Spy Vs. Spy: The Music Of Ornette Coleman

Well it took about 10 seconds of each song for me to physically become ill. That’s not a good sign.
These guys and gals are from Madison so I was prepared to be generous. But no. “Stupid Girl” seemed like it has some fun hooks, I guess, but the rest was pretty unlistenable.
Some good easy listening - kind of distracting how often they changed time signature in many songs, but it felt like a precursor to Guster, so I liked it similarly.
Wow, some solid sexism across the board here, but Stupid Girl is incredibly bad haha. I enjoyed Out of Time, which is the only song I really knew here, but I didn’t like the pop sound of this album as much as their harder rock songs.
I wouldn’t say I like this type of music very much, but I actually enjoyed some of the non-guitar riffs quite a bit. But the freestyle nature of the vocals just isn’t my thing.
Not a big fan of the vocals, which I remember as weird from Kevin destroying me in GH3 freshman year
I just get sick of his voice after like 40 seconds in each song... I guess he’s the greatest lyricist ever or something but he’s also the most nasally singer too then.
I’m not a huge fan of how long it takes every song to actually start and it seems like a very mood-specific album, but I enjoyed a few of them once they started playing.

I was ready to just give this 5 stars because Queen is awesome, but it’s a way different sound than I expected. I still really like a couple (Of Rhye was fun as hell), but it had way more hard rock than I was expecting, and as much as I like Brian May, Mercury is the star for a reason and I think other albums were better for featuring him.
Fun to listen to while working and enjoyed a second helping of the instrument quiz
Obviously Fire and Rain is outstanding, but I really enjoyed the rest of the album a lot. It’s a really interesting mix of big band and country and rock that I didn’t realize existed before.
I’m only through 10 songs but I’m calling it now. This is way too much electro pop whatever for me in a row. Not my jam.
It has a lot of the annoying singing parts from Come On Eileen and not enough of anything else I like to overcome it... and you weren’t kidding about the extensive horn use
I took a semester of jazz quiz and sang “I Fuckin Love Watchin You Piss” in Louis Armstrong’s voice in Ross’ room every day. I will not subjugate myself to listening to any more free form no-vocal jazz music. This is one star and anyone who says otherwise can answer to Larry Dwyer himself.
The little musical interludes were kind of fun breaks to actual tracks and I think set the album up well. I enjoyed the sorta lighthearted vibe, and the sound from these older albums just sounds good, so I really enjoyed it without knowing how to describe it. The Francis Drake one that was long and purely instrumental also caused me to dive into his Wikipedia page, so I’ll add an extra star for the potential LearnedLeague help.
Wow that first track was a painful start, but I liked most of the other tracks more - just wish they didn’t have those parts where the rhythm and melody are both totally disregarded. I’m not a big punk fan, but I think they had some pretty cool intertwining of vocals and instrumentals that made it a fun listen.
I enjoyed the first track and the dream one, but the Milk thing alone required one star to be subtracted. It was an eclectic mix of fun and strange.
Burned out toward the end but DAMN the first few songs are absolute hottrax... could use more MJ albums in this list, anyone who has ears can enjoy this
Pretty fun album that made grinding through an hour of document review more fun and tolerable. I wouldn’t listen unless I had something boring to grind through, though.
I don’t really like his voice, but there’s no denying that the production value is high and the songs are fun to vibe/bounce/verbs to. Stunned I went above two stars for this.
There were a couple songs I enjoyed here, like Adult Books, but it was overall a bit too whiny-grungy to be a good listen.
A bit of a cacophonous noise album, but his abilities with a guitar an basically magic, and Purple Haze and Wind Cries Mary are gold.
That was an extraordinarily enjoyable 40 minutes - which I really enjoyed as an album length but I imagine pissed people off back in the day. Half of these are classic rock anthems, but I really liked the others too. The sound is consistent and not too varied but I love it.

Not a huge fan of this genre (emo-ish rock) but thought the beats were pretty catchy and thought it did a nice job of highlighting his talent as a lyricist
I enjoy some of the early psychedelic rock like this, but there was too much scattered noise and favoring of one ear over the other (don’t know the technical term for that) for me to really enjoy it
It’s not horrible, but it’s definitely not my jam
Lots of nope - I gave it a shot
Obviously some absolute jams here, but I really liked ‘39, which I’d never heard before, and The Prophet’s Song” was like a Bohemian Rhapsody 2.0 that I didn’t know existed.
Well this was one of the weirder sets of music I’ve ever heard... lot of names of people and the same tone for everything, seemed pretty low-quality to my ears
Not what I expected when I started to listen - more of the soft soul type music than the up tempo soul I had imagined. It was a decent listening album, but it was a little melancholy and Daddy Was a Rolling Stone was so long as to put me close to sleep.
I wasn’t surprised to see that the dude died shortly after this was released. It had some interesting composition pieces, but his voice is mostly speaking and the mood a bit melancholy instead of how I think of Jonny Cash toward the end of his life.
Hip and funky and a fun listen - never watched the movie but might be worth it for the music alone
I was fully prepared for 4 stars here, but the Oasis I was familiar with sure mellowed out a lot. I enjoyed a couple tracks, but it was way noisier than I was expecting or liked.
You can really tell he’s going for a Beatles vibe, but he’s just not good enough of a singer and doesn’t have enough energy in the beat to make it a very good impression.
