Graceland by Paul Simon

Ok, I tried listening to this album twice honestly. Maybe it's because I never gave Paul Simon or Simon and Garfunkel a fair chance, or maybe because I hate myself, who knows. Have you ever seen "Get Him to the Greek" where Russell Brand's band releases the album "African Child"? This is like the album that movie is trying to satirize. What a bunch of self-congratulating drivel this album was.

Blackstar by David Bowie
Jun 16 2024

Experimental. I appreciate what Bowie was going through when he recorded this, and this album is definitely deep and melancholy. It's brilliant, but I definitely would not recommend it as an everyday listen.

Natty Dread by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Jun 16 2024

Honestly, every song was great. I love Bob Marley, but listening to all tracks of this album have helped me appreciate it more.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath

I'm biased. I love Black Sabbath, I was raised by someone who loved Black Sabbath. There's only 5 tracks on this album, but two of them are 3 or 4-in-ones and "The Wizard" is a metal song with heavy harmonica use. I love this album and you will too.

The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald
Jun 26 2024

Well, I'm happy to get this album out of the way early. I didn't listen to the whole thing because I don't have 3 hours today -- listening to 3 hours of one artist in a sitting is a lot for me, even if it's my favorite band. I really appreciate Ella Fitzgerald and, although I don't have a great ear for Jazz, I like that I had the chance to learn more about her art. However, my one complaint is that this album is included at all in this list. It's a longer collection project moreso than an album, as Ella was creating her own rendition of an already existing songbook.

There were some great songs on here, but New Wave has always been a hit or miss genre for me. I hear the Talking Heads and Oingo Boingo and I can't get enough, but then there's groups like the Eurythmics and the Human League and I just can't find myself getting excited about their music. Overall, this was sound, but it just wasn't for me.

I love 90s rap but I never gave Ice Cube a deep listen. All of these tracks tell a story and, while some are definitely dated, I think he's got some good social commentary about being black and poor in LA

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Jul 02 2024

One of my favorite albums of all time, this maybe cemented Kendrick as one of, if not the best rap lyricists of all time.
