We mortals can never understand the genius that is this album 5/5

Scritti Politti

There are some interesting parts, but overall, not really my thing

Sister Sledge
3/5
I guess it's okay, Nile Rodger's guitar playing is really evident throughout
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Well it's Stevie Wonder so of course its very good 4/5
Nas
3/5
Not really a fan of hip hop, but I found this album pretty interesting. I liked the kalimba in the song One Love, because that's not something you hear often. I think I enjoyed the second half a bit more than the first half.
Fela Kuti
5/5
I listened to the extended version with 4 tracks on it. When I first saw it was just 4 long tracks, I was already excited because I really like these kinds of long jammy songs because you get to really appreciate the musicianship of all those that play on it. Overall enjoyed this one very much.
Kate Bush
4/5
I was initially excited for the second side as it was more conceptual and proggy, but while listening to it, it didn't quite captivate me as I thought it would, but that said I do still like the second side more than the first. I really liked the instrumentation, especially on the second side with the Irish folk instruments.
Common
4/5
Not normally a fan of rap music, but I thought this one was pretty good. 4/5
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
I thought I was gonna like this one as this is usually the kind of music I like, but surprisingly didn't quite hook me on. Maybe it's better with the movie. 3/5
Dire Straits
4/5
It's pretty good, I really like Mark Knopfler's guitar playing.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
The first song was really good, but the rest was kinda meh
Nirvana
5/5
Definitely one of Nirvana's best performances ever. 5/5
Missy Elliott
1/5
Not really a fan of hip hop, but I tried to have an open mind for this album because the last 2 hip hop albums I got were surprised me a lot, and I quite enjoyed those 2 albums. But this one just doesn't do it for me. Also I think she says her name too much.
Röyksopp
5/5
I really enjoyed this one, it's very chill and just generally very pleasant to listen to.
Brian Wilson
5/5
I have always admired the Beach Boy's complex harmonies. Having seen the movie Love and Mercy, and knowing the story behind this album, I am very glad that Brian Wilson got this opportunity to finally complete this album. But of course this album only leaves us to wonder what the original could've been like.
Fats Domino
3/5
His voice is really good
Judas Priest
4/5
Can definitely hear some AC/DC influence on some of these songs, and also hear how this influence future metal albums.
Public Enemy
3/5
I feel indifferent to this one, it's not that bad, but its also not what I would normally listen to.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
When I was a kid, my grandfather would play a lot of CCR in the car when he drove me to and from school. So this brings back a lot of good memories. So I don't necessarily feel like I can objectively judge this album as nostalgia would put this instantly at a 5, even though this is definitely not an album I would ever see myself wanting to listen to during my day to day activities. But those good memories are too hard put aside just for a review, so 5.
Adam & The Ants
3/5
I feel like the album was full of very interesting musical ideas, but the end product wasn't quite as exciting as I hoped.
The Pharcyde
3/5
They sound like they had a lot of fun making this album, but not really my kind of music
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
4/5
I really liked listening to this, it was really nice and pretty.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
I had heard the name lcd soundsystem before, but never any of their music. I thought the songs were pretty good, but some were a bit repetitive.
Randy Newman
4/5
I'm not sure if it's his style/instrumentation in combination with his voice, or just because I saw Toy Story a million times as a child, but this album gave me some nostalgic vibes.
R.E.M.
4/5
Had a pretty tough day regarding a tragedy in my family, so I feel like this album came at just the right time.
Miles Davis
5/5
I really like the idea behind the album, not writing anything, and just asking the band to improvise base on a given set of scales
The Doors
4/5
I really enjoyed quite a lot of the tracks
The Pogues
2/5
Not really my kind of music, I do generally like celtic music, especially those with uilleann pipes, but this is just not it for me.
Sisters Of Mercy
3/5
The moment you hear that snare drum, you know this was made in the 80s. I can never understand why everyone in the 80s suddenly decided to make their snare drums sound like this, its like being repeatedly punched in the face. Although with that said, I think the songs weren't too bad.
Neil Young
3/5
It's fine, not too bad, not really my kind of music though.
