First time ever really listening to the Beastie Boys. More range than I had previously thought from the snatches I'd heard in the past. they seem to be legitimate appreciators of both punk & rap-- the best thing about them is that they are fun. I like the silly hedonism. Their loops are pretty awesome, and some of their purely instrumental stuff is nearly beautiful. I wasn't even alive in the 90s, but can tell it was a time when genre-bending was still very interesting and earnestly approached. This seems like an apex of that idea. There's certainly times when this is a mood I want to be in, and will put these guys on to achieve it.
Reminds me of so many people, and my conception of them as a punk band a la the Ramones was pretty far off. I think I was getting it mixed up with a venue called the Stone Pony?? I hear so much in here-- the Sundays, the Flamin Groovies, the Replacements. I really like them, my idea of their music was so wrong. Definitely in the realm of music I really enjoy. Adjacent to the 24 hr party people film soundtrack maybe?
So darn clean. They are excellent musicians and I appreciate that style of pop music that is nearly scientific in the way it gets in your ear. I am more familiar with their album Life, but I really enjoyed this. They have such a rich, symphonic sound that is really attractive. Lovefool is truly one of the best songs of last century.
Radiohead. Radio head. I didn't know much of them growing up besides when my brother would play the song Creep on Guitar Hero when I was a kid. I didn't pay any attention to them until a poetry professor in college mentioned them. After I realized I knew nothing, I began to listen to them beginning with their first album until I got through them all. I kept returning to The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, and King of Limbs. Also became super obsessed with the off shoot The Smile and legitimately think A Light for Attracting Attention is one of the best albums of this decade. That said, I never returned much to Hail to the Thief even though it is very good. For some reason it feels like a "Radiohead album" but I think what attracts me to the others is how much it feels like an evolution or devolution or some kind of comment on the form they themselves crafted. This feels like a straightforward version of their sound. And that sound is epic, its almost more impressive that they can be so of themselves, and yet the album doesn't stick so much in my head. Perhaps for that very reason. Literally who am I to say it, but it isn't my favorite Radiohead album, and likely will never be.
REM remains one of the few things to come from GA that I genuinely like. Although this is not my fav album of theirs-- i tend to prefer their earlier stuff. Nightswimming is actually poetry. Put on on a drive home after work. Goodbye Atlanta
Now, I'm 25, but I get a feeling like a parent on this one. Like, the same impulse to be like, "don't get a tattoo, please don't get that nose ring, can you buy jeans without rips, please don't die your hair black. You look so nice in that shirt I bought you, please wear it." It's like I had a really nice kid that started getting dark and I'm trying to be understanding but it's really difficult and I'm a little concerned. The song "One" really brought this out of me. It is so clear that they are insanely talented but I struggle to understand just why they want to sound like that so unrelentingly, and for so long. It's perplexing and I'm probably wrong for asking them to sound more like something palatable to me. I can see how influential this is, I can see it, and yet I cannot enjoy it. I feel like art should not be so overtly negative and angry, that some levity is required, some mind toward hope, some range of human feeling. The lyricism is not grating because it sounds like that, but rather because it feels so immature in its sweeping condemnation of everything. Again my kid feels like they are performing 'anger' and I'm wondering if he should see a counselor. That said, their arrangements are impressive. I think you need to be moving to enjoy this, reserve for workouts, driving fast, and angry subway rides. In a crowd of other angry people, I can see it. But just sitting with a mind toward listening, its a bit difficult to stomach all together.
Recall this being on my older brother's ipod. That alone made it cool in my eyes. I was excited to revisit it, but have to say the hits from this album remain the highlights and the hidden gems I was hoping to discover were not exactly there. Feels very of a time and a place to me. Boulevard of Broken Dreams and WMUWSE are the best two songs, and I wish they went into that mode more often. But good, definitely solid.
I think I want to like Elvis Costello more than I actually do. I'm drawn to his lyricism, tone, occasionally his sound-- and yet. Some songs here are genuinely good. I liked Kinder Murder, . Really like the title. I think I just need to listen more, not less. An acquired taste that I think a younger woman from southern California needs to have a lot of exposure to to connect with. I want to like him.
I have always loved the Police. Synchronicity II was often played on car rides to school with my mom. They rock, and I'm glad to add a couple songs to my likes. King of Pain, Murder by Numbers were two I had over looked. Every Breath You Take is truly one of the best ever. Seeing hints of Sting's solo stuff, I like the general worldliness. Every song was a play except Mother... Great band.
Yeahhh. Tried to get into this in highschool, above me then. Ended up obsessed with incinerate off rather ripped but never came back. Really enjoy the opening track, find myself tuning out at moments even though it's noisy!! I am unclear what environment this is for, i don't dislike it, but it's not catching for me. Again, first song rocks
i like music like this and this was the album recommended on my birthday and it makes me happi
I enjoy this style of music greatly and its fuun and experimental
tend to put these on on my morning commute. couldn't quite do it. asked a coworker, she knows them as a bar band. i think that felt right.
I really enjoy Cocteau Twins, this was an album I tended to look past in their discography. The song Lorelai was the only one I knew well. I enjoy the whole thing they'd got going on. Sort of baroque and multiplicitous layers. I like it. Very whimsical, fairy-like. Fairies at dusk so to speak. Cool band. Appreciate the deeper listen.
It's really pretty and calming. His voice is so delightful. I remember finding this album in high school, it speaks to a quiet longing we all have inside. One of my favorite albums is a collection of Visee's guitar works. This reminds me of it for many reasons. Feels like I'm at court, serenaded by a fountain. A melancholy musician strumming, fall of empire.
I really do enjoy the sonic world the fugees build. It's rich and intricate. I enjoy all their voices and the knack they have for grabbing sounds from so many different places and bringing them together. I'm not sure how deeply I can connect with it on a personal level. These people are lucidly describing the world they live in, but I tire sometimes. They are very clever lyricists, have excellent poetic meter and rhythm. Lauryn has such a rich voice. And yet...
I genuinely enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I know Highway Star from Guitar Hero and I remember Smoke on the Water playing on the classic rock station. I had no idea they were considered prog-rock and heavy metal pioneers. There are some good songs on here, and there are some great songs on here. I played this on my way home from work and it made even an awful commute exciting. It isn'y my particular taste, but its pleasant and alive. nice.
It's pleasant tunes. Didn't stand out tremendously for me, but very pleasant
I listened while doing yoga, thats a good pair. I work in a wine shop, great shop music. I'm not so outraged at this being included. If we are thinking about canon in the music world perhaps this does not measure up to greatest of all time, but I think it does exist as a proper example of a genre and time. And its a good album, a good representative album..
This album is really pleasant, I like it.
just cant
I've always enjoyed this band. It really appealed to me in a twee middle school era. It's a good album. That song do you realize is grating tho.
This album is so great!
I've fallen so far behind, so in one day at work I will attempt my catch up. I've been a fan of ZZ Top since hearing them on classic rewind radio with my mom.
Really cool. Had on in the shop I work at and thought about a lot of things while it played. The passing of time, the transition to modernity, the replacement of classical music. Seminal
Really a favorite album of mine, even when I was younger. America is an amazing song.
So fun. Currently living in Atlanta so proximity to the source. I'm having fun
Palateable Sonic Youth Album. Quietly it could even be played in the shop.
Damn it its good. Punk without complete descending into chaos
Lovely, poetry, will play for my child.
