genre but I managed to listen with very little flinching.
It was ok - not my first choice of music but not too jarring. The voice of PJ Harvey with a White-Stripes-Esque backing track.
I thought the album, including the live tracks, was going to be a bit much but I enjoyed. Some songs haven’t aged well, and that’s why you won’t hear them on the radio.
It wasn’t what I wanted but appeared to be what I needed on this Wednesday morning. The album cover took me back to my school days…and I remember watching the video for fire starter on top of the pops and being scared by Keith. Bless him.
Unpopular opinion - better than Neil Young?
Now will fully admit I think I was expecting something more like MCR - so that was jarring from the start. And I was listening with only one headphone on (got to keep vigilant for those Amazon deliveries) so I thought perhaps the actual music was being played in the absent earphone. But nope, not the case. I found it boring and annoying with no redeeming features.
I enjoyed and was happy to leave the album on repeat. Not a go-to band for me but didn’t kick them out of my head.
I did very much enjoy this, but then I like the country sound. It was different to what I was expecting - I think how close it is to “Bryan Adams” made me think it would be more middle of the road.
Mark and Lard have a lot answer for. Blitzkrieg Pop is an absolute classic
It was different to what I was expecting. One of those bands who I had heard of but not heard. Quite rocky - a cross between RHCP, Queens of the Stone Age, Pearl Jam etc. I think. What do I know.
Slow and steady. Not my style but I’m sure their fans don’t mind.
I was taken right back to Friday nights and TFI Fridays. Have to say Wild Wood has never been a favourite single, but in context it made more sense.
I never liked Summer Breeze so the chances of me liking this were slim.
Not all that unpleasant. Some questionable and dark song themes which detracted from the music (Juanita I’m looking at you).
I wouldn’t have categorised this as rock. And would have placed it in the 60s/70s folk scene rather than the very late 80s. But what do I know.
Reeves and Mortimer have a lot to answer for, as does Dave Hill’s fringe. Nice to hear something from Slade that isn’t Christmassy - but I bet that song has paid for a lot of Christmas presents. Not unpleasant.
Beautiful voice. Would love to have heard her with a more modern sound, but this’ll do nicely.
Was this all one song? Hard to tell.
Didn’t touch the sides
I’m sorry, I just really don’t get Björk. I don’t understand it and I don’t like it. There, I said it. I feel better now.
Once again, I do love me some Morrissey. Not his politics but his music. Every Day is Like Sunday speaks to me on another level.
A little odd in places, beautiful in others, and at times problematic. I’m not sure what box to put this in.
I didn’t want to listen but I’m glad I did. What a fantastic box of frogs. Could do with a little less tin whistle and sitar, but that’s just a general rule for life.
At times wonderfully musical, at others incredibly dull. I don’t know the right space and time for this to make sense.
Not as “something” as I was expecting, but I haven’t quite worked out what that something is.
I’d forgotten how good this album, and this band, are.
I wanted to hate it and I didn’t think I was going to have to try very hard, but it won me over quite easily. Damn you, Tom.
Couldn’t listen on Apple Music - found it on Spotify but could only listen on shuffle. Didn’t bother with most of it. I think Pharrell really showed his true colours with Blurred Lines. Not cool P, not cool.
This album is the punk equivalent of mild cheddar. Lacks the punch of mature cheddar without providing an alternative. Oh, and I don’t like either.
She’s got a fabulous voice but this album doesn’t feel sincere and got quite dull quite quickly.
Not a huge fan and this album did nothing to make or break that opinion.
So much misogyny. No wonder we are where we are.
Very LA, post-grunge, surfer-style, Eels adjacent. Not my kind of music generally but was not too unpleasant.
Without the context this album is pale and uninteresting.
I was surprised and disappointed in this album. It’s from 1992 yet it could have been released today. The subject matter hasn’t changed. Could have done with a little less misogyny but hey, that’s just in general ammirite?? I think I heard a section which may have influenced Goldie Lookin’ Chain, which is always nice.
This album played and made very little impact. I suddenly realised it was back at the beginning. I think this is an example where the value is less than the sum of the parts. However, there are some obviously crowd pleasers on this album - and I include myself in that crowd.
A bit bland? Asking for a friend..
A lil bit flat for me. All Led, very little Zeppelin.
Not as electronicy as the album art suggested, but still not for me.
I disregarded Hole as a shouty grunge band, so I was very pleasantly surprised. More tuneful with meaningful lyrics. I enjoyed.
Me: oh yay, Elton John, I know a lot of his music, I’m going to enjoy this album. Reader, apparently I do not know a lot of his music. Still enjoyed the album though.
Musically sound and I’m sure there is great talent there, but the music was not to my taste.
Love the hits, the other songs not so much. It hurts my voice to listen to this.
I was taken back to being a teenager. Not that I was a teenager when this came out, but I had teenageish children at the time this came out and I didn’t get their excitement (see also Twilight), it was a bit too prog-rock for me. But listening to this now I kind of understood. Will definitely listen to more Muse now.
My brother and his friends love Wu-Tang. For context, we are white, middle class and live in rural England. My brother enjoys craft ale and cider, and his friends are both PhD doctors in Chemistry and Cyber Security respectively. Perhaps it because I don’t tick all those boxes that I don’t quite get the Clan.
