My introduction to Black Sabbath was through my mom (my intro into most music), who always changed the station any time they came on because HER earliest memories of them are of my uncle locking himself in his (their shared) room, blasting Sabbath, and stinking up the place with weed. It was such a visceral experience for her when they came on and naturally, I was excited to discover a new way to annoy her. So, with my limited resources (I was 12) I acquired a Vol. 4 CD—not quite enough resources to also get weed—and would play it non-stop when she got home from her long workday. Anyway, Changes is an all-time favorite for me and I love its melancholic departure from their usual sound. That said, it's followed by one of the most baffling choices on any album ever. FX is an immediate skip with no hesitation from me. An experiment that doesn't come close to fitting the flow of the album at all. This is nearly a 5-star album for me for many reasons. But despite how much I love this album, it's the only Black Sabbath record I've listened to front-to-back. It makes me wonder why I never really explored them further. Also, I'm going to call my mom and apologize.
Not many thoughts here, reliable, nostalgic, no skips, etc. wish i could give half stars. Haven't listened to this one all the way through in a very long time and enjoyed it but not quite 5 for me
I have so many thoughts about this! I’m not really familiar with the world of jazz, and Thelonious Monk is a new name to me, but it reminded me how much I really enjoy it even though I rarely listen to it. I’m not very musically-inclined, so I find the way jazz is often so flexible with rhythm really impressive—there’s not always a clear pattern to it for me. But I definitely have to be in the right mood for it. It works well as background music, but when I need to focus, the unpredictable sounds can get overwhelming. My brain tries to organize it, and it just ends up being too much. Also reminds me I haven't been to the Green Mill in a while and should probably make a trip soon ... @brett
I'm torn on this rating. As a collection of songs I thoroughly enjoy them and would listen to this one a lot - 4 stars. Whether or not it should be on this list as a collection of songs not original to Willie Nelson is debatable. If this list is about pure enjoyment and albums you should experience maybe ownership shouldn't matter, especially since the originality is certainly there in this album. Yeah actually I've made up my mind I'm a fan
I admittedly didn't listen to the whole thing so maybe I can't vote but i'm going to anyway. I enjoyed a few of the songs and one of them was giving some good 70s Queen vibes which was fun. A couple others I had to skip. Probably would not listen to this album specifically again but would pick one or two to take with me.
I may get slaughtered for this but listening to this album, then going back and listening to some old Bowie I realized I may not be much of a Bowie fan. I'm a fan of some of the instrumentals but none of these tracks are really landing for me and I'll likely never seek them out again
I love this album
If you took a peek into my bright blue sticker-covered CD player on any given day in 2006, there was a good chance you’d find this spinning inside. Early on, The Loser In The End quickly became a favorite. I loved the sound, the drum intro so sticky in my brain. But I also loved the lyrics. I remember feeling that it was a serious, emotional song but not at all knowing why or what it was actually about. But the label "loser in the end" stuck with me. My sister, who is six years older (an unimaginably vast gap at the time, now meaningless) and I used to fight all the time but as sisters do it was always with our words. The winner always being the one with the bigger vocabulary (never me). Being the younger sibling, my comebacks never seemed to land quite like hers did. I decided I’d use this new phrase as a comeback in our next fight, picturing myself conceding, admitting to being the loser now but playing the long game, getting the last laugh... eventually, whatever that meant. When I finally threw it out there, my sister just looked confused and asked, "What does that even mean?". An attempt to make the joke-teller explain their joke, losing all the punch in the process. But in my mind, I’d won, because she hadn’t grasped this “profoundly deep” statement. We grew up. She went off to college, I missed her horribly for the first time ever, and we haven’t fought since, no losers in the end. Today, I realize the actual subject matter of this song and it feels even heavier and more relevant than it ever was. The ultimate commitment and investment of motherhood, perhaps the only example of unconditional love in a lifetime, etc etc etc. I could go on and on about the subject of this song. The second album on this list that makes me want to call my mom to reminisce and thank her, want to come back in my next life as her mother just to return the favor. My favorite re-listen so far, my first 5-star rating. It’s still my favorite Queen album, partly because these tracks rarely pop up in pop culture, making a full re-listen feel like the first time all over again.
I enjoyed this one. I've never heard any of their stuff and really the only time I've heard the name was recently bc Patrick Keeler is currently playing with Jack White. There were a couple tracks here I would probably skip the second time around but certainly saved a couple. When We Two Parted stuck out to me (pattern developing of me favoring any slow emo song) good soup
I'm into this. I like what I've heard of Nick Cave in general but a lot of these were new to me. My favorite was Hiding All Away (I think because it was reminding me of the white stripes, specifically elephant) Would definitely listen to again but not at the top of my list. 3.5/5
What an icon. I don't listen to her enough but I let this play through twice. Also, the Jack White Loretta Lynn crossover and their chemistry in Portland Oregon lives rent free in my mind. Will be listening to again, 3.75 but rounding up
I really liked this and I knew i would from the first 5 seconds of the first track. Definitely the sound I typically opt for, though I hadn't listened to this album before, just have heard a few of their songs here and there, Rock and Roll Woman being one of them (probably my fav from this one)
I've not listened to this whole album until now. It doesn't make my short list of favorite smiths albums but still really enjoyed listening to it front to back
My first time listening to a Sex Pistols album, I've really only heard the hits. There were a few highlights on this one for me, but I'm not sure I would set out to listen again.
I don't know exactly what the feeling is that I get when I listen to The White Stripes but I do know I never tire of experiencing it and I only appreciate it more with time. Not their best album, but that doesn't mean anything to me because i love all of it. 4.5/5
I don't know if I listened to the right album, I couldn't find this one on spotify but I found a playlist with the correct name and year. Either way, very enjoyable listen. Classic artist that I couldn't tire of if I tried
not a huge REM gal but enjoyed the listen. probably won't be seeking it out again any time soon
loved listening to this front to back for the first time. i've always liked most hendrix i've heard but i've never had a phase of really seeking out his music. lots of familiar hits on this album. red house stuck out to me and was one i hadn't heard before
This is an insane comparison but something about The Day After The Revolution is giving Billy Mack from the movie The Holiday (I just watched this which is why it's on my mind) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-bErbL5MVc Anyway, I'm not a big Pulp guy but I think I like His n Hers more than this one
I've literally never heard the name Grizzly Bear but obviously I've seen a movie in the last decade and change so I recognized Two Weeks. Otherwise, I'm into it. really transported me back to that time and reminds me of some other stuff around then. no strong feelings either way on this one
I have so many thoughts and no words at the same time.. this may be the most interesting album we've had so far. I've never heard of them and was surprised to see an album from a band with so few monthly listeners, but cool to see So many interesting sounds going on in these tracks, mostly in a fashion that just feel interesting to me as opposed to actually wanting to sit and listen to it. I love an instrumental intro so that got points from me Donald duck in The Rake ??? Weird day of working with this on in the background, probably wouldn't listen to again with the sun up and stone cold sober
I actually just recently listened to this front to back for the first time a couple months ago. Dolly can truly do no wrong to me. I first started listening to her when I became obsessed with miley's younger now album, which features dolly. I went into a bit of a rabbit hole and was so happy to have done so. queen