Rush
5/5
This is an easy 5/5, YYZ is so good, and its one of my favourite songs to play on guitar
Beatles
5/5
This is the album that inspired the Beach Boys to make Pet Sounds, which is one of my favourite albums, so this already gets a high score for that. But beyond that, the songs on this album are so good, which justifies the high score.
Fleet Foxes
4/5
I really enjoyed listening to this album, the songs were very nice and chill
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Led Zeppelin has got be one of the greatest bands of all time, you put 4 extremely talented and proficient musicians together, and the result is some of the greatest music every written.
Hole
4/5
It's not bad, I really liked a lot of the guitar parts in these songs.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Didn't expect to get another Led Zeppelin album so soon after my first one on this list, and once again this album is absolutely fantastic. It is such a good showcase of the 4 members' skills and abilities.
David Bowie
4/5
Although I really liked the ambient music of the second half, I just feel like they don't really fit together with the more rock/pop songs of the first half, and I think it might have been better as 2 separate releases.
Ali Farka Touré
4/5
A very interesting album by a man with a very interesting back story.
CHVRCHES
3/5
I was quite intrigued from the art, and I did quite like the first couple of songs, but then the subsequent songs all kinda sounded the same.
Stan Getz
4/5
Jazz always gets a high grade in my book
The Teardrop Explodes
2/5
All the songs sound the same
Sufjan Stevens
5/5
Wow I liked this much more than I expected. I've always been a sucker for concept albums, but even without the concept, the music itself is amazing.
Little Richard
3/5
I understand this album is the precursor to much of rock music, with tutti fruitti being especially important in that regard, but most of the songs on here sound the same. I really want to give it a high grade for its importance, but I don't feel this album is captivating enough to justify that.
George Harrison
5/5
I do agree that perhaps the album was a bit too long, and there was some songs in here that felt like filler songs, but I really enjoyed the album as a whole.
Pink Floyd
5/5
This is an easy 5/5, so much emotion going through all of these songs, you can clearly hear how much they miss Syd Barrett, and it's overall such a fantastic album.
The Doors
4/5
Pretty pleasant to listen to
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
He's a really good rapper, but unfortunately rap just isn't really my thing
T. Rex
4/5
I liked quite a lot of the songs, although I feel like some of the songs are too slow. The drummer quite audibly speeds up in quite a few of them and I feel like he's finding it hard to play so slow
Goldfrapp
4/5
I liked it, but I do feel like some of the songs sound too similar
King Crimson
4/5
I have been wanting to listen to this album for a while now, so glad to finally have the chance. I really liked most of it, the only bit I didn't like was the free form jazz part of Moonchild. It felt a little needless and just kinda there not doing much. So unfortunately, although I liked everything else, the majority of Moonchild drops this down to a 4/5
Joy Division
2/5
Honestly I found the songs kinda boring, and they just didn't really captivate me in any way.
Throbbing Gristle
2/5
I don't understand industrial/noise music, but props to them for inventing a whole genre.
Magazine
3/5
Some pretty interesting guitar riffs in the songs
JAY Z
2/5
Listening to more hip hop still doesn't make me like it
Blur
4/5
Prior to today, I think the only Blur song I had heard before was Song 2. There has been quite a few Gorillaz songs that I really like, so I was pretty excited to finally check out Blur's music. Overall I quite enjoyed this, and I will probably check out some more of Blur's music after this.
Pentangle
5/5
This was a surprise to me. The first song already had me hooked with its alternating 5/4 and 7/4. Overall really enjoyed this one.
Beatles
4/5
I prefer the Beatles' later work much more than their earlier work, so there was quite a lot of songs on this one that I had never heard of before. But overall, pretty good
Beastie Boys
3/5
Its fine I guess, still not really the biggest fan of hip hop though
Brian Eno
4/5
Brian Eno is another one of those names that I have heard of lots before, but never listened to any of his music, I quite enjoyed this one.
Tom Waits
2/5
Just not really feeling it
ABBA
5/5
5/5 of course. How could you not like ABBA. Their sound and harmonies are instantly recognizable, and overall their songs are just classics.
Kanye West
3/5
Still not really that big a fan of hip hop, but music wise, this wasn't so bad. Also I think the themes present in this album is very interesting and quite relatable to many people across many backgrounds, very refreshing to see a hip hop album where they are not pretending to be gangsters.