This is not the Billy Bragg I used to enjoy. Far more country than I was used to but not unpleasant
Some hits. Some nots. Not a huge Bowie fan, so what do I know?
A little emotional, a little preachy.
Unexpected but not unpleasant.
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Did feel like I was in Nando’s at times because of the relentless beats.
Nice to hear the songs that influenced other songs.
I think I prefer older Dylan, but this was acceptable.
Very much enjoyed. But then I am a country girl at heart.
Fun fact - the newest Beatle’s track is released today. I like a bit of George Harrison once I’m listening to it, but never relish the thought. Soz George.
I mean. Those trousers. Christina Aguilar has an amazing voice and talent but as was the style in those days, everything was a little too engineered and contrived. I include the sound, the lyrics and the image. Not her fault though.
It was not a chore and was quite enchanting. I was expecting to hate this. From the album art to the album name and the fact it was two hours long…but two hours came and went and I was surprised. I had to google to check the lead singer wasn’t Lou Reed, and at other times felt it could be the Eels. I liked!
A little dull truth be told. I think they might be a band that is better seen live in concert.
Nope. Dull. Perhaps I’m not in the right mood.
Not huge Pumpkins fan. Not a lot more to say
I very much enjoyed this album. Although Run for Your Life is very dark and quite unsettling
I liked - just like I liked the other Hole album. Not entirely sure why there are two Hole albums on this list though?
This album was unusual but all the better for it. And so fresh - if you had told me it was released this year I would have believed you. But it’s nearly 40 years old. Wow.
I had never really heard any Jeff Neck before. I enjoyed it well enough, but not so that I would seek out more.
Nope. Sorry.
Why?
Perhaps I listened to close to another Primal Scream album. Perhaps it’s just not that good. We will never know.
My husband had this album the day before me. At first I thought it was someone cutting their grass or pressure washing their car, it was that monotonous and annoying. Suffice today did not enjoy when I had it.
Classic Bragg. Prefer this to the Mermaid Avenue album.
Sadly this album passed through my ear holes with ne’er a glance.
Thank you to the spies who noted a friend mentioned this album to me on WhatsApp the day before I was given this. Nice bit of joined up spying. As for the album itself, I enjoyed.
It’s ok if you like that sort of thing. Not a fan of the casual racism. And yes I know it was a different time but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Some classics. Some new to me. And what an album cover.
It’s ok. May have been a ground breaker but it wasn’t a ground shaker for me.
The first track took me back to my drama classes at middle school. They’d put it on for us to “relax” and I HATED it. The rest of the album was quite a revelation!
Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. No.
Very much enjoyed. I’m On Fire was introduced to me from Orange is the New Black and I’ve loved it ever since. I ignore the power imbalance undertones.
What an utterly boring album. So boring that I noticed it was boring. Some albums can be dull, but subtly dull, like you haven’t realised it’s finished dull. This one was just awfully dull.
Just a Rascal is alright, but possibly just for nostalgia reasons. The rest is very dated and Jezebel just made me angry.
I just don’t know what shelf to put this on, so it will stay in a bag and forgotten about. Then I’ll discover it again, but won’t recall the sound, give it a listen and wonder why I didn’t just throw it out. Life’s too short.
At 20 minutes I thought at least it will be quick. Not quick enough for me I’m afraid. It’s not bad, it’s just not the kind of music I enjoy.
The difference between listening on Tuesday to Wednesday was startling. Tuesdays are obviously the best day for this kind of music. Wednesday, not so much.
I had to listen to it on YouTube so that already put me off a bit. It was ok but I agree the tracks a lil too long.
I really enjoyed this album. A bit Pretenders, a bit Hole, a bit Garbage, a bit PJ Harvey. I might even recommend toy husband…
Not have as rocky and unintelligible as I remember 😁 Quite musical and acceptable to listen to in company.
Not very forward thinking or female friendly. In the song about his grandma I was rooting for the other side.
A bit meh. Not a classic.
Nope. Music should soothe, not jar. Anyone who produces music that jars is just being a knob.
Classic Bob. Nice to hear but wouldn’t seek it out usually.
I like me a bit o’ the ol’ country and bluegrass, but this was a bit too much.
It was short, and I was busy, so I ended up listening to this album a few times in a row. Apart from cinnamon girl I couldn’t tell you another song. But at least I didn’t hate it.
Love a bit of Frank, but tbh he wasn’t my favourite of the Rat Pack. A classic offering here.
Nah. I should have seen the armadillo tank as a red flag.
I listened to lost of it without even realising. Like a poor copy of Everything But The Girl.
I listened but I didn’t hear (or I heard it but I didn’t listen, I can never remember which way round it should be). Would probably listen again.
I watched the video for “connected”. So much denim, I could almost smell it. And looking at the lead singer, no wonder I had such bad taste in men in the 90s. Thank goodness that changed (adding in case husband is reading…) As for the music, tbh it was quite dull. Hadn’t reached the “repetitive but good” heights of Fat Boy Slim and the like. Might be better if I was off my tits on Two Dogs or Hooch while listening.
