I enjoy the vocal performance in the opening track, slightly unusual and original way of doing his vocal inflections. Fits his voice very well.
Wild World- great single from the album. Was the only track that I had heard previously.
Sad Lisa- a Nice change of pace after the more energetic Wild World. Maybe it drags on for a bit too long?
The next part of songs kind of floats into eachother in my opinion. Not saying theyre bad but kind of forgettable.
Longer boats kind of has an oldschool- folk song (turn of the century?), with the repetitive chorus.
father and son probably the best track of the second half of the album. Beautiful.
All in all its a decent album, with a couple highlights.
3/5
opening track : First connection I made was to John Frusciante’s ”before the beginning” which im familiar with.
Apparently his track is a kind of tribute and heavily inspired by this.
Really enjoy the musical journey/ trip the song puts the listener through.
How had I not heard this before??
can you get to that: Had heard it at least once before, its a more traditional funk tune with some great vocals
hit and quit: the song has more of a rock feeling to it, with the strong and catchy guitar riffs
-
so far really impressed, the album is a fusion of many different styles
-
you and your folks: not as memorable as the previous tracks but kind of a natural continuation.
super stupid: makes me think of other rock tracks of the early 70’s - think thin lizzy and hendrix. The hendrix influence is quite easy to see id say.
back in our minds: kind of an interlude to the next song .
Armageddon: The finale that lives up to its name, war of wars. Its a never ending jam session with everything from animal noises to bombs going off in the foreground.
All in all, a creative album with a mix of styles that i really enjoyed listening through.
5/5
One step closer: earlier Nu metal vibes a la KoRn, i dont mind it actually.
points of authority: cheesy lyrics and rhymes- chorus kind of reminds me of Disturbed? instrumentals not really grabbing my attention either.
crawling: Had heard this one before, the chorus is pretty memorable at least.
I feel like the songs keep using the same kind of recipe, similar themed lyrics, the vocal performances, guitar riffs etc, there is nothing new as the album progresses
in the end: the second track i recognized from the album. overplayed of course, but it has its charm.
a place for my head: finally we get a vibe switch from the previous songs. more aggressive rap-metal
forgotten: forgot it already
cure for the itch: instrumental track full of breakbeats and scratching. beastie boys meets deltron and moby- like synths in the back. Also one of the highlights for me
album closer a bit of a lowlight, in one ear out the other
3/5 - A pretty mediocre album without any offensively bad tracks. Dont see myself returning to it.
pt 1-5: My only experience of pink floyd before this are some of the popular singles from the band. This track shows another part that i wasnt familiar with.
machine: enjoy the vocals and the synth parts, has a modern feel to it 50 years later.
All in all the album was a positive experience, could really feel the cultural impact it had on many future releases that ive listened to.
4/5
Some of the tracks on the album were catchy, but it gets outweighed by the repetitiveness that unfortunately makes it stale quick. After only listening to the first song, we know how the rest of the album will sound.
3/5
Ive heard a bit of Nightmares on Wax before (carboot soul, etc). I pretty much got what I expected with this album.
Groovy instrumentals are plenty, and there are no bad tracks that stand out to me. However, it lacks that x-factor that separates a great album from a good one. 3/5
3/5
Was not familiar with the artist/ band before. Some decent new-wave from the early eighties. Nothing that really impressed me
Was familiar with money for nothing and walk of life previously. Had some other easy to listen to soft rock tracks that I didnt mind, especially one with some nice saxophone parts. Id give it a 4/5
Had heard some of the beach boys hit singles before (none from this album)
Highlights for me would be Feel Flows, particularly the added layers with flutes and saxophone, as well as day in the life of tree, could feel some sufjan stevens vibes from that one, depressing and somber but really beautiful.
Long promised road feels more modern than 71' as well, the way they structured it made it quite catchy.
Lowlights: Disney girls, felt a bit like a lullaby and snoozefest. Was not really needed in the album. Title song/ closer was also not up my alley.
Sabotage is the only one i had heard from the album before reviewing..
Sure shot : The sample definitely carried the song throughout, but its not a bad hip hop track - After which we switch up to more of a punk rock / hardcore vibe; decent but not too memorable.
Root down: Funky track with nice instrumentals, the vocals dont really do it for me though, a bit too repetitive for me.
Get it together, great hip-hop track, nice lyricism.
Overall I liked the hip hop and instrumental parts better than the punk-y tracks.
4/5
Catchy and interesting lyrics throughout the album combined with some beautiful vocals. I do think its a good thing it was a pretty short tracklist though, as a longer one wouldve felt a bit "too much" of the same. I'd give it a 4, pretty likely to return to it in the future.
4/5
Had heard the singles before, some iconic songs on this LP. Really its lauryn hill and her vocals that stand out on my top tracks, (ready or not, killing me softly with his song)
Other tracks have some meaningful lyrics and good rhymes, but lack on other areas like interesting instrumentals like zealot, the beast. The score and cowboys brings some good rap into it.
I'd like to have more of the Dub and reggae influence shine through, some more style switchups or similar for me to give it a 5/5. Also a bit too cover-heavy.
4/5
A short and sweet country album. Nothing too special, wasnt blown away by the lyrics or vocal performances. Found the instrumentals uninteresting.