Sebadoh
3/5
The songs are definitely quite interesting. I like the lo-fi DIY vibe of all the songs, but not too sure about the atonal elements in some of the songs. Those sound like they could be part of the artistic intent, or it could just be poorly played parts. Guess we'll never know which it really is.
Pink Floyd
5/5
This my favourite album ever. It is a musical masterpiece and it clearly shows as its the best selling album ever.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
I had never actually listened to any Jimi Hendrix albums in their entirety until now, although I have heard lots of his songs. As a guitar player myself, the guitar parts alone in this album is already a lot of unpack, but the couple of songs with experimentations with stereo panning adds so much more.
Madonna
1/5
The songs all sound the same, and none of it was interesting at all. 1/5
Terence Trent D'Arby
4/5
That was pretty good, although i don't think i will be revisiting it anytime soon. 4/5
Garbage
3/5
I thought the songs were not too bad, but also kinda samey. 3/5
Billy Bragg
4/5
I never folk punk was a genre, those seemed like oxymorons to me, nonetheless, this was pretty good. 4/5
Grizzly Bear
5/5
Wow i had never heard of this band or album before, but I think I will definitely be checking out more of their stuff after this. 5/5
Beatles
5/5
So many of my favourite Beatles songs are on this album, and then you get to the songs on this album that aren't as good as the others, and even those are really good songs. On top of that, I think it's crazy that the Beatles were able to make a plain white square one of the most iconic album covers ever.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
5/5
I had heard of the group before but never any of their music. There was a lot here that I really liked.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
I have loved the rolling stones since i was a child
Aphex Twin
3/5
They're nice, but I don't think I'd ever feel like putting this on
Various Artists
5/5
It's a very nice collection of Christmas songs 5/5
Pixies
4/5
It's pretty nice
The KLF
3/5
I'm not the biggest fan of this kind of electronic music, but overall I'd say it wasn't too bad.
Ice Cube
2/5
He's definitely a very good rapper, but rap is not my thing.
B.B. King
4/5
BB King is definitely one of the greatest, although I'm not sure how often I'd be going back to listen to his stuff.
Hugh Masekela
5/5
This is really good
Beatles
5/5
That chord is probably the most iconic intro to any song or album ever.
Nina Simone
5/5
These are really good
Travis
4/5
The songs are pretty good, but they do sound quite similar
The Avalanches
4/5
I quite enjoyed it
Boards of Canada
3/5
Definitely some interesting sounds
The Band
4/5
That was pretty good
Keith Jarrett
5/5
I wish I could play piano like that, or improvise like that on an instrument that I am actually competent in. 5/5
Malcolm McLaren
3/5
I really liked the first song, but the rest of the album not as much.
Thin Lizzy
4/5
I would give this a 5, but it is clear from their perfect playing that there is considerable overdubbing in this live album, which I think makes this live album not really a live album.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
I've never volunteered to listen to any bob marley before this, but I think I get why people like his music.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
It's not bad, but not very interesting to me
Brian Eno
4/5
I really liked it, i wish airports would actually play this stuff.
Paul McCartney and Wings
5/5
Can't believe I've never heard the rest of the songs on this album besides the title track. Paul McCartney's solo career really cements my view that he was the best Beatle.
5/5
I had only heard of PJ Harvey from her contributions to the Desert Sessions which I am a fan of, so it's no surprise that I would enjoy this album too.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
4/5
That was actually pretty interesting and good.
The White Stripes
5/5
I have so much respect for Jack White as a musician and guitarist, but other than seven nation army, I hadn't really ever listened to any of his other music. Listening to this album, I don't understand how anyone can even say Meg White is a bad drummer. She may not be the flashiest drummer but her parts fit all the songs extremely well.
Joanna Newsom
5/5
That was so interesting musically. The orchestral backing was fantastic and the overall vibe of the album sort of reminds me of some disney movies.
Snoop Dogg
3/5
It's not bad, but one thing I don't understand is why these rap albums are all so long.