All I can think of is the rhyming Becktionary from Futurama.
It was ok I guess. Not sure how they stand out from any other indie band of the time.
A bit different to the Byrds I was expecting, not as folky and happy.
A different album to the Beach Boys I thought I knew. I really liked it. Disney Girls is a particular favourite - made me nostalgic for a childhood I never had.
I love a bit of Willie Nelson. Such a talent. This was a bit more traditional country (cowboys and such).
I’ve never been a huge fan of MSP. Perhaps be she they come across as a bit too worthy in their lyrics and I just can’t get past that. Still, they haven’t needed me or my patronage to be a success so I’m sure they’re not bothered by that opinion.
Some light hearted tunes, and some dark subject matter. Great voices but not what I would seek out
I thought I didn’t like Suede, but perhaps now I do?
Love love love. American Girl will always be Silence of the Lambs to me.
I listened to this before Christmas 2023 and it is now January 4th 2024 and I can still remember this album. That speaks volumes for me. A couple of songs have made it to a favourites playlist so another big tick (Keep the Car Running and Intervention if you’re interested).
The song titles read like my child’s class register….ethereal but a bit samey.
I just don’t like Stevie Wonder’s music. Not sure if it’s the harmonica, the jazz undertones, the voice, the electric organ, the “on hold music” vibes, the constant minor chords or all of the above.
Not for me. Maybe more of a visual artist but listening to someone show off on the guitar when I know not if the performance is good is not my idea of good listening.
Narp. Just not a T-Rex fan. If you like his voice I’m sure you’ll like this album but it’s a bit too whiny for me.
It was ok - but wouldn’t seek it out again.
I liked the hits, didn’t mind the fillers. But I can understand this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea
Some tie-tappin’ tunes with a string feminist theme - if only we had listened then.
Better than the previous captain Beefheart but I still can’t forgive them for that one.
Pleasant enough to listen to but a bit too ethereal for me.
Nope. The worst kind of “jazz”. I don’t even consider this music. If I could give 0 stars I would. Some people abuse the privilege of being able to release music.
Not much to write home about tbh. A very 90s voice, quite bland.
I was quite excited to listen to this album as I really liked Ms Dynamite-ee-ee, but the rest of the album didn’t make a dent.
It’s a narp from me. Too out there. Like jazz, the only people the musicians are entertaining is themselves.
It’s ok. Bad Moon Rising is a classic, the others are a bit samey.
Big thumbs up for The Shining, but the rest is rather dull.
Didn’t know what to expect, was somewhat pleasantly surprised, but not my kind of music overall.
I’m sorry, but listening to the vocalist, Nadja from What We Do In the Shadows came to mind, and then I couldn’t get that out. I remember the release of Glory Box and their performance on TOTP was a massive thing (because they were from the sameish county as it from), but honestly I didn’t and still don’t get the hype. Trip-Hop? Dance act? I don’t even know what it is but I know it’s up its own arse.
I may have been overloaded with Running Up That Hill in recent times - it’s been less than 24 hours since I listened and I couldn’t tell you anything about its contents, spare from the cover art looking like Liza Minelli
I think I would prefer a greatest hits.
Not a huge fan.
This was not what I needed, wanted, or ultimately accepted in my ears.
Nah. They are called a “supergroup” on Wikipedia but it’s just rehashed Arctic Monkeys.
Somehow this didn’t have the charm of Iron Maiden or AC/DC. Sorry chaps.
I actually really enjoyed this and I don’t think he needed Kanye West at all.
I think he was very lucky to have had a song chosen for the Toy Story film. I think his voice and style is so distinctive as to render it dull. Also special mention to least sexy version of “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. No, just no.
This album didn’t get much of a foothold in my musical mountain. It was quite whiney and I kept wanting to hear the “good one” But it never came.
A bit dull and samey. Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick?
It was ok I suppose. Didn’t have the charm of some of its contemporaries but I’m sure a lot of disaffected teenage boys would have lapped this up.
Not unpleasant but a bit jarring at times. I know I won’t seek them out again.
Yes. Very enjoyable. Not sure why this has the X factor but it does.
Not what I thought Dinosaur Jr would sound like. That’s not a bad thing, but also not a good thing, it’s just a thing.
Oh gosh no. Just no.
Again, no. Not for me thank you.
A lot of noise and navel-gazing
Some recognisable bits but overall not my kinda thing.
Average. I thought I was going to enjoy this because of hearing them in the radio 1 live lounge but nope. Shame.
I always forget what genre Judas Priest are and am surprised when it is rock. Not unpleasant but not the music for my soul.
Sorry, I feel so uncultured but it’s just not for me. Musically great, just my opinion.
Didn’t scratch the surface I’m afraid.
If you like Gershwin you’ll like this. I don’t mind Gershwin but over 2 hours was a bit much for me.
I’m not the demographic. I enjoy the rhythm and the rhyme but the content is not on my radar.
I was expecting wonderful things but alas that tree did not come to bear fruit.
Cheap album artwork; tacky, childish name. If I didn’t know better I would have said this was a joke act.
It had the X factor that makes it stand out above other, less know artists. But not as good as other albums of its ilk.
