Time of the season is such a huge song, rest of the album was pleasant enough
Not really aged well, it’s just fine but not very interesting to listen to.
Bad vibes of Moz aside, it’s an alright album. Title track’s a bit boring though, we get it. Meat bad, fascism good.
It’s really only the first few songs that are as good as anything on the next few albums, and the bonus tracks don’t really help much. Never really the same when they got rid of the bass player who got his dick out.
Good album when it’s not fretwanking, which isn’t very often. Kashmir is a great song though. Would it have been a double album in the age of CDs? Not sure I gelled with most of the second disc. Probably worth it to have the 9 minute Kashmir though. Obviously one of the bands Jack White borrowed from.
Pretty sure everyone wants a girl as cool as Kim Deal.
Not quite got the tunes that 13 Tales does, and some of them drag a bit (Be-In doesn’t even start until 2 minutes in), but still holds up pretty well. Probably a good stoner album, I wouldn’t know.
I’m more familiar with Songs From A Room, but this album’s really got the songs. I don’t know how anyone could write anything as good as Stranger Song. We truly didn’t deserve Leonard Cohen.
Just a bit mid, really. I think every song is about a minute too long, and the electronic drums just makes it sound a bit bland. Maybe one step up from landfill indie. Could’ve been replaced by almost any other 2010s indie album and it’d be a step up.
Planet Rock’s really the only song that’s any good. Can’t remember if they break this album in Shaun Of The Dead, but that’s probably what it deserves. Not interesting enough to make it worth listening to the Gary Glitter of hip hop.
For some reason I get along with Neil Young more than CS&N, maybe because he doesn’t try to play every instrument on this so it sounds like a band. (Been listening to this more since rating it, definitely a 5 instead of 4)
If you like one song, you’ll love this album because they’re all the same song. Inoffensive but that’s about it.
Was a pretty big fan through the first 3 albums (and even before, when the YYY EP came out). Think it still holds up, but having been around at the time probably helped. One of the few times that NME didn’t lie to us.
Some good singles, but it’s not an album I can love
Think this more stands for Riot Grrrl bands than this album, it’s alright but not even my favourite Sleater-Kinney - none of the songs really stand out
If you don’t like this then you just have objectively bad taste.
Like taking a warm bath of white noise.
It’s amazing how the same album can have a song that’s unintentionally funnier than Spinal Tap (Don’t Tread On Me), and a fair shout for one of the top 10 songs ever (Nothing Else Matters).
Wouldn’t Mama Be Proud is an all-timer, nice to revisit such a good album.
Music to watch the X-Files go by. Probably not quite as good as Doolittle, but it’s a little less dark so I think I prefer it. The second half is slightly weaker, but it’s still got The Happening, my favourite song’s All Over The World
The artwork’s bad, the production’s frequently worse, all the best songs are barely longer than one minute. But this album still fucking rules. It sounds exactly like how it was probably made, with no rehearsals and a crate of beer, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Alright!
Still holds up more than 20 years later. Probably suffers slightly from the self-imposed limitations (what if they actually had a bass player?), but that’s also what gives it a structure
I was going to listen to Kanye for this, but after the pro-Hitler song (and really even before that), I just can’t.
Don’t know why the album has the slightly worse version of Shot By Both Sides. The Light Pours Out Of Me is the stand-out here, but a pretty good post-punk album
You’ve maybe got to have a bit of tolerance for Sonic Youth - I definitely wouldn’t start with this over Daydream Nation, cos that’s really almost their landmark album. I like it though, it’s got a good vibe but not every song sounds the same.
You’re missing out if you don’t listen to the full In A Doghouse compilation, the demos are almost the highlight.
Spoilt a little in the UK cos we got it with Come On Pilgrim on the same CD - definitely think having Caribou and ending it on Levitate Me hides that the last few songs of the album proper are bit weak.
But I can't rate this anything less than 5 stars, the highs outweigh the lows.
Absurdly short album, especially for a compilation but the songs are so good.
