This was not for me. I have never been a NY fan. I am still not ever going to be a NY fan.
I was seventeen when Tidal was released - prime for Apple's mix of anger and Broadway inspired piano lines but this album passed me by, unlike Alanis' Jagged Little Pill, which was released the year before which remains a big part of my teenage listening oeuvre.
To sit with this album today has been just wonderful. The lyrics combined with Apple's voice and musical intensity have made this a new staple in my listening 'pile'. As I get older I am drawn more and more to female artists and whilst always familiar Fiona Apple, the connection was peripheral - I'm glad to have had this land on my listening mat today!
This album is packed with the usual bombastic Zeppelin sound. Indicative of the fully ignited, richness of mid 70s studio hedonism. The money and the drugs run freely in this recording, but its Led Zep in some of their most creative and inspired moments. Granted, it's not all perfect - Black Country Woman seems anachronistic for it's name sake - apparently included as filler for the double album, it can't hold a candle to the inspired, driving, non-western influences present on Kashmir.
I've never understood the draw of U2 and for that reason this was a first time listen for me.
Whilst I appreciate that they speak to a good many people musically and politically, this one won't be re-appearing on my listening list again.

This album - whilst seminal for many, lacks the capacity to capture my attention.
