Good Old Boys
Randy Newman
well i was NOT prepared for ALL THE N-WORDS jesus christ randy! and right out of the gate that was a bold choice!
but yeah this was just not a fun listen. it kept reminding me of jack black's character from 'the holiday' when he was like "scrinky dootly doo" and "scrankly dada n da"

The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady
Charles Mingus
okay this was so intricate and savory and swanky!
i'm generally too dumb to fully appreciate jazz but i can tell when i'm hearing something this well -crafted. i am not one to put jazz on at home but LOVE a jazz lounge in person. i would play this in a jazz lounge (live of course) with an expensive whiskey on the rocks.

Dire Straits
Dire Straits
overwhelmingly solid album!
plucky guitars, i loved the drums, the whole energy of it was fantastic!
i would play this album during a montage of a road trip with an old friend. we've grown apart over the years and maybe we wouldn't even have chosen to do this together but there was a shenanigan at the airport we ran into each other at and got half-forced to share a rental car. he's travelling for work, needs to meet with an Important Client to Close The Deal, otherwise his company might go under. i'm getting out of town in a hurry because i did some things i'm not too proud of Back Home and need to lay low for a while. nothing too bad, but enough to drive the plot of this excursion. i'm a good person. we pass the miles through the desert sometimes talking, sometimes just reconnecting through silence, a bond that will find itself stronger than ever by the time we get to That Small City in dusty new mexico where we finally part ways.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Raekwon
intro was unintentionally hilarious
fun use of sOuNd eFfEcTs
a full album is a bit too much of this at once but one or two tracks mixed into a playlist would be alright
gets repetitive and a bit boring after a while
still respect this so much more than today's mumble rap, at least these guys had actual things to say and undeniable flow/lyricism (still skipped a lot of it though)
the singer on "rainy dayz" couldn't find the key with a locksmith
obviously i would bump this in my low rider outside the 7eleven while me and my boiz holla at the fine young honeys walking by while we smokin a ounce

Joni Mitchell
oh boy - the original taylor swift i suppose. very talented and some nice guitar strumming but not for me. awfully horny for her mean old daddy and wants to shampoo him? the more lyrics i heard the more questions i had. kissing sunset pigs? putting the flaps UP before landing, are we ASKING for a runway excursion? and why did she buy that frying pan if it's so fucking big?
i feel like someone one time must have told her she had a nice falsetto and i really wish they hadn't. eeeeshk. maybe they were being nice. warbly would be the word i'd have used.
i suppose i might play this again if i ever find myself a feeble old widow wasting away, isolated in the woods with my collection of tiny spoons and a handful of malnourished indoor/outdoor cats that stink. with doilies draped over every flat surface, i sit for hours casting wistful looks of passivity out the dirt-stricken window of my shack, sipping an incredibly bland and tepid weak herbal tea as i long for that mean old daddy husband man i lost thirty years ago to the slowest, saddest cancer you've ever heard of.

life is too short to let music be this boring
yikes
the kind of late 70s jam-band adjacent sound that makes me want to throw myself down the stairs just to feel something again

oh man I am in LOVE with this one! takes me back to my 90s post-grungy roots! i've heard a handful of these songs before just wasn't aware of what artist they were from. i would listen to this any time! susan's house was a personal favorite and i will be making sure my friend susan is aware that it exists

The Clash
Wow, what a great song they've recorded 14 times in a row! Fully enjoy the punk sound but they did not need to make so many songs with that same beat. Could have been a 4 or 5 track EP and I would have been content.
I would play this album during one of my many montages of me hustling to work in the Big City, a restless corporate shill running late spilling my coffee, but sliding in to the Big Meeting juuuust in time with a few wrinkles in my white pressed shirt!

The Undertones
The Undertones
okay, first five tracks had me ready to GIVE UP... mindless "PuNk" music... but something magical happened when i got to "teenage kicks". it actually had musicality, there were harmonies, the instruments had purpose, and it even had nods to 50s/60s do-wop kind of music, which i thought was really fun! the rest of the album was so much better - it's almost like they made a great album but at the last minute were told it needed to be "more PuNk" by the label so they churned out some drivelous punk tracks and slapped them on the front end. i actually "liked" several tracks from the second half of the album on my spotify and look forward to them cycling into my mixes!
i would play this album when a group of teenagers is going out for a night on the town. for the most part they're a good group of kids, but one or two of them are into the darker scene, maybe looking to stir up some trouble later in the evening (get in a FIGHT?! buy DRUGS?! SHOPLIFT??!)... but for now they're heading out into the city with their fake id's to have a good time and let off some steam!

Chore of Enchantment
Giant Sand
what a ride! looooved the playful use of different instruments on each track - they almost felt like featured artists! the flutes, piano, guitar, OBOE, and i feel like that band would be amazing to see live! absolutely enjoyed the music
but then, the singing. i mean, you can't really even call it singing. more like whisper talking. as if the guy was recording the vocals next to a sleeping crocodile he mustn't wake. and the lyrics themselves. i could almost SEE him reading every line in the rhyming dictionary and deciding to use them ALL. i mean shiver, river, deliver, we GET IT.
while i did not hate the whisper talking entirely, it should have been on maybe three different tracks MAX. too much of it. hilarious really. get a singer.
however TEMPTATION OF EGG. IS. THAT. GIRL.
LOVED her.
also really liked the bonus track HARD ON THINGS. especially when he whispered "let me show you how hard i am on things".... and then continued to whisper into the bridge/breakdown.

