Lots of punk records from the UK in the 70s and 80s have the snappiest and most anxious playing style. Like the Buzzcocks but a little looser, or Gang of Four if they didn't take themselves as seriously
I wish I were in a turtle neck with horn rimmed glasses absolutely boring the shit out of a girl at a party about this record, thats what I envision when I listen to Jazz Samba. I mean that in the best way possible, this record really brought me to a place (fictional or no) that I could see myself in. Sipping an old fashioned like the pretentious little boy I am in my heart, going on about a happening new scene down in Brazil.
So much of this record just feels like it informed a lot of what would come out in the mid to late 60s, reading up on it definitely gave better insight in to what this album helps accomplish. I love me some cultural and/or historical context when I listen to music, and knowing that this helped bring about Bossa Nova becoming popularized in the States really makes it that much more interesting. Never listened to it before, may go out and buy a vinyl copy to bore my fiancé with my thoughts while I cook dinner (the record she'll enjoy, me she prolly wont)
It's fun, it's from the early 2000s, it's conscious. Lots of beats that sound like bumpers for old [adult swim] breaks, which I'm absolutely a sucker for. Lots of rhyme heavy bars tho which sound dated, like really dated. Feels like some rhymes exist because they needed to fit as many as they could within a lyric. I don't hate that necessarily, I love me some DOOM, but where DOOM has personality and gets clever with his wordplay, Jurrasic 5 seem to be much more straightforward with their writing and it feels corny. I could put this on in the background with my buddies and it would sound real nice, but I don't think that was intent behind the album.
I wish I could've seen this woman live, the absolute voice on her is so goddamn good. She's funny, the songs are very groovy, the production is tight, it's just a great record full of emotion and personality. God bless her, wish we could've gotten more.
The only thing that prevents me from enjoying this album as it should is the fact that I heard this record every single weekend front to back my entire childhood. It's great, sure, but I'm sick to death of it. Is that fair? I don't care, life ain't fair buddy whatareyagonnado I'm sure they'll be okay
It's fine, it's nice for 50s rock n roll. It's classic, it's singles heavy, it is what it is
They make being such a slacker look easy. But for real, there's a reason Pavement are as beloved as they are. For a band that sounds so damn laid back, they have a sound that they dig every fun idea out of, up to and including a jazz number in 5/4. Makes me miss playing in a band with my buddies, and seeing my friends at shifty local dives. Might get back into that now that I've given this a proper listen
This is an album that needs repeated listens for me because I KNOW for a fact that there's so much to dig out but I can't do it yet. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because I know it's not bad, in fact it's been highly lauded, and I absolutely ADORE Albinos production on this, but it hasn't clicked for me. Maybe one day it will. Mad respect to PJ Harvey tho, ill keep trying I swear
One of the greatest ever made. Put on Search and Destroy and tell me it don't feel like a bat to the dome, Ill call you a goddamned liar.
It's Foo Fighters, its aight. Maybe back in the day it was way cooler but it doesn't really do much anymore, some songs sound like they had some big Elliot Smith influences which is kinda fun.
It's about as meh as you can get with an old rock and roll record. The album cover is about the most exciting part of this whole thing. Maybe it could sound fun in the background of someone's uncle's pool party, where he's grilling out and after a few beers gets a bit too weepy listening to Beth again and reminiscing about a long lost love (the one that got away [she gave him his first hand job in the back seat of his mom's station wagon]). Most other glam blows this shit out of the water. Detroit Rock City is a dope song tho, I'd put that on.
I'm not gonna trash it because it's Coldplay. I gave it an honest listen, and enjoyed it more than I expected. It's still Coldplay tho, but slightly above expectations. Slightly. Dude loves singing in his falsetto
The sound is dated, but some of these songs still hit man. Issues that they talk about here are still problems today. Behind the Wall is harrowing, Fast Car still slaps, some songs sound like 90s hacky-sack hippy music but none of the ideas are wrong.
Not gonna lie I went into this thinking it would be cheesy but holy shit man this thing rips. Each song stands out amongst the others, some pick up right where the previous one left off, every one full of ideas. The guitar solos rip, Freddy obviously sings like the legend he is, it's ornate and layered beyond hell but feels lean. The only disappointment I have is that I wrote it off way to early, this would be been on rotation if I wasn't such an idiot.
