Feb 03 2024

It's long and essentially two full length solo albums. Big Boi's Speakerboxxx is dirty southern rap and Andre's The Love Below is more jazzy and soulful, spawning the mega hit "Hey Ya!". I have to say I liked The Love Below a lot more than Speakerboxxx but the later isn't without its merits. The duo tends to be stronger working together and the best songs on Big Boi's album feature Andre3000 but not exactly vice versa. Overall an interesting listen but at 2 hours and 15 minutes it's a commitment.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
Feb 04 2024

Semi improvisational with all kinds of interesting instrument and percussion songs. Her spoken word experimental jazz is one of the most interesting things I've heard this year.

Tidal by Fiona Apple
Feb 05 2024

Simply beautiful. Where has this and her other albums been my whole life? I never realized how much Fiona Apple influenced some of my favourite artists. Excellent listen and absolutely why doing the 1001 Albums Challenge was a good idea.

Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg
Feb 06 2024

I liked it more than I thought I would. It's cohesive and gets you in the mindset it sets out to.

Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C.
Feb 07 2024

The origin of hip hop hitting the mainstream and the accidental birth of nu metal 10 years later, what's not to love?

Feb 09 2024

Very enjoyable jam band record with a variable who's who of guest musicians contributing. However, in the context of 1001 Albums to hear before you die, I probably could have died without hearing this album.

The Cars by The Cars
Feb 10 2024

Maybe the birth of new wave? Either way a hit machine that paved the way for the next 10 years of pop/rock music.

Real Life by Magazine
Feb 11 2024

Inventive and so musically interesting. I'd never heard of Magazine before but this was truly a great album.

Feb 12 2024

Cee-lo is a creep so I wanted to rate this lower but it is a funky, fun album. Do you need to hear it before you die? Absolutely not.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Feb 13 2024

One of many incredible albums by Pink Floyd. What else is there to even say on this one that hasn't been said already.

Dare! by The Human League
Feb 14 2024

Full of underproduced, whiny songs but anchored by the massive hit Don't You Want Me. I had more fun learning about the groups history on wikipedia then I did actually listening to their music. This album was certainly influential but if I'm rating it based on my actual tastes and enjoyment I had with the album, I give it a 2/5

Funeral by Arcade Fire
Feb 16 2024

Loved this album in high school and love it still!

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins
Feb 17 2024

Better listened to in segments as it's LONG. Billy's voice is annoying but there's a lot of great songs on this album and they're spaced nicely throughout the tracklist so if you do listen to all in one go, it's never boring.
