Adele
Almost seems quaint when compared to the heights she's since reached. Beautiful, compelling songs. I didn't know that she was signed to XL Records. That seems, again, dwarfed by how her legacy has grown. I'm struck by how it has a Muscle Shoals "session musician" feel to it, like a Dusty Springfield album might. Truly powerful, beautiful stuff.

Bat Out Of Hell
Meat Loaf
Like the soundtrack to a musical that didn't exist for another 40 years. Where other rock operas stretched rock music out to the grandiose limits of opera, Meat Loaf instead confines all that is opera into the form of a rock song. Earnest. Bombastic. Ridiculous and refined. Glam as grit. And truly emblematic of those aching teenage years, at least more so than any of the moodiness that you think it's all about at the time.

James Brown Live At The Apollo
James Brown
That's gotta be the tightest live band of all time. It sounds clean and contemporary. James and his Flames put on one hell of a show. You can't go wrong what the sub-half-hour runtime, too. This thing would be BLOATED if it came out today, but instead, it's a lean, mean R&B machine.

Straight Outta Compton
N.W.A.
Yeah, it's Straight Outta Compton. It revolutionized everything, and set a clear division between what came before and what came after. What else, really, am I going to write about? Eazy-E is a better rapper than Dr. Dre is.

Vanishing Point
Primal Scream
With little knowledge of their earlier records, I have very little context for this album. But, holy moly it's got some depth to it. They're really aiming for something here. Cosmic lounge music pushed through a heavy psychedelic filter. Like if a robot bartender took acid in the deserts on Mars.

Blue Cheer
Brilliant proto-metal. Hard to understand how this is the progenitor when so much sounds exactly like it. But I feel like that context is pretty fundamental to enjoying this album. However, even stripped of its historical significance, there are some great tunes on this albuM!

This isn't available in the United States, so I had to skip this one. I'm going to make up for it by diving into the rest of their discography! Just not right now!
