The Birthday PartyThat was truly a once in a lifetime experience... I guarantee it.
That was truly a once in a lifetime experience... I guarantee it.
A host of familiar favourites flanked by sturdy and harmonious songs. This album is a pleasant and not-too-adventurous demonstration of strong musicianship. Doesn't really leave me wanting more but satisfied with the listening experience.
Already five stars... Don't even need to listen (but if course I will)
It is cool. I don't know much about jazz or jazz history but Miles Davis is infamous in music. The music is quite pleasing and nostalgically reminiscent of a bygone era. I imagine walking into a late night, smoky, dimly-lit den and sitting down not just to hear this, but to listen to it. Back when music was live and people danced.
I don't know what it is that other people hear in this music that I'm not hearing. To each their own I suppose.
Oh, wonderful pick for today. I adore Who's Next but have never listened to this one all the way through. Ready, Set, Go!... Alright, definitely hearing something of a bridge from the old rock n' roll sound of the 50s to that of the 60s. Very catchy and "simple" sounding songs but driven by innovative players and creative songwriting. Not my favourite music, per se, but certainly among the albums I've needed to hear. Good listen.
Okay, admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of Lou Reed prior to this, but I also don't know much about him and his music. I'm more than willing to dive deeper here on a band I don't know much about but seems to have had a massive influence on artists I love. First listen, I love the early melodies! The opening tune Sunny Morning very reminiscent and foreshadowy of the hit to come, Femme Fatale. Having previously heard the REM cover of this song, and the later song on the album, There She Goes Again, it feels important to circle the square and listen to the originals. Certainly makes me want to revisit Dead Letter Office and relisten after this. Later night listen, this truly is one of the top 10 albums of all time. Had a great talk with a friend about this. Listened again tonight. It's astounding. Indescribable. Listened to the album in entirety about 15 times this weekend. What a discovery for me, my first big one through this project. Very thankful.
I know this one. I used to have almost all the Led Zeppelin CDs in heavy rotation. Looking forward to listening again tonight in earnest. It might be their best album.
It's blues. Done well.
Some see the Rolling Stones as the greatest rock band of all time. Anybody not in that bucket can't help but feel like they're the most overrated rock band of all time. I can't help but find myself in the latter group.
I've never understood Duran Duran. Their music to me is unadveturous, unexciting, and rather bland. Given so many better options from the same musical era and genre, I've always taken a pass on Duran Duran. This album changes nothing for me. I give Rio three stars because it doesn't completely suck and because the blended mix of drums, bass, guitar, and synth is actually pretty good.
I don't usually dive much deeper than his hits, but Bruce is Bruce... They call him The Boss for a reason. Every album of his is probably worth a listen cover to cover.
As a Canadian, I really want to try and like Leonard Cohen... But I just can't. His book Beautiful Losers was the reason I ended up dropping Canadian Literature way back in university. This album wasn't enough to do the same for this album project, but it's also not enough to win me over. I don't know what people see in him... Hard pass for me, but enjoy.
Not my usual go to music but not bad. Definitely recognized a couple songs (Someday, Last Nite). The music throughout is tight... Good chops from each player and noticeable synergy between them. Decent pipes on the lead singer. Overall an enjoyable listen on a morning drive, but the guitar melodies in each tune sound a bit repetitive and the songs struggle to stand out, creatively, which brings this into 3-star "average" territory for me.
Feels like an album where the parts are more than their sum. Seemingly incongruent songs lacking any kind of theme or thread, but as standalone songs most of them are B+ to A+. The Beatles certainly experimenting with every kind of sound imaginable here: strings, horns, sitar and other eastern instruments, their standard crunchy guitar, not to mention the cacophony of sound effects in Yellow Submarine (an outrageously silly yet fun song). Every tune is a toetapper. Great but not perfect - Four stars.
Sade is amazing. This album was in medium-to-heavy rotation for me years ago when I lived abroad. Sade's By Your Side (from the Lovers Rock album) was my wedding song--a marriage that has since dissolved, but nevertheless the song and artist are special. I had the opportunity to see her live about 15 years ago and it did not disappoint. The most timeless and listenable of music.
Pretty good. Not a lot of standouts for me, with the obvious exceptions of Last Goodbye and his stunning rendition of Hallelujah, which are both enough to pull this album up overall.
What an incredible collection of songs. This was a complete hidden gem for me. Enjoyed this a lot and will be listening again. Great album.