First time listening to a Belle & Sebastian album. They always seemed a bit aloof - no reason to think that! Enjoyable but hasn’t made me a fan.
I was really enjoying this album, then I had a break to do the school run and when I came back it no longer hit the same. Paper Planes is amazing though. And absolute respect to M.I.A., she’s definitely a role model.
I just couldn’t get the film High Fidelity out of my head. And this has not entered my all time top five albums from that film I’m afraid.
It was ok I suppose. May have felt different at the time?
Nope.
I listened to this but didn’t hear it, which it least means it didn’t annoy me.
I noped out of this one. I don’t like jazz on a good day, and today was not a good day.
Pleasantly surprised! I think you’ll know from the first song whether this is your thing or not.
Was this album just one long song?? It was a bit too one strum rhythm heavy, and that got Birmingham quite quickly.
Three days since I listened and I can’t really remember it.
Not a huge fan of Neil Young so not a huge fan of this.
Their name and their music does not correlate.
Classic Weller. Why does “You’re the best thing” sound like a cover?? I can’t be alone in this.
At first I thought it was too much effort to listen on YouTube. But I’m glad I persevered. I agree with the Beatles comments, but I think that adds to its charm. “I’d Like That” and “Your Dictionary” were particular highlights for me.
Filth. FILTH. Absolute filth. Can’t get over the filth enough to enjoy the music. Stop normalising calling your partner Daddy, it’s weird.
The album felt really short - or I fell asleep. No classic like Paper Planes on there, but listenable.
Short but sweet. Audiences in them days were rowdy.
Better than I expected. Shame the album isn’t available on Apple Music. I had a little sad about how easy it seemed to be to create music in those days. Too many cooks now.
I do like a bit of Frank, but a little too jazzy for me, this album.
Love love love.
Too long and too dull
Better than I thought it was going to be but not totally my kind of music.
Unmemorable
Unremarkable I’m afraid
Good, solid album from MJ.
This is like the Everyman album of the 60s. Each song is familiar and gets you asking “is this the band that sang the original song in that film I know this song from? 🤔 “
I was going to say “unpopular opinion” but reading the reviews it looks like it is the consensus. This album is boring - I agree with the comment about the orchestrations sounding like old Disney movies. I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt and say that these songs do nothing for her voice. They are all in one range, and I feel you could swap the backing music from each track and no one would notice.
Nah mate. Not for me.
I don’t know what it is about EBTG but I just can’t warm to them. Partly it’s the music - it’s just not my thing (doesn’t mean it’s not good) and partly Tracy Thorn’s voice which again is not my thing (and again doesn’t mean it’s not good). Having said that, check out their version of The Only Living Boy In New York - stunning.
Not as much of a bop as I remembered ATCQ being.
Oh my gosh what a pile of twaddle. There is no doubt that this man had talents, two major ones being that he can convince people to buy his music and also convince women to be his play things, but the musical talent is so misdirected in this album. I wish I could unhear. Also wish I could unsee the video with Kim K - on a bike, facing the wrong way but the wind is blowing her hair out of her face? That what a step too far in expecting me to suspend my disbelief.
A bit dull. None of the vitriol or passion of the KLF I knew.
I immediately disliked the title of this album, but the majority of the music was pleasantly surprising. I could probably listen to this again, but most likely won’t.
I liked that the vocals are not a clone of Beyonce. I liked the message on the whole. But not an album I would listen to again.
Ok, so at first I thought my headphones had broken because I couldn’t hear anything. Apparently that was just the introduction. Then I read a review which said to not listen to the first track first, so I switched. I also read the review that said they liked the bit when they sang. I thought this was a joke but no, there is a singing bit. Overall I have to say it’s a no from me but that’s because I just don’t like jazz.
I thought I was going to hate this but I actually kinda enjoyed it. People did age quicker in those days so it does sound like 30 year olds playing teenagers (Grease - I’m looking at you) but quite endearing.
Surprisingly fresh and fun. From the picture I guessed Irish but are in fact Australian. Would listen again.
A provocative cover which promises so much yet the music delivers so little.
This took me back. I was in the kitchen of the farmhouse I was the housekeeper for listening on their B&O system. I think this album has aged well.
Nope. Noise.
It was ok. I always think Dinosaur Jr is a different genre so am taken aback on first listen.
Nice to hear the older stuff. Love the history of this band too.
I think I like this type of music, but when it’s done by Johnny Cash et al. From Mr Jones it just sounded moany.
The Carpenters make me question everything about music. I can’t think of a scenario where putting this album on would be appropriate. But then when I think of most other albums I can’t think of it either. They are obviously loved and talented, but gotta say a lil bit dull.
Gave me Kaiser Chiefs vibes. Must more westernised than I was expecting, but I didn’t like the combo.
Some great songs, and a great talent, but none of the hits of Back to Black.
Gave me The Darkness vibes. And a little AC/DC perhaps? Not for me though.
Not for me. A bit too folky and smells of the 70s
I prefer the Black album. Wasn’t as much personality on this offering I felt.
I preferred the album which came after this but it was an easy listen.
