What a beautiful tribute to Woody. A veritable whos-who of 90s folk/indie rock stars…Natalie Merchant, hello! Such an incredible gift from Woodys daughter to ask these artists to bring his words to life.

Definitely a nighttime album. Listened at 9 PM while biking around suburban Minnesota in 80 degree weather, probably the exact environment the band imagined people playing this album in. First five songs are instant classics. Love the horn sounds in Believe Me Natalie.
The first full Laura Nyro album I’ve heard. Clearly an impressive talent…but I found a lot of the songs repetitive. Even wondering sometimes what it would sound like if her frequent collaborators the 5th Dimension took on the same songs. Overall I think I’d prefer to listen to her contemporary Judee Sill. Album standouts: Sweet Blindness, Elis Coming, Timer, Stoned Soul Picnic, Emmie and Woman’s Blues. Loved the lyrics on Lonely Women, would be interested in hearing another artist’s interpretation.
This is the only time you’ll catch me listening to Rod Stewart. The songs I prefer are the ones he’s not doing vocals. Still a great band and some jams for sure.
Influenced by jazz much? Delightful listen. Of course the classic “My Old School” is still my favorite track.

When I pressed play on this a giant key appeared and unlocked my brain. This album has everything that I love in music! Wonderful first listen that made me understand so many other artists I already know

Not for me. The saving grace of this album is the line “I got a dick for a brain/and my brain is gonna sell my ass to you.”

I have a deeper respect for Christina Aguilera after listening to this album! It was an audacious project. Of course I’m familiar with the singles from Back To Basic- Ain’t No Other Man, Candyman and Hurt. I loved opening the album with shouting out her inspirations. Music about love of music is the best!
What was in the early 2000s that singers were so open about singing about abuse? “Oh Mother” on this album, “Runaway Love” by Ludacris and Mary J Blige, “Girl” by Destinys Child and “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson. All those hits just in the years 2005 and 2006 alone! There’s an absolute dearth from popular music nowadays to sing about these universal and painful subjects.
Grateful to come up during this particular era of retro inspired pop. Back to Black released a few months later…to me that is a perfect album. Back to Basics gets lost in its ambition, especially on Disc 2. Overall respect to Christina but I don’t think it should have been a double album!

Glad to finally listen to this after seeing the album art on my timeline for so long. The father of “Lo Fi beats to study to”…this generation needs to respect the classics!
