Album Summary

Laugh is the sixth studio album by Keller Williams, released in 2002. Keller Williams is an American singer, songwriter and musician who combines elements of bluegrass, folk, alternative rock, reggae, electronica/dance, jazz, funk, along with other assorted genres. He is often described as a 'one-man jam-band' due to his frequent use of live phrase looping with multiple instruments. Keller Williams was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia on February 4, 1970, and began playing the guitar in his early teens. He later enrolled at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach where he received his degree in theater. After college, he moved to Colorado to advance his music career and expand his repertoire.

Weird as hell, in a good way

Decent jam album, some nice grooves here and there

And now we are back to the users list, after spending 10 albums on the original one again because of the 2026 edition of the book -- which mostly felt like a waste of my time... Unfortunately, this album feels like a waste of time as well. Yay, jam rock and yacht rock, white reggae from the early noughts (ugh!), weird beatboxing -- all sorts of pastiche styles under the sun harnessed for, quote-unquote, "quirky" songs... Keller Williams is obviously a very talented musician, and he is particularly nimble for his bass and guitar performances. But I mean, seriously? So many of these compositions meander from one point to the next without ever displaying one clear sense of direction. Like a joke without a punchline. I am not laughing here, I am merely letting a polite, awkward smile appear on my face. Some moments deep into the album even come off as gravely self-indulgent or near-obnoxious. And the production values sound a bit lackluster to boot, whether for a project recorded "on a budget", or one backed up by more significant financial means. So for me, stating that *Laugh* is an essential listen is a serious mistake -- even if at least, the "errors" for the users list feel human, contrary to the ones of Dimery and co, which look cynical, "calculated", and ignorant where people in the position of being writers for the book are in no position to look *that* ignorant. Another way for me to say that my 1/5 grade for *Laugh* doesn't come from a place of hate, generally speaking. It's mostly boredom that I'm experiencing here. 1/5 for the purposes of this list dedicated to essential albums. 6/10 for more general purposes (4.5 for the musicianship and production values + 1.5 for the artistry) ---- Number of albums from the original list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 466 Albums from the original list I *might* select for mine later on: 293 Albums from the original list I won't select for mine: 343 ---- Number of albums from the users list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 124 Albums from the users list I *might* select for mine later on: 142 Albums from the users list I won't select for mine: 319

Quirky, odd sort of music. Kind of went on too long for me, some of it was enjoyable, some of it wore a bit. A bit of a mishmash that sometimes worked for me.