I’m not sure if I listened to the right album, but reading the comments I think I listened to one which covered enough bases. I enjoyed the bosssnova and the rhythm of the words but wouldn’t actively listen again.
The hits are good, the rest are a lil samey
I know I’ve heard at least one of these songs before but cannot place it. I quite enjoyed it. I thought the style was going to get annoying as it is very voice-centric but it didn’t seem to.
This was the first Morrissey album I purchased myself, the others that were available to me were my brothers’. At the time I was disappointed. There didn’t appear to be any songs with the charm of the older ones. And tbh I always found Morrissey and the Smiths a hard listen because of the jazz type phrasing of his lyrics. I could cope with this if I knew the song really well, but obviously didn’t know these songs well. This has subsided with time and hearing this album with fresh ears I really rather enjoyed it.
I felt a bit silly that I didn’t know that Nick Cave was in a band before he started with the Bad Seeds. It makes perfect sense though. Not my kind of music though.
I am conflicted with Madonna. On the one hand I think she has pushed boundaries and refuses to be a quiet woman, for which she should be applauded. On the other hand, I find her a bit embarrassing. She seems a bit like one of those girls from school who keeps posting about how they can still fit in their cheerleading outfit. Her emphasis on her looks contradicts the female positive message she sends. Then there’s the music. Meaningful lyrics? Never heard of her! (Although her early work was much more intelligible). I wish Madonna would stop trying to be something and just be Madonna.
Nearly skipped a song because it was just noise. But kept going and found the rest listenable.
A great big nope from me. I agree with others - Nico cannot sing, or at least she isn’t singing to the same tune as everyone else. I don’t understand anyone who likes this. Her style is the embodiment of a weak, vulnerable female who can barely open their eyes let alone say no. Awful.
Not bad. Not the best thing I have ever heard but by no means the worst. Eminently listenable to
Didn’t have the beautiful bounce of other French albums.
Short and sweet! Quite enjoyable. Not sure why I’ve never heard of them.
Love love love Dolly
I was looking forward to this but it was short lived. So many noises.
I don’t think I was in the mood for this one, but I don’t know what the right mood would be.
I listened to it but I can’t remember much. Which means it at least wasn’t too bad, just not my thing.
9 hours. 9. Hours. No Nathanial, Oh no Nathanial, there must be more to life than listening to 9 consecutive hours of Thin Lizzy. Obviously I didn’t listen to it all, and to be fair, what I did listen to I enjoyed.
Some salty language but I really enjoyed it.
I really wanted to like this but even for me it was too overly engineered.
Some more salty language and a bit of confusion.
My daughter went to nursery school with Huey’s child. I didn’t know this until we were both waiting to pick up our respective offspring. I saw him and thought 🤨 “that face looks familiar, do I know them?” 🧐 “looking again, I don’t think I know them” 🤔 “they look a bit like Huey Morgan from FLC” 😳 “puts two and two together with the last name of their child” 😱 “it IS Huey from FLC!” 🫣 “oh no, my face has actually conveyed all these emotions” 🫠 “I’m dying inside” Reservoir Dogs was my favourite film for a while so I loved Scooby Snacks, and we used to put this on the pub jukebox when skiving from school. Good times.
Rufus Wainright again?? I don’t understand. It was alright but surely we could have some variety
I knew some of them and didn’t mind most of them.
Gotta love a band who have a link to their official MySpace on Wikipedia. I didn’t like a couple of the song titles, and the music isn’t my thing, but it wasn’t too bad. Bit Jane’s Addictiony?
I blinked and missed this one. I think it was one long introduction.
Prog rock on a good day is still an affront to my ears. And today is not a good day.
It was nice to listen to a whole album. Lovely voices, I can see why they have so many fans.
I listened. They sounded vaguely familiar. Did not dislike.
Didn’t mind it. Didn’t love it.
I really rather enjoyed this one. Much more musical than I remember. Iron Man is haunting. Bet they were great live.
I think in small doses in the right environment this would be fab, but I had neither of these luxuries.
Tuesday morning post bank holiday weekend I was not feeling the funk.
I agree with the person who said that this artist lacked the ambition to make songs their own and that the likes of Johnny Cash made other people’s songs sing with his soul. This was just a little too flat to get my toe tapping even.
This music is just not for me. Perhaps if I was off my tater-tots on hallucinogenics I might appreciate more. Alas, it is a chilly Tuesday morning and I have spreadsheets to attend to.
Are kings of Leon good enough to have two albums in this list? Not sure
They get extra points for being so explicit with the album name, making it so very clear which is the band and which is the album title. And I really enjoyed the music. Not sure I believe the sentiment at all times but very nice to listen to.
Like many of my early relationships, this album was childish and messy. At least I can look back on those relationships with some semblance of joy; this album I would rather forget.
I liked it. Apple Music had a great long spiel about how they were just ahead of their time and that’s why no one liked it. But we are now ahead of that time so I did like it.
Listened on YouTube and had one advert so I count that as a win. This album was like a dream I was trying to remember but every time I tried to grasp onto memory it dissipated in my hands. Who did it remind me of? Everyone and no one. Will intend to listen to other albums but I’m not making any promises.