Live Through This
Hole
this was a surprisingly solid album and i'm really glad i listened to it! i knew the radio hits from HOLE before but had never dove into a full album. doven? dived? doved? why do none of those feel right?
anyway, i had mostly just thought of courtney love as kurt cobain's crazy trashy druggie girlfriend... and i still do but now i know that she also very skillfully pulls her own weight as a grunge singer and songwriter. i really enjoyed the lyrics and appreciate that she wasn't afraid to get into some pretty dark themes. standout tracks for me were "jennifer's body" (which was the inspiration for the name of the film!) and "rock star".
i would play this album while fighting the patriarchy! or finally standing up to the bully on the school bus that's been stealing my snacks and lunch money all year. that's MY fruit by the foot ROGER and today's the day I'M gonna eat it NOT YOU DO YOU HEAR ME!? I'VE HAD ENOUGH!!

Steve McQueen
Prefab Sprout
i'm proper GIDDY about this album and i can't even find the words for how this lights up my heart and soul! but i'll try...
firstly, how have i NEVER heard of this band before? it is EVERYTHING 80s music should be but somehow even more, as if a modern-day artist set out to make a nostalgic album that spanned multiple decades and genres.
i'm getting wham!/george michael, culture club, tears for fears, the cars, devo, billy joel, david bowie, billy idol, with elements of funk, soul, jazz, 90s, lounge, even twangs of old western/country all at once - it's so effortless but precise with the layers, instruments, harmonies, just incredible!
"faron young" is a fun and bouncy opener, nodding equally to cowboy country and billy idol rockabilly pop with a lighthearted delivery but still having substance. "bonny" is a personal favorite, the melodies and harmonies are so eerie and full of yearning, just quintessential 80s. "horsin' around" is fucking incredible, what a genius blend of 80s pop/rock with jazz and the lyrics told a real story - it made me feel like i was hearing this live in a cool jazz lounge. "desire as" is so brooding, the lyric "i've got six things on my mind. you're no longer one of them" is so gut-wrenching in its dismissive simplicity.
and that ALBUM COVER!? it goes SO FUCKING HARD!?! actually LIVID that i haven't been listening to this for the last 30+ years - WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE?!
i've been waiting and wondering what my first 5 star review would be because i've been so stingy until now but i couldn't be more thrilled to give it to this masterpiece! and really excited it's something i didn't know before, since that's what this is all about!
i would play this album ANY TIME! maybe perfect for an evening spent casually chatting with some close friends and/or loved ones, sipping a really nice cocktail or glass of your favorite spirit in a dark, mellow bar hidden away under a busy city street and maybe it's raining outside. and i'm wearing a broken-in, faded soft leather jacket (or maybe denim). yeah
///post-note///
i wrote my review and rating WITHOUT hearing the acoustic tracks since they were not part of the original recording but are you FUCKING KIDDING ME - SOOOO GOOD! the re-interpretations of the stylings and use of different instruments like the harmonica are incredible. the lyrics and his delivery hit SO HARD on the acoustic tracks! that extended intro to "desire as - acoustic"?! guys i'm in love sorry i'll shut up now

Fela Kuti
i was very intrigued to hear the father of afrobeats! i was not sure if i would like it once i got into the first track, but if you put it on as background music
it's actually really fun
i would play this to set up the scene in an old vigilante cop movie while shots of the city flashed on screen, giving the audience a feel for the energy and tension to come

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
WOW! from the moment this began, i knew i was in for a treat! what a powerhouse of an album! front to back, no skips, so chaotic and loud and fun but also extremely talented people! well written, the lyrics were so provocative but exciting, and almost a queen-like flair for giving single songs multiple sections to explore!
and the DRAMA of it all! it was like a rocky horror picture show type musical and the lead singer had so many CHARACTERS to help him deliver the message that really elevated the experience for me.
i was hearing little richard meets big band meets bob seger meets queen meets gospel meets rocky horror meets the darkness, and interestingly enough this came BEFORE a lot of the things i was hearing, meaning THIS was probably inspiration for ALL THE OTHER ONES! never knew i needed an "old time rock n roll" for orgies but here we are!
the intro to "the faith healer" was incredible i loved how it grew and changed and the let it breathe before he started singing - they really made sure the music was as interesting as the singer, which seems hard to do with a guy like that in front!

Ice Cube
man i LOVE ice cube! one of my fave 90s rappers - had real shit to say and was a real champion for his people in both culture and politics. "it was a good day is bound to guarantee exactly that.
as a full album i'm struggling with what to give it. it's good but a bit long and some tracks sound pretty much the same. also i wish "you can do it put your back into it" were on here i would have added a star just for that song i love it so much!
i would play this while gang banging around california and you can interpret that however you wish homie
