Under My Thumb was the only song on this album I'd heard before and I still dig it, though it's not my favorite Stones song. The others are just ok - not exactly my taste. I respect their vibe but probably wouldn't come back to this album if I'm honest.
I'm already biased about Steve Wonder since I heard him so much growing up. I vaguely knew this album already but never consciously listed to it straight through like this. I found myself absentmindedly singing along to most of the songs. Not my favorite album of his (obviously Songs in the Key of Life is) but still really enjoyed it and it brought me back to childhood. Also made me a little sad because my dad loved Stevie and he's the reason I know so much of his discography.
Neil has such a unique voice that I think is an acquired taste that I've only partially acquired. I think I've heard more of his stuff with CSNY or CNY (specifically Heart of Gold) but there's a simple, pure quality to his songs that feels optimistic and light. It's not my favorite by any means but I respect the longevity of his career.
Meh.
Ahh, yes. So many good songs on this album. I still can't help but like Van Morrison's older music despite the controversial lyrics in his newer stuff (anti-vax, antisemitism, etc.). I've loved And It Stoned Me and Into the Mystic since college and still put them on chill playlists from time to time. I'd completely forgotten about the songs Caravan and Everyone, but I really enjoyed them both while listening through the album. I'm pretty sure I first heard Everyone on a movie soundtrack (The Royal Tenenbaums - I went through a Wes Anderson phase like probably a ton of people) and it's a lighthearted, feel-good song.
There's something about Head Over Heels that I like. I don't know why or what it is, but I couldn't help but add it to my starred playlist. The full album is a little too 80s for me, but considering the almost 1.5 billion listens to Everybody Wants to Rule the World on Spotify, I think most people can say they at least like one of their songs.
Started listening to this song and immediately thought, "Why does this sound like Steely Dan?" I'm sure others already knew that he was a member but I was just impressed that I recognized his voice immediately since I never knew his name. Turns out I also vaguely know I.G.Y. from childhood.
Love this album. It came out in 2004, the same year I graduated high school, so I definitely listened to the three singles on this album A LOT during that time. I think Mr. Brighside will live on as an online trope of sorts ("coming out of my cage and I've been doing JUST FINE") and I will never fail to scream/sing along to it anytime I hear it. All These Things That I've Done is probably my favorite from this album.
I didn't realize that I knew more than one song on this album. I like Cherub Rock, Today, and Disarm but never got into the band enough to buy or download a full album. I also don't know that I ever knew the names of these songs :) The album makes me feel nostalgic for a time in the '90s when I was too young to really know what kind of music I actually liked. I remember friends who were into rock liking them but I don't think I fully appreciated what they had to offer.
If you'd asked me to name a Dire Straits album before today, I'd have had no idea. If you'd asked me to name a song, I would have said Romeo and Juliet (and likely forgotten about the gems on this album). So far away is super chill, the build up to the guitar coming in on Money for Nothing is cool, and Walk of Life is just really pleasant to listen to with those soothing organ(?) sounds. Mark Knopfler's voice isn't my favorite but it doesn't take away from the songs I enjoyed. Overall not an album I'd come back to aside from the few songs I liked.
I have to admit I was not at all excited to listen to this album. It doesn't help that Janet looks ESPECIALLY like Michael on the album cover (it's the nose, isn't it???). I've never been a fan, which isn't to say I don't like her music, I just never felt particularly interested in listening to her. I don't like her voice. Rhythm Nation is....just ok. I was much more interested in listening to MJ's music growing up (including the Jackson 5) but not really Janet. Sorry, Janet!
Seems pretty cool for what it is, but I'm not really into instrumental, jazzy-sounding albums.
Beck is weird. I think we can all agree on that. Whether in a good or bad way is up to the listener. Not really a fan of his stuff in general other than Loser.
TIL that weird TikTok sped up song is actually Them Changes by Thundercat. "Nobody move there's blood on the floor, and I can't find my heart." I was surprised to see a collab with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins (???) I don't really know what to make of this album. It's got a really chill feel to it but I don't know if I like it or not?
