Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

Ohhhhhh a classsiccccc.
It's great, heard it many times before
Yup, heard it a bunch. It's good, but not his best
Heard it a bunch. It's got some classics, but also this sound was super short lived and it is not my favorite. They do it better than anyone else I've heard do it tho. It's a classic, but by no means one I come back to frequently. They come across as all energy, and the songwriting isn't that outstanding to me, even tho that's not necessarily the focus of the band. And while it doesn't factor into my rating of this album... GNR has one of the most puzzling discographies in popular rock music.
It's cool. I only know a few trip-hop projects, and some of the others I've heard I prefer. That being said, I will definitely be giving this more listens to digest fully, so my rating is likely to go up over time.
It's cool but it's not my favorite by him. One of those albums in between the great ones where he was finding his next step
It's a nice jazz record. The Hammond Organ is not my fav color in the jazz world, but the tunes here groove and the playing is great. I have nothing bad to say about it, but it doesn't blow my socks off like other jazz records have. Would absolutely put on in the bkgrnd tho
This is pretty good. From that era where the 90's bands still sounded like 80's bands but a lot darker. Was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable this is. It may not make the circle of an all time favorite for me, but I added a few tracks to playlists and would happily give this more spins
A classic that I would have loved more back in High School, had I given their whole discography a shot. It's good. Good songs. But I do think they went on to do better things. Jack has put out much more interesting stuff in his solo career. But it's a solid album
Very 70s. Reminds me a lot of early solo George Harrison, but it's not working for me as much. I think I don't really connect with his voice/melodies, which is entirely a personal preference thing. Oh and I'm getting a lot of Lennon on 'Baby Let's Stick Together'. This sounds kind of like 70's Beatles imitation. Except there's no Admiral Halsey. I feel like I've heard this sound before. He's not bad by any means. He's just not providing me with anything that stands out. And the songs are really long. It's funny, on Spotify they paired this album into one with 'Streetheart', which apparently people don't like as much. But I much preferred the songs off of the 'Streetheart' portion. I noticed he didn't write a lot of the material here. It just feels to me like an album that exists. It made basically no impact on me. But his other stuff sounds like an improvement of this. And even the Phil Spector production doesn't do it for me.
This is sick
Just... not my style
It's good, but it's not their best. It falls right between two great albums in their discography. It has a bunch of great songs, but in my opinion it falls flat compared to a handful of others in their discography
Holy crap. One of the eras of rock music that was so awesome to me. This is great. Honestly if I had more time to listen it might be a 5, but first impressions is a strong 4
oh yeah. The Kanye West production is pretty clear. This era of hip hop is not always my favorite, but I can just imagine this playing at a bar and it would bang. Okay but Faithful is amazing. I really do like this, I'm just not the biggest fan of this sound. Maybe it will grow on me more
This is nice. I like the classic Motown production. But it didn't really move me.
I really like the debut, never gave this one a solid shot before. This band is very over-hated. I mean they've put out some garbage. Don't love the opener as a whole song. The outro is great tho. Reminds me of the lates 90s early aughts space rock stuff. And it sounds very classic Coldplay. Obviously I know Clocks and The Scientist. They're great songs but I think they're a little slow tempo wise and don't have a lot of variation - preventing them from reaching their full potential. Coldplay is like U2 in a lot of ways to me. They put out stuff that is so easy to vibe with, it almost becomes soulless at times, but they still stick a lot of landings. It's funny I know they get compared to Radiohead a lot. God Put a Smile Upon Your Face sounds a lot like what Radiohead would do in the year after this album came out. I think the problem for me is Coldplay sounds too clean, too perfect. Very Metronomey. I think about like Mew and how they have a very steady yet energetic sound. Rock music works for me cause it is so rough and imperfect at times. So at that point Coldplay is basically pop music, parading as rock music. I think if it was produced a little more like pop music it would shimmer a bit more. All of this is to say, there's nothing wrong with liking Coldplay. But from a music nerd perspective, there's little reason to actively choose to listen to them frequently. But if someone puts them on, I'm not complaining, and I'm probably singing along. But after listening a few times, God they just refuse to take any risks or do anything interesting with these well written songs.
A classic. It took me a while to get into Metallica, but they're awesome. I probably prefer Ride the Lightning, but there is a reason this album is beloved. It is Ride the Lightning but dialed up a notch. I just prefer the songs on Ride The Lightning by a smidge, but they're both insanely good.
I love 80s hardcore. They just have the energy. Also learned today that this was an Ian MacKaye band. So cool, what a legend.
Ooohn nice. Emmylou Harris is one of my favorite country artists, glad she's on this project. I love 70's country. It's got such a nice timbre to it. I will say I've heard better 70's country albums tho. The first half doesn't quite have the hooks I would hope for. It's fun tho. $1000 Wedding is fantastic. And basically from there on it was on the up and up
Oh boy, time to stir up controversy. I have never cared much for this album. I think it has a great concept. The Film is good. The lyrics are good. It has some great songs. But as an album listen thru... it just does not work for me. It's a little too all over the place, especially on the second half. At that point the whimsy overpowers anything actually interesting going on with the music. Another Brick in the Wall (all 3), Goodbye Blue Sky, Young Lust, Comfortably Numb, Hey You... all classics. And there's even more songs on there that I love and listen to regularly. But as an album...? I would take pretty much anything else from Echoes to Division Bell over this.
I need to give this a few listens. First impression, I like but a few of the songs missed for me. I do like that late 80s early 90s hip hop sound a lot. But some of these songs failed to capture my attention as much as an NWA or a Beastie Boys. But about half of it is absolute bangers. Who Stole The Soul is insane. The title track too.
