Difficult to see past my lack of surprise at any of the musical choices for this album. I’m sure this was at one point fresh, but to my ear this album sounded vapid, catchy, mellifluous but nothing more
Thought I liked the end half of the album turned out Spotify moved me onto related albums which were just way more experimental and interesting. not quite sure where the album ended but fuck it there’s only so much 12 bar blues you can hear even if it’s pretty decent 12 bar blues
A pretty flawless example of a genre that just isn’t for me. Mega compressed production, catchy guitar riffs, flashy solos, big anthemy guitar riffs, provocative chanty riffs. Just sits so well in a big stadium, but from the production to the vocals and lyrics to the composition (mostly) there’s just no depth for me.
I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would, but almost definitely not enough to ever listen to it again. It sounds like a proper anthology of 2000s music, which weirdly felt ahead of it’s time as a 1997 album. All still within the narrow scope of 2000s radio rock but a relatively decent range.
Still some proper cringe moments though. Pretty on the nose lyricism about the class divide in the titular song, which was surprising but felt like a gcse English language unempathetic retelling of common people. ‘Clean’ made me feel really weird, the sterilised optimism of a person struggling with addiction really evoked an emotion that I’m not sure was intended.
Soft spot for queens theatrical/rock queen sound, especially with the harder rock influences of early queen albums. Still a lot of that classic queen loveably cheesy sound they found on the later records.
Nonsense solo on Brighton rock, loved the use of delay to self harmonise.
Absolutely loved the super fuzzy guitar compliment to the vocals, and the overall harmonic narrative. Compositionally just beautiful.
Flick of the wrist was uncharacteristically classic metal (obviously with that queen tilt). Loved Freddie’s interpretation of that grandiose classic metal snarly vocals in the verses.
Banging album. Definitely one to sit down and listen to, as opposed to a casual listen. Really loved how the varied instrumentation across the album kept the songs feeling varied.
Sweet album, cult of personality is a clsssic tune. Always feel like I want a bit more funk and less classic metal in this funk metal band though. Felt myself tuning out at points.
One of my fave albums of all time. I think it’s because most tracks weave that that classic Radiohead pervasive uncertainty and slightly tense harmonic state into such a listenable mellifluous composition.
Everything makes sense, but in a way you’d never compose yourself. This is true in the harsh programmatic drums in 15 step, the bass/guitar interplay in nude, the wandering fuzzy bass in all I need.
This album sounds like an introspective moment which leaves you feeling at once uncomfortable but peaceful under the newfound clarity.
Nice crunchy album. Modern production on a well tried theme. I like it a lot
Sick album 5 stars love seeing flea do his thing. Wish the funk continued with the band. Also love keidis’ nonsense poetry I could listen to him whisper his meaningless stream of consciousness forever (until he gets weirdly sexual which were my most uncomfortable moments of the album)
Objectively good album especially given cultural impact. love early snoop flow but g-funk rarely sparks joy. Some neat little production moments but more of an intellectual enjoyment than emotional
Super well constructed album, sounds great. Enjoy that the album bleeds into each other, sometimes electronic albums can sound a bit out of place as it suits a live set more than a straight listening experience. That said there were some shit mixes esp after two hearts which what the fuck is the need when you get to sit down and curate an album unlike a set. There’s no rush?? You can do more than just fade the songs. At points I’m left uninspired by not hugely creative use of samples, if you’re gonna use 3500 samples fuck then up a bit ygm? Otherwise it’s just Lego. Frontier psychiatrist is a classic
A difficult one to rate. Put gently idk if I can relate to all the imagery? But it’s told in such an intuitive way esp in the more narrative based songs. And honestly it feels endearingly emotionally authentic? This album feels like when you have a DMC with a proper wrongun’ at the end of the night and you’re glad you have a story but never want to see them again
Increasingly convinced. Weird production, I get the experience of joining bjork in a cubicle. What’s not to like
Unpretentious shallow pentatonic riffs that might seem stale in hindsight but keep fresh under Turner’s direct and authentic storytelling. As a sum of simple parts it has no right to hold up as well as it does, just puts you in a sweaty dark venue where you belong. As an album it maybe trades this for replayability compared to later albums (excluding a handful of songs), and at points it maybe like I care more for the energy than the songwriting, but to me that’s an absolutely valid genre of album.
Did not expect to rate the paper planes girls album. Super forward thinking for a 2005 album feel like this album could come out this year and feel fresh
It’s fine. Less surprising or engaging than the ambient sounds of the overground I’ve heard for the last 3 and a half years though. Dennis Wilson said this album had no substance and who am I to disagree with a beach boy
A groovy fucking record. Just fully in the pocket all the way through. Will never go without a fat saturated brass solo. Idk enough about trumpets or sax to know where that tone comes from but you know when it sounds like somebody’s been smoking a pack of day right through those tubes? I’m even okay with the scat as era appropriate.
Based on one song it might be a decent album. I was in a really good mood when I was listening though
Don’t usually get into classic heavy metal but this album did get me pumped. Truly the entire song structure is just the salad beside the beef wellington guitar sits, but honestly it does a good job. I’m into it
Sick ambient I have a lot of space for ambient 90s electronic music. Very few points where I didn’t think the production held up. Halcyon is obviously a banger but also loved the tr303 usage in the first half of the album.
Struggle to get into classic punk. But it’s just so nice? And pleasant? Lyrics aside everything is so bouncing and major. Love the energy and what this album represented to the era
could barely get through it. Lifeless
This album feels like gripping a raw chicken breast with freshly washed hands. Never felt more connected to life, it was disgusting.
No fucking need to listen jfc the last time I was cried it was to watching the end of where did you sleep last night. The eyes, the gig context, the relative truthfulness of the gig compared to the emotional absence of Kurt in live gigs. I’d be hard pressed to find a live performance more meaningful than this. As an album I’d rate it lower, so I guess only 5 stars.
