Holger CzukayIt has layers, dude. LAYERS.
It has layers, dude. LAYERS.
Jeff didn't like the vocals but liked the harmonies Tamara didn't like the downer songs but liked the more upbeat ones We both liked the instrumentation and can appreciate that it was groundbreaking for its day
In awe of their lyrics & thinking about what they experimented with, like the Middle Eastern influences. In love with their harmonies always. Really want to give this a 4.5 lol Last track had me a bit doomerpilled thinking "nothing really changes" though
Huge Nick Cave fan but not my favorite album, I like the albums with more of an edge to them. BF liked the lyricism and called them reminiscent of Leonard Cohen & Lou Reed
Cheerful with depressing lyrics. Very "take me back to the old days" ironically. Pretty cool for its era though
Respect his contributions to music and his political importance, but this album was pretty repetitive and seemed to all blend together after a while
Liked it more with the sampling, trip-hoppy stuff but less so when it leaned into jazz territory, but definitely interested in hearing more
In general it was cool with the classic country bluegrass sound and some nice, rich elements to it...however. That last song was like a horse tranquilizer and there is NO REASON it needed to be 15 minutes long, taking a full point off for that nonsense. Disappointed that I didn't like this as much as I hoped I would because this genre is sort of in my wheelhouse
He has an awesome voice and this whole album is a bop. Definitely enjoyable to listen to and felt like a party
I found the lyrics pretty simplistic but the music and the harmonies were enjoyable. It's hard to appreciate this album when so much of music thereafter has been influenced by them so it doesn't really "sound" groundbreaking anymore
Really interesting with a lot of layers, almost felt cinematic at times
Of course you shouldn't die without listening to a Miles Davis album, but while this was enjoyable it felt like background music. Don't really have the ears to appreciate jazz I guess
Pretty decent instrumentals, but when I think of 1,000 albums that I have to listen to I'm wondering how this managed to make the cut. It's all right but not world-shattering.
Not a huge fan of his voice (if I want a nasal voice I'll take Tom Petty any day), but this was a nice bridge into the 80s and New Wave.
Delightfully hit all the metal cliches I expected, can definitely see why Bill & Ted idolized them. Everything you want out of cheesy 80s metal, but don't know if it's ever going to speak to me the way it did to people back then
That was tiiiiiiight, start to finish bangers. Elements of metal and psychedelia and staaaaanky guitars. Will be injecting directly into my eardrums
I liked the incorporation of the operatic elements and the composition was great but I prefer their more energetic stuff
He's obviously talented and there's a lot of depth to this album but I am definitely not the target audience for this. The message is lost on me
Pretty standard 70s singer-songwriter. Composition is slightly above-average, very solid lyrics. Still think American Pie should have been the last track, not the first
Their best songs are the covers. Lyrics are overall frankly weak and cliche. The compositions are pretty good and I liked the harmonies, more country-tinged than I anticipated. The last song really saved this album for me, I really dig those trad folk murder ballads
This is so ingrained in me, such a product of it's time but also a harbinger of things to come. So much variety between tracks. Didn't always care for the noise rock elements but they practically invented it so... Anyway it's a vibe and I wish I'd had some herbal refreshment beforehand
There's some siiiiick riffs here, thanks for inventing metal, guys <3
Absolute hot garbage start to finish. The soundtrack to drywall punching, cookie monster pajama pants wearing, catalytic converter theiving, high school dropouts with a chip on their shoulder the size of Wisconsin
Surprisingly goes harder than I thought it would, it's not entirely bubblegum. Sort of proto-pop-punk and overall enjoyable. More nuance than I anticipated
Not the type of pop I like but damn, I was singing along with way too many of these songs...
This was good enough but the lyrics were needlessly dirty, not something that I'd seek out as lyrically valuable
So rich and multi-layered, experimental over a traditional song structure and it works as both separate and a whole. Really a departure from the Beck I'm familiar with.
Solid album with lots of hits, just iconic and generation-defining. Sometimes it drags a little bit but that's just Michael Stipe being Michael Stipe.
A good fusion of rap & jazz, the lyrics were good but could get heavy-handed and too preachy at times. The beats were great though
Overall enjoyable, Sabotage is still a fantastic track. Enjoyed the extended grooves in between songs
Really enjoyed the sampling & instrumentation but I've never been a fan of yapping in between songs. He's got a good flow and I'd listen to him again but I'm not sure I'd add anything to my playlist
Just a tiny tiny bit before my time so it hits that 90s nostalgia spot but not quite. It's tolerable, radio-friendly modern rock, nothing wrong with it but nothing right either. The 3'est 3 I can give.
Solid throughout, occasionally thought "this is cliche" but then realized they probably created the cliche... Liked how the songs flowed into each other. Really dug Stray Cat Blues and Factory Girl and of course Sympathy is an all time banger
Kind of surprised there was a cheesy ballad on here lol Definitely showed their versatility on this album though but didn't quite resonate with me as much as the debut album did
She's so authentic that even when the lyrics veer towards preachy it's still good...addressing issues before they became trendy and (unfortunately) they're still relevant today. Fast Car is an all time classic of course, but For My Lover is a standout track too
I don't know if I'd listen to these guys over the White Stripes if I want this kind of sound idk. I liked the energy but otherwise everything was just adequate.
God help me, I think I need to turn in my progressive card because I legitimately enjoyed the hell out of this. Really loved the composition but found some of the lyrics a bit cringe. I understand now why they called him the GOAT, too bad he had to throw it all away
I guess it's good if you're really into ska. I'm not. It was okay enough and some of the music was interesting but didn't really rock my world.
It's hard to feel sad when you're listening to something so damn funky. Wish this had September on it though Shining Star is good too. I wouldn't listen to this all the time though or it would lose that cheering you up magic
A delightful jam that was obviously a huge influence on other musicians, enjoyed the solid solos
We disagreed on this one, he liked the instrumentals better than the vocals but I'm a much bigger country fan than he is. Splitting our votes (me 4, him 2)
Pretty chill vibes, enjoyable enough, but I wanted some lyrics
Dragged on way too long, the general vibes were good though.
This was fun and nostalgic and energetic but idk if it's really groundbreaking enough to warrant inclusion on this list
one of the top classic rock bands, but I don't listen to albums for solos idk
Really listenable, embodied its time and full of classics. As an aside, I really appreciate the artistic choice to chase one of the most iconic love songs of the 80s with the ode to jilling off.
