AerosmithAwful lyrics, completely dated sound, no place on any greatest albums of all time list
Awful lyrics, completely dated sound, no place on any greatest albums of all time list
Other than 'Freedom 90' the rest of the album is kinda repetitive and slow
I love Madonna, but I really don't think this album should be on this list. Outside of the title song, everything else is kinda bland pop repeating her earlier works and the only reason I can think it's notable is the insane controversy from the title song
Connor: we spent a long time thinking about how to word our review of this album. We didn't really come up with anything suitably impressive.
Connor: I loved this album! It's catchy, danceable, and yet certain songs - especially The Model - seem to have a dark, cold undercurrent that make me feel lonely
Connor: I thought it was OK, it felt cool in a hippie way but not a genre I'm super familiar with
Connor: it's like a 60's South African singer. after the first song which is a bit too... calypso-y? it's an enjoyable enough album, but I feel like it's not exactly life-changingly good. I wouldn't go out of your way to listen. *A Piece of Ground* is a really cool protest song though
Connor: showtunes. boring ones.
Connor: I wasn't a huge fan. The riffs weren't exceptional, which is what this kind of guitar-driven rock seems to rely on, and the whole album sounds like it could've been made 10-20 years earlier - in which case it might have been more unique
Connor: I've never actually heard any Björk so far so I've been really impressed with this album! All I knew of her was her reputation as a little bit of a 'quirky' singer but this album is a lot more dancy and catchy than I thought, and it goes really well with her singing style. Imogen: yeah it’s my favourite Björk album! really like Human Behaviour and Venus as a Boy
Connor: I loved this album! It's catchy, danceable, and yet certain songs - especially The Model - seem to have a dark, cold undercurrent that make me feel lonely
Imogen: "I appreciate it as a good post-rock experimental album, and I like the song Good Morning, Captain, but it’s not something I’d personally listen to that regularly"
Connor: it's not bad... the instrumentals are decent, lighthearted and rhythmic. her voice isn't *bad*, but the vocals mixing is fucking awful. whenever she sings a strong note there's a lot of... static? I guess. It's in need of a remaster definitely
*MTV Unplugged* was OK, and I recognised a lot of songs from in music shops and stuff. I'm not a huge fan of live albums in general though, excluding a few exceptional artists, and the songs didn't really feel that they "added" anything to the studio versions, except getting to hear the covers
Connor: I like the guitar work a lot, everything from the bass and rhythm guitar to the lead and solos. but the vocals lack something for me. Imogen is used to the vocals and really likes them, though
Connor: - great riffs / basslines - distinctive vocal style. unusual, but not unpleasant - liked it a lot more on the second listen
Connor: - really cool mix of groovy rock with unusual rhythms playing against each other - I really liked the choice of instruments in each song, which seems like a weird thing to point out, but they add piano/keyboard and different types of drums in various songs and it always works well, the instrumentals are great - but Costello's voice is quite limited and he tries to do too much with it
I like some of the riffs, but the overall sound and feeling doesn't appeal to me really
Connor: African Jazz. lots of good horns. v much my genre
Imogen: I like it as like soft late 60s music, it’s not that dissimilar from The Kinks, Small Faces etc., I don’t think it’s groundbreaking in any sense, but *Time of the Season* is a great song
Connor: soft rock with country influences, a little forgettable
Awful lyrics, completely dated sound, no place on any greatest albums of all time list
simple boring melodies, uninteresting lyrics and music
Hard Blues Rock. I like the genre, and I can appreciate everything they do technically, but the guy's voice and the overall 'sound' aren't my favourite. The lead guitar solos are consistently good though
Connor: not quite as strong as "What's Going On?", but a few decent grooves. I particularly like the song *Anger*, but overall this genre isn't my favourite
Other than 'Freedom 90' the rest of the album is kinda repetitive and slow
Connor: it's okay. the sound is a little dated, some of the guitar work is decent
I love Madonna, but I really don't think this album should be on this list. Outside of the title song, everything else is kinda bland pop repeating her earlier works and the only reason I can think it's notable is the insane controversy from the title song
Connor: it's a mix between the later psychedelic experiences of later Pink Floyd albums with the earlier psych rock they made. I don't think their sound is quite as developed here - it's a fine album, but nothing that stands out on a first listen
Connor: Another album by a big artist that doesn't really live up to some of their other works. It's kinda repetitive and I'm not a huge fan of the instrumentation. There's also not that much Miles Davis on here, which is curious.
Imogen: A female-driven grunge and alternative rock album. Lyrically focuses on themes of feminism, motherhood and body image, but mocks, rather than conforms to, the 'riot grrl' scene of the 90s. I enjoyed the album, my favourite songs on it being 'Asking For It', 'Jennifer's Body', 'Rock Star' and 'Doll Parts.' And I've sort of struggled with what to rate it because I'd probably give it a 3.5. I admire what it does with giving the female response to the grunge scene, and lyrically is able to highlight women's issues in a way that feels still relevant without it feeling forced. That said, in its inability to cement it being a 4 star for me, I'm going to have to give Live Through This a 3.
Connor: it's a decent album. from the beginning, the first verse is incredible - but it's probably the best on the album. Q-Tip flows great throughout, but the lyrics are a little weak in the middle songs and the beats use cool jazzy instruments but are a little too sparse
Connor: we spent a long time thinking about how to word our review of this album. We didn't really come up with anything suitably impressive.
Imogen: some good songs on this album, but I generally prefer REM's earlier work ('Green', 'Document', 'Lifes Rich Pageant' etc.)
Connor: One of the best Beatles albums
abrasive 80s dream pop. 'Just like Honey' is a classic. prefer their album 'Darklands' though
Connor: Few other hip-hop albums come close to this.
