American Gothic
David AcklesSo glad to have found this album. The songwriting, the stories, the atmospheres. Vaudeville, Americana, Tom Waits, and the weight of the world. Ended up spending a lot more time with it than I thought I would. Thank you!

I've listened to this album before, but its been a while. I always chalk Bruce up to his hits - which are deep on their own, but often fall into the poppier rock pantheon. Thats unfair. This is a fantastic album that is a rock/blues masterpiece that sounds just like Bruce. Has to be his finest work and one of the greatest albums of all time.
Man, the influence on contemporary music, 80s music, etc,f are alllll over this album. Talking heads, bowie, more contemporary bands like Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. It's creative. It's got tons of character. Fun to listen to.
Fantastic album. It does feel oddly polished for Elliott Smith, which takes away some of his appeal for me. Songs are fantastic, but not his best album. Somehow the lyrics are some of the most depressing, as he discusses suicide, but it feels like polished pop? Hmm,...
Perhaps the greatest hip hop album of all time.
One of the greatest live albums of all time. Shows a distinctly intimate and personal style to Nirvana. This is them right at the precipice...

The truth is... I like this album OK. I don't find the songs particularly interesting. The instrumentation and production is excellent. When it first released I remember listening to it and just feeling fine about it. But... I'm giving this 4 because it still has a massive impact on me. It feels like Bowie is talking from the grave. It feels like a premonition. It's like the ultimate piece of performance art. Gotta give props for that.
Fuck the Police
Living on a Prayer is a classic... but this style is just not for me. Poppy arena rock. Lots of flash. Minimal substance. Just not what fills me.
I feel like this is an album where it would grow on me with many repeat listens. Since I'm doing this 1001 thing I'm not really able to do that in the same way (although I will come back to it) I'm giving it 4 stars. I could see a future me giving it 5.
I do really like this. The soft pop style doesn't totally work for me, but the elements of folk rock, that it seems they helped to coin with this album, are excellent. So many Dylan songs which feels really weird to me, and I like them... but don't beat the emotional availability that Dylan uses to highlight his work. Enjoyable listen.
