1001 Albums Summary

This was dull. But palatable, and I’m sure there’ll be a significant proportion of these that I can’t say that for. Reading some reviews, I gather many people quite like Thom Yorke’s indecipherable vocals - as a certified lyrics girlie, this was not for me. I had every intention to sit and listen and actually found myself being lulled into quite a warm and dreamy nap. In my notes, I wrote: probably a good album to have on while working or doing something like wood carving. I’ve never done wood carving which probably says it all - but I imagine it’d be nice background noise to do something repetitive to. Not quite a cleaning album as it makes me want to sit too much. When I actually gave the lyrics a read, I thought they were good: Fake Plastic Trees’ verse about the plastic surgeon is witty, and I liked the few lyrics of My Iron Lung I heard properly (“Suck, suck your teenage thumb / Toilet trained and dumb”). But the production choices just meant I couldn't get into them and that's a shame for me personally. 3/5 - I see the vision, I see what they're doing - but it's just background noise to me.

This should be up my street and I spent the entire album trying to work out why it wasn’t. I didn’t land on a firm answer, I just didn’t feel moved by it - either rhythmically or lyrically. There were moments I enjoyed, moments where it felt like she twisted the knife or gave it a bit more bite, but overall it just washed over me.

Don’t know what i expected but this exceeded it, the first of these albums i’ve listened to that was actually infused with joy and a groove. I’m not sure I will actively listen again but this was a very enjoyable soundtrack to my Sunday

This was quite samey for me - I didn’t hate it but I also didn’t have any standout tracks. I think I might listen again if I was cooking, it strikes me as good cooking background music.

Wow I liked this so much more than I thought I would. It felt very nostalgic, I’m not sure my parents ever actually played it but it felt familiar and comforting. I also thought white rabbit was one of my least favourites off the album (though maybe that’s because I’ve heard it a lot before).

I wanted to like this more than I actually did I think. I definitely was on board with the experimental styles and I can see how, at the time, what Björk was doing was super unique. But it just isn’t for me and I don’t see myself reaching to listen to this album again

Felt like listening to an extended open mic set. Warm and pleasant, I won’t listen again but I’m not mad I listened

Enjoyed this so much more than I thought. Tbh I do like bossa nova so it’s not totally unexpected but just put me in a good mood

I don’t understand why this is the TS album that seems to make it onto these lists. I get that it probably has the highest concentration of her pop bangers but imo is not her best album. Didn’t realise quite how reverb soaked some of it is though, I do appreciate the dreamlike qualities and some of the songs (the less radio played ones) I do have a soft spot for

What a visionary. Did I love it all? No - found driving me backwards very grating and there was one other track that took me out of things (can’t remember which). But, on the whole, you gotta love the experimentalism. Would be a 3.5 if I could.

It's not for me. I remember listening to Cypress Hill at school and wanting to be cool like that, but I am not cool like that. Would be a 2.5 if I could.

So happy to hear this one. The first 6 tracks on this are unskippable; the weakest for me is sober II (the trap drums idk) - but the lyricism, the staying power, chef's kiss. I listened to a song exploder episode about Sober and the harmonies on 'liquor wet lime' stick out to me every single time now.

I just didn’t care for this

Took me a couple listens to get into it but I think I’m starting to get it. I’ve always been a bit confused on why people almost universally praise Bowie (but really wanted to understand). Suffragette City was the standout track for me but I do want to sit and listen properly to the lyrics at some point.

My primary school PE teacher used to put the prodigy on for our warmups and that was the one redeeming thing he did. It’s a bit repetitive for me in daily life but can’t deny it goes hard

I didn’t get through it all but I got through enough to give it 5*. This came on a day where I was already listening to a lot of hardcore anyway so fit perfectly. I don’t know why I’ve never given NIN a proper go before, but can hear the influence on almost any other band I listened to growing up