“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” I think is the motto of this type of music. Each track is short and very similar to the previous 10 tracks. I like a bit of variety.
A classic. Not as full of bangers as Rumours but still hauntingly beautiful.
A surprising gem, even if it was meant as a joke. Made Bjork make sense. Might give her a listen with new ears now.
Enjoyable. I can imagine there are people out there who don’t like his voice (my mum doesn’t like Adele’s voice, go figure) but I do like it. And there’s enough variety to make you keep listening but not so much that it’s like a different band sang each song.
A bit meh for me
Awesome. Such power, such pain.
Listened while in a traffic jam. It didn’t improve the situation.
It was….ok? I think you had to be there
Why? When should this album be listened to? It makes no sense and sparks no joy.
I have to say I sighed when I got another Kings of Leon album. But boy was I wrong. I loved it, and I loved the music the infinity playlist offered up afterwards.
I don’t know if I quite understand The Who, but perhaps that’s the point?
Not a fan of Coldplay. Insipid is the word that comes to mind. Sorry Coldplay, I know you’ve worked really hard. It’s not you, it’s me, yadda yadda yadda
Maybe if I’d heard this artist first I may have thought Sheryl Crow was a copycat. Or maybe not. Sheryl has more interesting song subjects in my mind.
Would it be fair to say not their best?
This music is definitely not for me. My husband would love it. Probably one of the many reasons he is leaving me.
There are two stand out songs - we all know which ones they are. Otherwise it’s a lil dull tbh.
Some people have too much time on their hands.
I didn’t mind this album but there’s just something about Tracy’s voice that I don’t gel with. I really want to like them if that’s any consolation? Possibly it’s the dance stuff that put me off.
Not a huge fan of the disco scene. Repetition starts to grate after a while. I think the individual songs might be ok at a wedding but a whole album felt a bit wrong.
Classic T Rex. If you like it you like it, if you don’t….
Classic Elvis. He was good wasn’t he. Although questionable morals.
I listened on shuffle and loop so I’m unsure if I actually listened to the whole album or whether I listened to it multiple times. I will never know.
Never really got Sparks. This Town…jarred but on today’s listen it hit different. Loved this album.
At least the album wasn’t mostly a screaming audience.
What an emotional album. Feel for the guy.
Nice, if you like that sort of thing. Had never heard of them before.
Not for me. It’s not bad, well produced, just not my kinda thang
I love me a bit of country, but even this was a bit much for me. Does he want to be married or not??
Great album. So much emotion. But if you don’t like her voice then you won’t like it.
It’s been two days since I listened and I can barely remember it. Soz.
Hasn’t got the white girl charm offensive that other music of this ilk has. Perhaps Wednesday morning doing spreadsheets is not the intended listening environment.
Not as impactful as other Roxy Music albums in first listen.
I find Iggy Pop a hard listen on his own, and a band didn’t improve my experience.
Not gonna lie, I always thought these were an emo band from the 2000s. Don’t really get the appeal.
I never really got the shouty pink scene, and this album is no exception.
I had this album on repeat when it first came out. Not quite sure why. It’s a good album in that it’s not too polished; you hear what they would sound like live without having to leave your house.
It was ok. Nothing ground breaking for me but didn’t offend.
Was I aware of this band previously? I’m not sure. It was not unpleasant but not sure it had the charm of the Travelling Wilburys.
Sorry, not for me.
A lovely little album. Obviously a couple of the classic hits are there, not sure it would be as good without those.
Oh no no no. Too much, Tom, too much.
Short but sweet. I liked the raw yet polished sound.
I could imagine putting this on during a dinner party. Not that I have dinner parties, but it’s interesting enough to fill the awkward silences while not so interesting to distract from the dazzling centre piece dessert I bring out. Quite enjoyable.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album by an artist that I didn’t think I had heard of. Could really hear the influence they had on The Divine Comedy - from the cover of Party Fears Two, to the burp at the beginning of a song. Bravo.
I feel a bit stupid, but I never realised UB40 was so political. It seems obvious now. I enjoyed the songs with lyrics but the instrumentals were a bit dull.
Classic Costello. Great if you like that sort of thing.
Short but sweet.
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Quite accessible.
None of the big hitters, but there are glimpses of genius, and at times his singing is classically beautiful.
I don’t think they needed Young if I’m honest. This was rather enjoyable and less whiny.
Rather enjoyable. Reminiscent of the Ting Tings but slightly more friendly.
Rather accessible for this white, Middle Aged woman. I think I listened to it three times as I have repeat on and it didn’t annoy me enough to watch it off. Also, love it when rappers sing about their mums.
I didn’t expect a country album but I wasn’t mad at it.
I really enjoyed this album until I had to stop listening to do something else, when I came back to it, it hit different in a bad way. Might give it another chance another time.
An interesting sound and some questionable song titles, but not hideous. A band I would like to know more about.
Classic JD sound, but no real bangers to hook me in. Needs to be listened to by a teenager who has to save to buy it on vinyl and then only has that album to listen to while they save up for another album.
Not as brash as I was expecting. Quite classy in places.
Started off quite 90s (think Gigolo Aunts - Where I Find My Heaven) but then went off a bit. Not bad.
