Smash
The Offspring
1.) Time To Relax: 5/10
Decent intro. Prefer the intro to Shellac’s Prayer to God
2.) Nitro (Youth Energy): 6.1/10
Alright sounding punk song. Not much to say really
3.) Bad Habit: 7.5/10
Really loved the intro ngl. Pretty cool lyrics and nice melody
4.) Gotta Get Away: 5.9/10
Decent punkish song I guess
5.) Genocide: 7.6/10
Immediately enjoyed the faster pace. Cool lyrics and nice hook. Dog eat dog.
6.) Something To Believe In: 6.6/10
Nice fast pace again. Didn’t enjoy as much as Genocide though
7.) Come Out and Play: 6.5/10
Everyone knows this song for literally the first part. Nice lil surf riff (that’s my favorite part ngl)
8.) Self Esteem: 5/10
The other song everyone knows. My band was gonna play this but it got cut. Don’t like it as much as Come Out and Play. Sounds tired.
9.) It’ll Be A Long Time: 6.9/10
This is a jumpstart from Self Esteem and a much needed one at that. The faster pace actually makes me enjoy it way more than Self Esteem. More punky. Kind of a tired trite version of punk that’s been done to death but punky nonetheless.
10.) Killboy Powerhead: 6.3/10
Like the title. Sounds like a Big Black title. The punkish sound they’re going for is kinda wearing off on me. Album seems fairly one note to me ngl.
11.) What Happened to You?: 6.8/10
Nice change of sound. Very ska influenced since Sublime’s Ten Oz. To Freedom had been out for two years by this point. Vocals sound too polished across this whole album ngl. Double tracked too well I guess. Seems unnatural.
12.) So Alone: 6.2/10
Punk song to its very core (just over a minute long)
13.) Not The One: 5.6/10
Nice lyrics. Whole album’s kinda wearing at me by this point
14.) Smash: 5.8/10
Oooh hidden track. Not as good as Endless, Nameless though (although nothing can be). Cool lil surfy jam though (I recognize the song yet cannot for the life of me figure out the name)
Final rating: Strong 4/Light 5
Just kinda felt like the mainstream perception of punk in the worst way possible. Did have some bangers though.

The Boatman's Call
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
1.) Into My Arms: 7.9/10
Very nice intro track. Sweet love song. Already like the sparseness of it
2.) Lime Tree Arbour: 7.2/10
Like the outro
3.) People Ain’t No Good: 7.4/10
I can already see the early Tom Waits influence on this entire intro. Nice vibraphones. Always like a good vibraphone arrangement. Sounds like a funeral wake almost.
4.) Brompton Oratory: 7.6/10
Already like the toy sounding drum machine. Nice organ
5.) There Is A Kingdom: 5/10
Nice nylon string. Kinda got the vibe from the beginning that I wasn’t gonna like this one that much. Nothing really proving that wrong. Whole album is kinda one note so far but that’s not necessarily bad thing. It’s a good note and a good sound; it just kinda lacks variety I guess.
6.) (Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For?: 7.1/10
I can really hear the early Tom Waits influence in his voice now. This one sounds darker. More sinister. I like it. Might just be the darker key. Nice Hi-Hat sound
7.) Where Do We Go Now but Nowhere: 5/10
The sound is starting to wear on me a little. Still a good sound but you can only do it for so many songs before it starts
to get old.
8.) West Country Girl: 6.8/10
Instantly different vibe and sound so I’m all for it. Like the steel sounds of the strings. Sounds real and genuine.
9.) Black Hair: 7.1/10
Nice harmonium(?)
10.) Idiot Prayer: 6.6/10
The title reminds me of The Idiot Sun by Leviathan so there’s that. Kinda groovy ngl
11.) Far From Me: 6/10
Nice atmosphere so far
12.) Green Eyes: 8.5/10
This one is interesting so far. I could tell it was different from the start. Like the spoken word vocals over the sung vocals. This one sounds sadder ngl. Lyricism is pretty good. Feels very raw.

Beautiful Freak
Eels
1.) Novocaine for the Soul: 8/10
This is very interesting so far. Very alt rock sounding but that doesn't impede or shoehorn the sound so far. Nice rasp on the vocals ngl.
2.) Susan's House: 8/10
Immediate nice groove. Oooh I like that mellotron sounding flute. Nice spoken word vocals. Sounds like a newscaster honestly. Kinda fits with the tone of the lyrics. Based lyrics
3.) Rags to Rags: 6/10
This whole album has had a nice groove going across the whole thing so far. Kinda Blur sounding ngl
4.) Beautiful Freak: 7/10
Nice electric piano. This sounds similar to Ben Folds ngl
5.) Not Ready Yet: 6/10
Nice distorted piano.
6.) My Beloved Monster: 8/10
THIS IS IN THE FUCKING SHREK SOUNDTRACK OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T NOTICE SOONER THAT'S WHY IT SOUNDS LIKE BEN FOLDS. pretty based song though
7.) Flower: 6/10
8.) Guest List: 7.5/10
The bass end added a lot to this song. Kinda groovy ngl

Can't Buy A Thrill
Steely Dan
1.) Do It Again: 7.8/10
Already technically listened to this album but I'll listen to it again. I prefer Steve Albini over Steely Dan but I still enjoy some good Steely Dan every now and then. Already pretty funky and groovy. Funk for music nerds/theory teachers. Nicely produced vocals ngl. Nice reverb to em
2.) Dirty Work: 6/10
Nice tender vocals as opposed to Fagen's very powerful vocals.
3.) Kings: 8.6/10
This is one of two songs on this album that I like actively listen to. I know Do It Again and Reelin in the Years because they're hits but this and Fire in the Hole are my two favorites off the record
4.) Midnite Cruiser: 7.4/10
Love the piano and guitar sounds already. Also love the word Felonious. It's too innately unserious to be taken seriously.
5.) Only A Fool Would Say That: 6/10
I looked up the Wikipedia Article for yacht rock and it said that the lyrics of yacht rock are often about sensitive heart broken men which often use the word fool as a prerogative. Fitting.
6.) Reelin in the Years: 7/10
This is the song everyone knows. Like everyone who has ever heard music or of Steely Dan has heard this song.
7.) Fire in the Hole: 9/10
I fucking love this song. This is definitely my favorite Steely Dan song. It's definitely the jazziest song on this record if not all of Steely Dan's discography. And also the piano solo fucking bangs. Very Thelonious Monk-esque in its early dissonance. Sounds like someone slamming on the keys the entire time and it's absolutely great. Not quite as chaotic as the actual Thelonious Monk but it's close enough for a Steely Dan record.
8.) Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me): 7.4/10
Got a nice vibe already. Relaxed but also jazzy which is nice. Nice chord changes too
9.) Change of the Guard: 6.2/10
10.) Turn That Heartbeat Over Again: 6.9/10