4/5
It's not bad, but I don't think I'll be listening to this very often in the future
Fugees
2/5
Wasn't really a big fan of this one
1/5
I don't understand noise rock
Amy Winehouse
4/5
What a great voice
Michael Kiwanuka
5/5
Wow these are some great songs, definitely will be listening to these again
Christine and the Queens
1/5
This was just not very interesting
Primal Scream
4/5
That was certainly an interesting listen
Ray Charles
3/5
It's pretty good but, not sure i'll be revisiting this anytime soon
Radiohead
5/5
I can't believe I've never gone to listen to radiohead's music even though I know its exactly the kind of music I love.
Peter Gabriel
4/5
Some very interesting songs
Metallica
4/5
I love metallica, but I have to dock points because of the mixing of the album. How can you possibly call this and justice for all if there is no justice for the bass. Even if the bass were just doubling the guitar riffs, it would have made the guitar riffs so much more rich and thick. But oh well 4/5
Metallica
5/5
Second metallica album in a row, this one I am much more familiar with. I think it says a lot seeing as how so many of the songs on this album ended up become some of Metallica's most famous songs.
Fever Ray
3/5
Not really the most special, but it's not bad either
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
That was pretty decent
Bill Evans Trio
5/5
This was fantastic
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
Girls just wanna have fun is such a good song, the rest of the album was not bad too
k.d. lang
4/5
I liked the songs, but I do feel like they are the same song over and over again
Turbonegro
4/5
That was fun to listen, although I think the album started out really strong with the first song, then none of the other ones really lived up to it
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Stevie wonder never misses
Tortoise
4/5
I really liked it, however it seemed like some parts, like the keyboards in the first song, was just added on without listening to the rest of the song.
Tim Buckley
3/5
It was certainly interesting, but not really the kind that captured my attention
Pulp
4/5
I quite enjoyed this one
5/5
If it weren't for this album, so much of my favourite songs wouldn't exist
Super Furry Animals
4/5
I wasn't expecting much based on the album art, so safe to say this album surprised me. I think the biggest surprise was the the genre, I would've never guessed this was going to be a rock album from the art. I think overall this was a pretty decent album
Billy Bragg
2/5
Not really my kind of thing
Moby
3/5
It was okay
Dinosaur Jr.
3/5
I really wanted to like it, but I just wasn't feeling this one
Michael Jackson
4/5
I've never really cared all that much for MIchael Jackson's music, but I must admit he does make some very good and catchy songs.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
It's fine I guess, the Rolling Stones definitely made much better albums when they started recording their own songs
Jurassic 5
2/5
Didn't really do anything for me
The Byrds
4/5
That 12 string sounds amazing. Overall it's pretty great
Pantera
4/5
This is definitely a vulgar display of power. Idk if I'm really into music as heavy as this as I once was, but there some really good riffs in this album.
Otis Redding
4/5
It's nice, but I don't think this is the kind of music that I will revisit
The Dandy Warhols
4/5
I quite enjoyed this one
Duke Ellington
5/5
Duke Ellington is simply one of the greatest musicians to ever live
Bob Dylan
4/5
It's really good, and I quite like it, but this album did not necessarily wow me like some others
Simon & Garfunkel
5/5
These are such great songs
Soul II Soul
3/5
Not really my favourite kind of music
Iron Maiden
5/5
Reminds me of high school
Frank Zappa
5/5
Holy shit, I gotta listen to more Frank Zappa
Country Joe & The Fish
4/5
The songs are good, I just wish they had practiced a bit more before they recorded, it would've been much better if the recordings were tighter together.
Beastie Boys
3/5
It's not bad, but also not my favourite kind of music
Gil Scott-Heron
5/5
That was very nice music
Nick Drake
5/5
What a great guitarist and singer, such a shame he died so young
Morrissey
2/5
These songs are so boring
My Bloody Valentine
5/5
The production on this album was really cool, and I'm gonna give it an extra point for the jazzmaster on the cover
Supertramp
4/5
I think the album started really strong, kind lost me a little in the middle, but it ended really strong again.
