Popular Reviews

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean

I'll be honest, I had very low expectations, and half of this album met those on the nose. But once we got past the usual misogynistic dross, there were a few tunes in here that I kind of enjoyed - Super Rich Kids had me humming along, Bad Religion I liked. Enough to come back to it? I doubt it, but I don't regret listening.

Since I Left You by The Avalanches
Sep 26 2023

As sonic wallpaper while I worked it was fine, but I don't know why someone would deliberately sit down and listen to this.

Music in Exile by Songhoy Blues
Sep 29 2023

Admittedly Malian blues funk isn’t usually high on my list of dog walk listening material, but good work lads

In Utero by Nirvana
Sep 30 2023

As a child of the 90s, Nirvana is in my wheelhouse, but I think this is the first time I’ve listened to In Utero end to end. It’s… fine?

Immigrés by Youssou N'Dour
Oct 01 2023

Pleasant enough for a Sunday afternoon

Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
Oct 02 2023

Meh. Didn't hate it but not likely to be coming back

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
Oct 04 2023

It feels a bit like cheating when you get an album that you already know well, but don't mind this one bit. I can see it might not be everybody's taste though, and perhaps it needed a couple more upbeat tracks to round it off.

Tapestry by Carole King
Oct 07 2023

This is already in my music downloads on my phone, because it’s a classic

Exile In Guyville by Liz Phair
Oct 09 2023

Liz Phair, dearly beloved of mid 90s music press, but somehow passed me by. To my great regret, because I really enjoyed this

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Oct 10 2023

Bonus point for the relief I felt when I realised it wasn’t Limp Bizkit

1989 by Taylor Swift
Oct 12 2023

Ignore the snobs. Pop greatness.

Liquid Swords by GZA
Oct 14 2023

If it was my sort of thing I’d probably love it, but it’s not so I don’t

1984 by Van Halen
Oct 15 2023

Yeah... no. This is of a time that I think is best forgotten. On the plus side, it's only 33 minutes long.

At Budokan by Cheap Trick
Oct 16 2023

As someone who thinks Surrender is one of the best pop songs ever written, this has long been on my "to listen" list. Sadly I have to agree with many of the other reviewers, I don't think I've really missed out. Other than Surrender it's pretty vanilla rock'n'roll.

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Oct 17 2023

I'll take it

Third by Portishead
Oct 18 2023

Not my jam, but let's not pretend that if this was Radiohead you wouldn't be calling it the best album ever.

Sunshine Hit Me by The Bees
Oct 19 2023

Nice, but I don't think I'd make a point of listening to it

Scream, Dracula, Scream by Rocket From The Crypt
Oct 20 2023

Being of an age to have seen RFTC live at Reading in '96, this has a certain nostalgia for me. It does fairly rock along too, although it's not the most sophisticated music going, and the well-known songs (On A Rope, Born In '69) are probably the highlights.

The Blueprint by JAY Z
Oct 21 2023

Jay-Z has a small winky, pass it on. As it happens, I was going to skip this but in the spirit of the project I ploughed on fully expecting to hate it, but ... I didn't. The music production is great, a rap record where I don't just think every song sounds the same. But, ffs guys, let's find something else to talk about than h*es and n*ggas?
