Love this record, first real pop/electronic record I really enjoyed as a kid. Still holds up, trippy fun and catchy. MGMT rules.
I will preface by saying I worked in retail where the hit from this record played frequently and often. Was slightly dreading this listen, not because the songs are bad, but simply because the times I had while some of these tracks were playing were. Overall a pretty nice listen, the fretless bass was a pleasant surprise. This record is also a master class in 90s production maximalist and full. Harmonica and layered unique vocals with a small pinch of experimentation. I don’t see myself coming back to this release however if it plays in my presence I won’t be upset. Might even tap a toe or two.
The first radio head record I ever listened to. Love it
Robert Smith loves kissing and things kissing. I like the atmosphere of this release brooding and with a lot of cool synth textures. Unfortunately it’s a little boring, nothing really stood out to me on this record. Maybe some October day I’ll throw it on and it’ll click more. I enjoyed the tracks ‘A Strange Day’ and ‘The Figurehead’. Back to back tracks on the album that called for my attention the most, however the final track was the most interesting wish they had done more experimental tracks like ‘Pornography’ on the whole record
There are some absolute all timers on this album, some cool groundbreaking tracks on this record but if it was 17 songs shorter it would be one of my favorite beatle albums.
Good album. Been a favorite for a minute. This monkey is going to heaven.
Never listened to Leonard Cohen before this, did not know what to expect. But man I gotta say ‘Songs From A Room’ is terrific. Sure he’s not the most talented ‘musician’ in the world but as a songwriter and overall performer he is spectacular. There is so much honesty and sincerity in his delivery as much is so when the songwriter sings their own song. The production is slightly odd with weird keys and mouth harp sprinkled throughout, which I love. I really liked this record and the first one off this list I’m going to hunt down and pick up at a record store!
Electric jug. Roky Erickson is goat.
An energetic electronic album that keeps a great atmosphere. At times it feels like it's flossing the mind and then sends you into a grooving night club. Walk Now... is an easy favorite from this record, easing in and out of chaos retaining a steady driving beat and bass line. 1hr + but felt like it just flew by, great listen!
Pretty nice psych folky rock album, has a LOVE quality to it. Love the string/accordion parts paired with 12 string it sounds magical, then they hit you with the chimes we are absolutely in a magic hollow.
A few great tracks on here but some snoozers. Love the blend of styles while still holding on to the early beck sound. It was One Foot In The Grave washed in 90s pop, with pinches of psych, electronic and hip hop. Not my favorite beck record but not a bad one!
Very nice rhythm section, I understand why it got heavily sampled! Didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Was jamming in the record shop and sold a copy. Gotta revisit this one not usually what I listen to, but it was good!
3.5/5 if it was shorter it would be at least a 4. Love this record has some all time SP songs, just needs to be trimmed down.