Steve Winwood
4/5
That was pretty enjoyable
Louis Prima
4/5
His voice is so soothing
The Everly Brothers
3/5
I feel like the Everly brothers have better songs than the ones on this album
5/5
David Bowie is such a versatile musician, his albums are always so different, yet so Bowie at the same time
Joan Armatrading
3/5
This album doesn't really click with me
The Waterboys
4/5
This was an interesting listen for sure
Jack White
4/5
This feels like Jack White unleashed himself
Frank Ocean
4/5
That was pretty good, plus I really like the album cover
Marvin Gaye
4/5
The first 2 songs' titles make it seem like he is really confused
PJ Harvey
3/5
This is the second PJ Harvey album I've heard from the list. I feel like the other one I heard was way better than this one. This one is good, but having heard some of her later work, there's clearly much more to be desired from this album.
Dr. Dre
2/5
Not really my thing
a-ha
3/5
I think they might've made a mistake making Take On Me the first song on the album, the rest of the album doesn't really live up to the expectations set by the first song
King Crimson
4/5
I didn't like the first song as much as the rest of the album
Talking Heads
3/5
It's okay, but not great in my eyes
Fatboy Slim
2/5
Not for me
Arcade Fire
3/5
Don't really have much to say about this one
Tina Turner
3/5
It sounds so 80s which might not be a good thing
The Police
3/5
It's not bad, but the songs aren't the most interesting
Jane's Addiction
4/5
It was a pretty interesting listen for sure
Love
3/5
I have such mixed feelings about this one
Harry Nilsson
4/5
I like how he clearly takes the music very seriously, but not the rest of the stuff process. The album cover and title really encapsulates this attitude very well.
Lauryn Hill
1/5
Still not a big fan of hip hop
Dusty Springfield
5/5
She has such a great voice, also the orchestration on some the songs reminds me of James Bond themes
The Only Ones
4/5
The singer sometimes reminds me Jim Morrison, but in some other he sounds like he doesn't care at all
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
This is was the kind of music my grandfather used to play in the car when I was a kid. So much nostalgia when I listen to CCR.
Björk
5/5
All the songs have such thick texture. I really enjoyed the production of the songs, they all seem kind of simple at the top, but when you really listen you start to see all the complexities of them.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
4/5
I liked quite a few of the songs, but I don't really like the narration in some of them, but overall, pretty cool songs
The Clash
3/5
The Clash is definitely one of the most important bands in history, but I don't think this first album really quite captured them yet. All the songs sound the same and it's not all that interesting.
CHIC
5/5
The rhythm section is so tight, and the bass parts especially are so good.
Klaxons
5/5
Wow I really enjoyed this one, plus the album art is so cool
Bob Dylan
3/5
Bob Dylan is definitely very significant to music history, but not the most interesting to listen to for me
Prince
4/5
Prince is undoubtedly a musical genius, the song purple rain is probably one of the best songs ever, but I just wished the rest of the album was at that caliber too
Big Star
4/5
The songs were pretty good
M.I.A.
2/5
A Tribe Called Quest
2/5
Coldplay
4/5
I really liked this one
Korn
3/5
it was interesting, I had never listened to Korn before this, probably not gonna listen to this again, but there were definitely some parts I liked
N.W.A.
3/5
I don't know if I like Ice Cube better as a rapper or as an actor, he's pretty good in both
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
I liked the electric side better
Janet Jackson
1/5
Didn't like this one
Khaled
3/5
I really like the maqams they use in Arabic music, but the production on this album feels kind of bland to me
David Bowie
4/5
Gary Numan
3/5
Not really feeling this one
Charles Mingus
5/5
This might be my favourite album I hadn't heard before so far
Scritti Politti
3/5
There are some interesting parts, but overall, not really my thing
The Rolling Stones
3/5
The album started really strong, but then dropped off
The first 2 songs were really really good, the rest not as much, but overall still quite enjoyed it
Rufus Wainwright
5/5
I quite liked it, its really interesting musically

4/5
Obviously Tiny Dancer is one of Elton John's best songs, but I don't think the rest of the album quite followed it
The Bees
4/5
I like it, its nice and chill
Dr. John
4/5
I liked the music, but man is that cover horrible, what even is that font
Thundercat

3/5
It's not bad, but it didn't really do much for me
Rod Stewart
3/5
I liked the first song, but then the subsequent tracks not as much
