Better on revisit than i’d expected. The sprawl is an all timer
Too many soppy strings for my 2025 ears. Gaye’s voice is perfect though.
sort of hard to overcome the "rush" of it all, but honestly enjoyed this more than I thought I would. heavier than I realized, too.
Raw, hard, electric. The connection with the audience is two-way. Maybe an all time great live album.
Dre’s production is good but snoop kind of sucks on this? Pretty forgettable.
Funk, strings, gets a little long, even at 37 minutes.
This is, it's true, a pretty uneven album. but for one thing it's impossible to separate myself from who I was when it came out. and also, the highs are so good, and the whole thing does a great job of creating a sonic world that's consistent throughout.
If I’d heard this in 1992, or really any time before 5 years or so ago, I’d have thought this is far too preachy. And…I mean, it IS preachy. But in 2025 it sounds just about right?
Woof, hard to get past what I guess we call in 2025 the “toxic masculinity” here. Obviously super important etc. but yeesh, especially hard to take after the last album I got served, the disposable heroes of hiphoprisy
The lyrics are terrible, the rapping is terrible, the metalling is terrible. Pretty good screaming. I would’ve hated this even as a troubled teen. It sucks.
Hasn’t aged super well but when you’re an iconic landmark album I guess you don’t have to
A classic (obviously not THE classic) from one of my favorite bands. When I first heard this, after 20 or so obsessive listens to loveless, I felt disappointed by the difference between the two albums. On revisit, though, it stands on its own as a truly great album.
Early 00’s psychedelia was alright. Man this a bit too British for my taste though.
I remember the first time I heard this album how blown away I was by the guitar tone. It seems less important or notable now than I remember it then. I think in a lot of ways this album also benefits from being pre straightforward than bitch’s brew, which I heard first and which made this seems a lot more focused and accessible. I still think it’s great, regardless of my first time listens.
This is fine. I think maybe in a different mood or a different day I'd appreciate this more, because the songs are perfectly constructed and her voice is great, etc. And yet I found it kind of a slog to get through this, even though it's a 30 minute album.
Obviously, bookended by bangers. But man the middle is pretty mushy. I kind of forgot about how many squishy mid-tempo ballads there are here. Meh!
I bet I would have liked this better if I'd been able to hear it when it came out. There are some edges that just haven't aged super well. But overall a very strong album. Not something I'll run back to, but not bad at all.
I have so many happy memories of this album, and I'm delighted to find how well it's aged. Probably it benefits a bit from how poor most of what came after this was, but it's undeniably great.
Probably better than I would have guessed or expected. I think this is the first time I ever listened to an entire Leonard Cohen