Every song is the same vibe, which is great if you vibe with that vibe, not so great if you don’t.
I wish he had stopped.
Not today, and probably not tomorrow either.
Nondescript, can’t remember it other than it didn’t annoy me too much.
Move to hear a whole album. What a voice.
Smooth, yet raw. Very much enjoyed.
Have to say I was pleasantly surprised by some of the tracks. Not all shouty and loud like I was expecting, although there was some of that.
I’d like to say a mixed bag, but you pretty much know what you’re getting with an Aerosmith album.
Part Scott Walker, part Neil Diamond, part Johnny Cash for the story telling. Not sure who the audience should be but glad I was in it once.
The way Rod Stewart pronounced Tennessee bothered me, but other than that it was a solid album.
Better than expected. Not a huge fan of Coldplay but wasn’t disgusted by it.
Not what I expected. Less African beats, more RUN-DMC x Beastie Boys.
I did sigh at the thought of listening to a Radiohead album, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Some classic, recognisable tunes that I rather enjoyed. Others that I didn’t. I think I probably dislike Radiohead fans more than I dislike Radiohead music. I do see the band as the Coldplay of the 90s.
Not what I expected from the album art work although that probably says more about me than them. A bit Door-sy.
A polished album with some classics. Not quite Sade level of dinner party music but not far off.
I briefly had a fling with someone purporting to be PJ Harvey’s cousin. He was a d**k. He refused to help me down some stairs with a pushchair because he didn’t want anyone thinking he was the father. Hope he steps on some Lego every day. Anyway - the album was good even if the family was crap.
Another 80s rock band who I thought would be incomprehensible but were actually very articulate. Love the insult “talking to you is like clapping with one hand”.
I spoke too soon about 80s rock being more coherent than I remember. This was awful.
I’m not sure why this is here…
Such a sad angry album. I want to give them all a hug.
A little bit Bob Dylan, a little bit Dire Straits, a little bit surprisingly not for me.
I think I wasn’t in the right mood to listen to this so it didn’t land like a superhero.
Who? Why? What were the other 12 confessions?
Is this album timeless, or do I just listen to 80s radio so that is my reference point? Still good.
Classic.
More covers than I was expecting. But she has earned her stripes, she can do now wrong.
Not unenjoyable - but I think I was used to the more dancey radio version of Brimful of Asha. I just wanted them to step on the gas a bit.
I was not prepared for Fairytale of New York in August. It was all a bit much - I can imagine going to a gig and enjoying the vibe, but not putting it on at home.
Too much yet too little. No.
STOP IT. Just stop.
Jazz. No.
Not as hard rock as I thought. Some bangers on there but not my thing overall.
A bit too proud of itself
A pleasant voice and a lovely country twangy guitar. But somehow misses the charm of Dolly or the rawness of the Indigo Girls. But I might be missing something.
Like the review on Apple Music says, it takes itself too seriously and doesn’t like anyone. I think the myth is better than the reality.
Some good, classic Prince here. A bit of blue language from the purple Prince.
Nobody needs that much soprano sax
Oh gosh no. Soz.
Hideous.
Narp. Not for me. I bet they’re lovely and gentle in real life but in song they are a bit dramatic.
A bit too samey which is great if you like it.
What even is this?
Not quite as angry and raw as the previous album I listened too but not my thing.
Lovely voices, some sad songs. I enjoyed!
A bit sad but not too bad. An album for a certain mood.
Didn’t set my world on fire.
I don’t understand Genesis. And I’m ok with that.
A classic. I enjoy the music but not a huge fan of the band.
They did me dirty making me listen to this album.
Nobody needs this much AATA
Gorgeous, just gorgeous.
Nah thanks.
A bit of a mixed bag. Not entirely unpleasant.
Sounded very fresh, was surprised it was 44 years old.
Not quite the bite of Missy Elliot, but love a strong woman.
Dull dull dull. Sorry, just not my kinda thang
I don’t like jazz.
I never rode the Bristol Wave. And I’m ok with that.
A lot of funk but not much substance
One drum track to rule all.
A lil dull I have to admit. Give me the Tron soundtrack any day.
I don’t get it. I’m sorry.
Same old same old, which is great if you like Adele, which I do so yay for me.
Sounds quite timeless, like it could have been released today. Album cover is giving rap, but the music is definitely shouty metal.
All a bit saccharin. And is that what we found attractive in those days?
A lotta love lyrics, some a lil questionable. But Cry To Me is amazing.
Does what it says on the tin
Not my thing. It was like being on hold for an hour.
I love it when you get to join the dots between music - Rock of Ages must be a fave of the Offspring. Much more musical than I was expecting.
We used to put Bat Out of Hell on the jukebox to get our money worth. Good times.
A little too wispy for me. Like Florence and the Machine without the backbone
Doesn’t have the punch of the early albums. Was a little full of I’m fully honest.
I have a soft spot for Mr Blue Sky, so it was already on a winner. A little too over produced for my liking but can’t deny the talent
I had never heard of this band. They are a little bit Small Faces, a bit Cream, very 60s.
A lil too jazzy for me
It did not intrude on my work.
