I Against I
Bad BrainsNever heard of this band. A little punk. A little Metallica-ish. First few songs too screamy for me. Secret 77 almost sounds like it could be a The Police song. I liked their pop-ier stuff.

Never heard much Elvis Costello before. I knew him as that guy with the glasses. I would definitely listen to him and this album again. At parts it almost seemed like a tribute to the Beatles, the bass lines were often very McCartney like, the vocal harmonies/echoes seemed pulled right from early Beatles. I appreciated some of the \"imperfect\"-ness of the vocals, lead and backing.
A surprising number of covers, including a song from "The Music Man." Definitely an album aimed at teenage girls. There are some songs where you can hear them wanting to be a rhythm and blues band. Not a bad song on the album, several are good to very good, and one stone cold killer pop song ("All My Loving"). If I could give 1/2 stars it would be 4 1/2.
This was fine. Not really my style. I can see why people like it. Would be fine background music to work to.
Very Jazzy. Not a single song on here that I recognized. I think this is the guy who did "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." I'm sure I missed a lot of the references that were ripped from the headlines in 1974. "H2Ogate Blues" was my favorite, almost a proto-rap.
I'm glad that this 1001 albums thing gets me to listen to stuff I never would on my own. Also, I didn't like this one. I was waiting for it to end.
Decent album. I liked the title track the best. Kind of a Marshall Tucker Band southern rock/western feel to it.
Just ok. I don't really love the falsetto singing. My favorite parts were when they were singing in their chest voices.
Enjoyable listen. I haven't listened to a ton of Joplin. I'm mostly familiar with "Piece of My Heart." Would listen to again.
Was only kind of aware of Pretenders. It's definitely feels like early 80s punk inspired pop/rock. Since it was released in '79, it was probably influential to a bunch or other bands which is why it's on the list. I don't think I would seek it out, but I wouldn't turn the channel if it came on.
Had this on while working. All the songs kind of blended together, but not in a bad way. Just nice soft pop/hip hop that flows together.
Good music to code by. Another group I'm not familiar with at all. If I had to guess the release year after listening to it, I would have guessed mid to late 70s, so it's probably another example of an album being on the list because it influenced so many others in the genre.
Great album. Birdland is iconic. Will listen to again.
I don't think I've ever knowingly listened to a Wilco song before. It's strange that their popularity is right around the time I would have been listening to popular music. Maybe they just fell in a crack between what the local radio stations would play too rock for country, too country for rock. I hope we get more of them on the list. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Another band I've never hear of. Nice rock album. Enjoyed almost every song. Some of it had a real throw back 50s feel with the bari-sax.
Nice chill, mostly instrumental album. When there was vocals it was way back in the mix. Mostly just coded right through it without it making much of an impression.
Skimmed the wikipedia articles on this band and album. It was interesting to hear they never had much success but were a huge influence on alternative bands like REM. I definitely hear some of that and hear the Beatles influence on them.
Good album. Recognized a couple songs. Another band I should have more experience with, but just don't.
This is the kind of stuff that I was hoping to hear a ton of with this list. Mona- I thought this was Bo Diddley at first. There was another song that sounded just like a chuck berry song.
Wonderful! Sir Duke might be the perfect song. Every song on here is a toe-tapper. Stevie at the height of his power.
Just ok. "Step On" was pretty catchy.
This was fine. Nothing stood out to me.
I always like a little Bob Dylan. He has that tone in his voice that you need to be in the mood for like Willie Nelson or Tom Waits. Tangled up in Blue and Shelter from the Storm are great. Really enjoyed Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts.
I've never listened to a ton of the Rolling Stones. I'm familiar with all their hits, but I forget how "bluesy" they are sometimes. I really enjoyed this album.
Me and Julio... is one of my all time favorites. Paul SImon has a long history of using different instruments. I had to look up what the howling/yipping instrument on that song was. It's a cuica: a type of drum where they adjust the head tension to make that noise. "Papa Hobo" was fun and used a Bass Harmonica like Simon & Garfunkle's "The Boxer" Mother Child Reunion is very good too. The rest of the songs are good, but not terribly memorable.
This was fine. Nothing stood out either way for me.
I've never heard any of these songs or of this band, and this album came out right in the middle of my prime popular music listening (high school). I'm sure it was influential or ground breaking in some way, but it just seemed like mediocre music from the 90s
Very 80s. Probably an album that helped define the decade. A lot of the songs sound similar. "Don't you want me" is great.
A lot of talk-sing-ing, but not in a good Cake way. A little house music/dance music feel to some songs. Not offensive, not memorable.
Not bad. I thought I'd only be familiar with "Want You to Want Me," but I recognized "Surrender" as well. I didn't realize Cheap Trick had so much punk sound to them, but I only knew their one hit and it is the least punk on the album.
Tambourine man is great, the rest... ho hum.
An album I was completely unaware of. I know Dion from Dion and the Belmonts, but his late solo album was completely new. I enjoyed quite a few of the songs.
Bittersweet symphony was a nostalgic listen otherwise just ok.
I liked the folk-y stuff more than the psychodelic stuff.
Impressive how in control Janis can be while sounding like she's out of control vocally. Me and Bobby McGee, is an all time great song. Kris Kristofferson sings his song well, but Janis owns it.
