funky. very funky. quite melodic in parts with some interesting harmonies. lyrics make negative sense. trying to understand, much less make out what kiedis is singing is an achual work out, i am burning calories.
darker, more soulful, and overall more serious than i thought it was going to be. especially in the later half of the album. stand out tracks, papa was a rollin stone (duh), but also "mother nature" and "do the right thing", insane back to back 1 2 combo to end the album.
crazy way to start an album with baba o reily. the rest is a mixed bag for me. maybe needs more attention. water is great though
that was fantastic. found everything immediately noteworthy and consistent. had a little of everything i love, and bluesy solos thrown in for good measure. wild wood was THE stand out track.
the arrangement is so big and so unique that everything so old can sound so new to me like for "white Christmas". also realised this is the album where "Christmas (baby please come home)". also, how great is Darlene love? great new takeaway for me. The bells of st. mary is a stand out.
beautiful instrumentation. beautiful lyrics. "you want it darker" does set the tone even if it is a bit odd for my expectations i.e. it is more spoken word and hymnal than a conventional song. same can be said for the rest of the album, more spoken than sung. stand out songs, "if i didn't have your love", "steer your way"
very interesting. a bit altj-ish. first few tracks in a row up till "firewater" are great. too much lead in with the instrumental at times. but overall i liked it.
short and very clean. captures (or is the template?) for a specific 60s rock and roller sensibility. in that context, even though "all my loving" and "money (thats what i want)" are the tracks that are best remembered, they fit in and are not so distinct from everything else on the album. for me, "all ive got to do" is a standout. something about the bass and the stop start percussion on the drums. gave the album two listens straight through, cause easy and short.
lovely voice, very big sounds, classic in nature but so tonally similar from start to end, hard to pick out anything distinct. although "oh lady be good" kinda stands out for me. should revisit if ever there is time
very different from what i was expecting, even if im not sure what i was expecting. very bluesy in parts, some funk, progressive rock, lots of keys. the creation of atmosphere is also outstanding. especially on "riders of the storm" or "l'america". not a fan of the latter but point still stands. "Cars Hiss by my window" is my standout. can imagine just putting it on and getting lost.
excellent stuff. a bit long but very worth it. very "london calling", has a bit of everything but none of it clashes (ehehe) and it all complements well. ska rock reggae punk it does it all. "enjoy yourself" really grows on you. "i cant stand it" and "stereotype" stand out.
two songs. five stars. thats it, thats the notes.
very different from what i was expecting e.g. cisco kid and low rider. overall a very funky ride and some calmer bits, almost bluesy?
raw sound and i can hear the tone that shows up elsewhere. "penetration" really sticks with you
didnt really catch my attention
defining piece of work that gets richer the more you listen to it. stand out track "swimming pools" for sure
