Surfer Rosa
PixiesClassic garage/grunge, hard to get through if you aren't in the mood though. The vibes are classic either way. Has Where Is My Mind, which is a classic.

Man, what a classic. The thing that sticks out to me the most is Kurt's voice. He had such a signature twang that I don't think I've ever heard before. It really set the tone for the entire grunge movement. I love how fucked up and beautiful it is. Which is the ethos of grunge I most admire.
Jangly, high-quality 60s pop that really hits the spot for what you think the 60s sounds like. To that end, I think their act was a little derivative while at the same time being influential and meaningful. That's the 60s for ya.
What a voice, what a message! Couldn't find the full album but the Winter in America piece was fantastic. I didn't realize his voice was so nice, having read him as a college student. The message never gets old. Especially not right now. Almost comforting to know that there have been trials and tribulations in the past that were made better with community and speaking truth to power like Gil.
Seminal, amazing work that honestly only gets better with age. As someone who grew up on the more Beatles side of things, it's interesting to hear the different, more passive perspective coming from the Beach Boys during this time of experimentation. It's sincere, sweet even. God Only Knows remains one of the great songs ever written.
I really fell off with Jack after the Stripes broke up and it was largely due to this album. I feel like the difference between this and even Icky Thump is stark. Less dynamic and textured and more of the fast-talking rap-singing schtick which has more or less become his whole deal. I'm an "actually the White Stripes are an art-house blues band" guy so this isn't groundbreaking news to anyone.
Classic, blistering thrash. Battery is probably a perfect thrash track. Master of Puppets is a classic (and a bitch to play) and Disposable Heroes grew on me this time around.
What can we say about the Offspring?? This is their incredible smash hit (see what I did) album from the 90s and it's still exactly as I remember it: kind of bad, kind of insane, but dripping with heart, honesty, and realness. They were real punks in a time of corporatism. The lead singer's voice is nasally and upsetting. Their songs are about how much they suck. They are shamefully noisy. God I love it.
Who knew about the history of the organ in jazz?? Jimmy Smith did and now so do I. A pleasant, jazzy album with a super subtle but integral organ track underneath it all.
Who knew this album had ambient music -- the more I learn about Bowie, the more I love him. They didn't write any lyrics to this stuff, just got up there and talked. Highly bizarre but in the kind of way you can't get enough of. The music boogies.
Classic new wave. Flea from RHCP said he draws a lot of inspo from them and I could see it this time around. The back half of the album is banger after banger.
What can I say about this album? It changed my life along with most of the post-'64 Beatles catalog. This is the silly, vapid rock and roll of the 50s and early 60s coming of age in a real, complete way. Pop music would never be the same. Also the songs STILL SLAP. Can you believe that?
Boy what an insane 35 minutes. You can tell its real, raw punk by the way the guitars play the same riffs throughout the song. Really though, I miss this kind of iconoclastic music. Punks like Iggy here showed the world that the beauty of the world can be found in the grime and the muck too.
Good solid new wave, The Cure knew what they were about.
Great, straightforward punk rock. There's a reason these guys are considered genre defining.
I liked it! I haven't had a ton of experience with this brand of indie/pop rock from that era and from Wales apparently. I enjoyed the hard-hitting lyricism and the composition and vocals were right up my alley.
Great! Supernaut is insanely good, didn't know I like another Sabbath album outside of Paranoid.
