I used to love listening to DAMN. or Coloring Book while making art after smoking a spiff. Elements of this album brought me back to that; but, the realness of those albums wasn't in this. It felt like it was compensating for something in a painfully overwhelming way. With that said, the album is kinda rough, but there are some great songs within.
Seeing this album live in my youth was surreal! Didn’t love listening through as much this time.
My papa loves Rod Stewart and I’ve enjoyed listening to Rod with him. So this album has been great. It’s also has a sound that feels like his early years.
Only knew Sultans of Swing before listening to this album, but I was hooked on this different sound and the first track. Love how most every song has a mystery sound making me wonder what instrument could do that. Is that a pan flute? Is that a synth? No way an organ? IDK, but I'm here for all of it! Only 4 stars though, cause it is a little repetitive and flow isn't ideal with every song being around 5min.
Prefacing these notes with my choice to listen with headphones while vacuuming. Noise pollution aside, De La Soul made a truly unique album here. Unique is over used, as is sampling in this De La Soul's album; nevertheless, considering the release date for this album, their skilled mixing balances out any notion(s) of overuse. Although I did not enjoy every track or the progression through members of the tracks individual perspectives, I cannot deny this is one of a kind.
The Seed 2.0 is the only song I knew by the Roots before listening to Phrenology. I didn't listen very closely, but it seemed like this album had a narrative, so I'll likely give it another go sometime later on.
I’ve got nothing to say besides Miles Davis expertly produced a cool album of relaxed, smooth, and enjoyable jazz.
Never heard this one before. Solid.
Would give 3.75 if it was possible. Good album, but it feels like it's meant for a movie and not the other way around.
Easy listening soft rock. Not the best eagles album tho
Always fall into a relaxed trance listening to Bob Marley.
Lennon's sound, independent of the Beatles, is very interesting to hear beyond imagine. The classic Imagine, nevertheless, opening the album likely would have led me to stop listening to the album if I weren't baking. The songs that followed mostly sounded like they were all precursors to that one great Lennon classic.
not for me
Iconic sounds like deep purple are great early on, but the tracks are too long for me. Couldn’t get past 20min of listening
Steely Dan feels separated from the gamut of American popular music while showcasing multiple genres that are deeply rooted in American music history.
Green Day captures angst well, and although they might've sold out in terms of punk, I'm glad they did. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have had these hits to enjoy in my youth and angst filled teen years. Not as relatable anymore, but still a lot of fun!
Thought I loved Elton John, but I now know I only loved the hits; and harmony.
Only crime here was listing this in place of breakfast in America
Strong start with walk on, but it just drifted on to feel like one endless song from there. 3 stars only for the first song.
Pleasantly surprised