Not entirely sure why I needed to hear this.
Radiohead just doesn’t do it for me
I don’t think I would have been a punk.
Can’t hear Beta Band without thinking of High Fidelity. Not bad - not sure if I would have been one of those to buy the album if I was in that store.
I don’t know when this album would be played
Never been a huge fan, and this album hasn't changed that.
Not bad. Sounded quite modern. My 9 year old daughter asked who it was so it engaged her as well.
Took me back to the noughties. Strong singles but not as strong on the album tracks.
Jazz and samba. Not a choice I would make willingly.
This was like all country singers rolled into one act.
A solid 80s album. Pretty In Pink will always slap.
It was ok I guess
Might be good live?
Oh heck no
Like being transported through time. But still sounds fresh. And definitely has an X factor. I liked the story telling lyrics.
I just want to give her a hug after listening to this album. “Champagne problems” was definitely coined by an ex or their family. You might not like her music but you’ve gotta give her credit for what she’s achieved.
Can see why he was so popular
Standard Kinks. Nothing stood out tbh
I listened to this a number of times. Not sure why but it must have hit something inside me.
Dull as dishwater I’m afraid.
I was pleasantly surprised. The Band Played Waltzing Matilda was heartbreakingly beautiful.
Dull and yet annoying.
Not as bad I had made it out to be in my head.
I’m sorry, I just don’t like Stevie Wonder songs.
Lovely little Beatles album snuck in there. As with most Beatles albums there are some fillers as well as some killers.
Jethro Tull is just for Christmas not for any other time.
Started with a surprise cover, ended with disappointment.
Perhaps a Tuesday morning early admin session was not the forum for this album, but it didn’t slap.
Nope.
I love me some country music, but this was a bit same old same old.
Quit with the jazz. Enough!
I was never a huge fan. A bit like ever other band of this genre. Not quite sure why they stood out more than others.
Too tame for punk, too punk for mainstream
I knew a couple of the songs so I felt cool for a while. Then they got a bit samey.
Classic ABBA. Some questionable morals but different times etc.
The Divine Comedy are one of my all time top five acts so I loved this album. It was released at a time when love was an all consuming desire, and the comic turns of phrase made me feel like I was in on a joke. No one can make me dislike this album.
Listened but didn’t hear.
Didn’t have the impact of Dummy. A lil bland for my ears
I think this is what I needed on a Monday morning, but not sure I would need it again.
It was ok I suppose. Didn’t offend the ears too much, but didn’t connect with the brainium.
I was watching Nevermind the Buzzcocks last night. The adverts before it starts are as follows. Oura ring Polestar 3 Disneyland Paris John Lewis Michael Lors fragrance Singleton whiskey Nuromol The Buzzcocks would be turning in their graves if they were dead. This album was ok.
Did not expect to know this artist but did. But a huge fan of the fake multiple vocals style. Wonder why they would sound like live.
Ok I suppose. Wouldn’t rush to listen again.
I was never a huge fan of Oasis, I was a Blur girl, and even then only The Great Escape. There are a couple of gems (Champagne Supernova) but am I only hearing it through rose tinted glasses? Who knows.
Nice to hear an album rather than just the hits. Can’t deny he has a great voice, and the album artwork is a classic.
Oh gosh no. I don’t get albums like this. They should be seen live.
Not awful.
A little bit dull.
I was too old to like Britney. I wonder if I would have liked her if I was younger. Feel very sorry for the whole situation. Very overproduced and don’t think it shows her true talents.
Not sure what or who this is. A bit country, a bit not.
I don’t get it
I don’t know. Didn’t hate, didn’t like
Oh gosh no. I don’t like soundtracks at the best of times, but when there’s not even a film to accompany it? Hard pass.
This album holds a special place in my heart because my dad and brother used to listen to it and I still have their copy on CD. I never liked it that much, but ok re-listening I think I can see what the appeal is. To a point.
A classic but not one I would return to.
Did not know John Cale was Welsh. Now I do.
A bit too much family.
It was ok
Not entirely sure what this is or why it is under the electronic category.
Classic 80s album. I knew the hits but that’s all.
Nah mate. Too jazzy.
I had no connection to or with this music
Classic kinks. Like em if you like em
I thought I was going to love this album but I found it a bit dull.
I’m sorry, what?
I think I had preconceived ideas about the talent of Patti Smith as all I knew was the name. But I’m not sure. I quite enjoyed
I think this is the album that defines my teenage years the most. It was the first time I had heard a song (something for the weekend) that had made me want to hear more from that artist. I had the album artwork poster on my wall (the only other poster I had was the Reservoir Dogs one). I got sunglasses that looked just like the ones Neil wears. I like my music quirky and dramatic, and this fits the bill perfectly.
Sounds like an album I should like if I want to be taken seriously as a music fan.
Not as bad as I was expecting. Quite accessible.
Got confused with the year it said it was from then realised it was a reissue 🤦🏻♀️ Enjoyable enough.
No thank you. I think I prefer the polished sound of a studio album.
Some lovely classic U2. Was never a huge fan, might have been different if I was older.
What a talent. Great album.
If you like Kraftwerk you’ll like this I guess?
