Popular Reviews

Blue by Joni Mitchell

Not on Spotify which doesn't help. Sadly this album does nothing for me, obviously it's a classic that's loved so it must be me but for whatever reason I find it like listening to paint dry - not unpleasant but nothing of interest to me

Dookie by Green Day

Never listened to this as a teenager so I'm coming in fresh as a forty two year old man. And I'm like ugh this is boring. Why do they all sound exactly the same? On the plus side I like short songs. Just not these ones. I reckon it would be good live maybe. Nice cover art. I'm struggling

Surfer Rosa by Pixies
Oct 09 2023

A good album but doesn't do much for me - bit too arty and don't feel the lyrics - cactus/gigantic/where is my mind are nice tracks though can't deny.

The White Album by Beatles
Oct 10 2023

A classic album for me. Or maybe three solo albums jumbled up. Lennon is on top form and as a Beatles geek I love the mythology. This album I had on double cd at school - really contributed to my musical taste.

Graceland by Paul Simon
Oct 11 2023

Surprised at how much I liked this. Love African type guitar and drums anyway and some outrageous jazzy bass playing. I'd actually like the instrumental version. Lyrics and singing probably not my kind of thing - but still liked it. The synths are a bit too naff 80s at times - think with real instruments it would have aged better

Beautiful Freak by Eels
Oct 16 2023

I like this album. Not sure it should be on a classic list but it's nice, inventive, found it moving at times, clever, nice. Yeah.

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Oct 17 2023

Absolutely brilliant. He is blessed with a voice that makes you believe anything he sings. Love the Baritone on dark as a dungeon. Only down side I had this on cd for years and have played it to death

Oct 23 2023

Yeah a really cool sounding album. I like the sound of this era - the main and backing vocals work really well together. Some of the stories drag on a bit and I'm not a massive cowboy fan but that's a small quibble

Brilliant Corners by Thelonious Monk
Oct 24 2023

I'm sure there's loads going on here but it's lost on me - just sounds like all other old jazz

Scream, Dracula, Scream by Rocket From The Crypt
Nov 01 2023

On a rope is a classic, not sure what makes it work so well it just does. Rest didn't really grab me but songs are short which helps

Zombie by Fela Kuti
Nov 09 2023
Back to Basics by Christina Aguilera
Nov 10 2023

I like the idea of working with Dj premier - although when I'm listening to his beats I'm just thinking wow jayz would sound amazing on this. I like the idea of this album - have it on cd somewhere - but her voice is too overpowering for me it just dominates everything. I'm still team Britney

Dire Straits by Dire Straits
Nov 13 2023

Yeah. I think knopfler has written some great songs and great guitar player, something in the performances though struggles to keep my attention, like some of the songs here seem really long to me but it could be I just need to pay more attention. Great guitar tone obvs

Sea Change by Beck
Nov 14 2023

I really liked this - never heard it before - sounds like Scott walker who I love. Probably one of my favourites so far

Revolver by Beatles
Nov 15 2023

Obviously a classic. I love Lennon but think this is McCartney's time to shine. Eleanor rigby just genius. Got to get you into my life and good day sunshine are like Motown crossed with British rock. Lennon has some solid tunes like and your bird can sing and the pretty amazing tomorrow never knows

Blonde On Blonde by Bob Dylan
Nov 16 2023

Yeah I think this is pretty amazing. I want you what a brilliant song, great imagery. Just like a woman not sure if this is patronising to women but still feels like a classic song.

Closer by Joy Division
Nov 17 2023

Not one of my favourites. Not keen on the depressing singing voice and I like a bit of post punk groove but couldn't get into this one

Let's Stay Together by Al Green
Nov 20 2023

Brilliant stuff - love the sound of the guitar and drums, voice fantastic if a little bit too falsetto for my taste give me Johnny cash any day

Marquee Moon by Television
Nov 21 2023

I remember a few years ago I read Julian copes book and this album was one of the ones he cited as a massive influence. I got it at the time but wasn't massively for me.

I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen
Nov 30 2023

I'm a massive Leonard Cohen fan - he's written some of my favourite songs ever. But often his arrangements are pants and especially in the 80s, it's almost unlistenable to me it sounds like karaoke backing tracks I used to hear in Russia in 2001. Still I like the voice and lyrics to an extent but think this isn't his best work

The College Dropout by Kanye West
Dec 12 2023

I love Kanye as a producer - great production on this album. His rapping I find a bit annoying really but the guests keep it going here

The Who Sell Out by The Who
Dec 13 2023

What a weird album. Sounds like the avalanches or something a hip hop DJ would put together maybe prince Paul. I found it quite distracting and then when the songs come in they're nothing mind blowing to me.
