Coat Of Many Colors
Dolly Parton
Seems like I've known of Dolly Parton my whole life but only know her biggest hits. Not a country music fan, would not have listened to this when I was younger but I'm certain now I'll listen to it again. Solid and enjoyable musically, Dolly's voice (a true warble) would not typically be my cup of tea but, again, it's so familiar and she really conveys emotions well without crossing into maudlin even though some of the lyrics do.

Amnesiac
Radiohead
Amnesiac is the first album (of only three!) that I was excited to listen to. Musically interesting, generally my jam, but pretty low key and gloomy. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'll listen again some time but rating it 3 out of 5.

Thelonious Monk
Thoroughly enjoyed this album. Aware that Thelonious Monk was a giant artist of jazz but didn't prefer his style of playing. Appreciate it more now, loved the group. Favourite song is Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are.

The Smiths
I never loved the Smiths, never loved the combination of Morrisey's voice and their melodies although I can admire his voice, some lyrics and the band's playing. This album didn't do anything for me.

Hmmmm… the first album I could not appreciate at all. It did make me want to try something more conventional.

Bone Machine
Tom Waits
Sigh… Tom Waits voice is almost unlistenable to me. First song just jarring (musically cool and interesting though!), making me feel so tense I was wondering under what possible circumstance I could possibly enjoy listening to it. The next several, I kind of settled into his gravel and expression but about half way through I couldn’t continue. I will listen to him in the future only in small doses. (Thinking of his rendering of It’s All Right with Me on Red, Hot and Blue which is similar musically and voacally to Bone Machine.)

With The Beatles
Beatles
Even though it's not their first album, I tried to listen to this as though they haven't been ubiquitous my whole life. Pretty much impossible but it's cool their unmistakable sound was there from the beginning! Really enjoyed it. Did not know until now that Money (That's What I Want) is not an original Beatles song!

This album quickly got intensely emotional... I didn't have bandwidth for this yesterday. Rating it 5 stars even though I couldn't finish it for now.

Miles Davis
The first “1001” album that I was familiar with. One of my favourites… it’s so perfect. Tried to listen to it imagining it’s effect in 1959, pretty hard to do.

The first 1001 album that isn't available in Spotify so listened to it on Youtube with ads, a bit annoying. Is this prog rock? If not, reminds of it. If I'm in the mood to listen to something like this I would travel back to Selling England by the Pound, Even in the Quietest Moments, Turn of the Century, or even Days of Future Passed.

k.d. lang
k.d. lang is one of my all time favourite artists so this album is a favourite too. I remember learning something important from it... listening to it when it first came out, I sometimes felt myself wishing k.d. would really let loose and sing the way she can but I realized that she was (I think!) treating her voice like an instrument among the group. It made me appreciate the idea that even though you can blow the roof off with your singing, and people love that!, not doing so can be the right approach for the musicality and emotion of the songs. And helped me appreciate a whole range of other singers when I encountered them later on. Anyway it's gorgeous and emotional from beginning to end.

Willie Nelson
These are great songs. But they're much better sung by many others. I don't know why you would listen to this unless you were already a Willie Nelson fan (I'm not a fan of his voice). He's written standards himself. Would he rather listen to himself or Patsy Cline sing Crazy? The first album I don't think belongs on this list.

Writing this on my phone cause I don’t have much to say. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Their Spotify profile says “Limp Bizkit is an infectious spirit.” True! But I didn’t get infected and I’ll probably never listen to this again.

My teenage son can’t understand how I don’t know their music. Three songs in, I’m loving this. Musically my jam, Lou Reed’s singing has not always been something I can bear, but perfect here. First album in this project where I’m reading the lyrics.

Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin were huge throughout my childhood and high school. I never liked them. Based on multiple hard rock bands, typified by Led Zeppelin, I thought I didn't like electric guitar AT ALL and realized I am not a rocker-girl. Never liked Robert Plant's voice, and still don't. I appreciate them more now... liked the bluesier, more stripped down parts of songs (You Shook Me, I Can't Quit You Baby -- lead me to Willie Dixon), really appreciate that they didn't like to release singles, have 6+ minute songs. Still not my jam but appreciate that they're great.
