1984 by Van Halen
Aug 12 2025

Bombastic, fast-paced, and with the energy only a cocoa plant can provide, 1984 is quintessential rock and roll of the 1980s. That of course comes with the usual caveats; rampant misogyny, uninteresting lyrical themes, no slow songs whatsoever, and wildly short 33 minute run time. Surprise tracks that I hadn’t heard; Top Jimmy, I’ll wait, Drop Dead Legs. Eddie at the top of his game and brilliant as always, just wish it wasn’t in such a generic package. DLR is not a top-tier lead by any means. Not sure I would have bought this album while copies of thriller were on the shelf.

Young Americans by David Bowie
Aug 13 2025

It’s funny that the album seen as one of Bowie’s “experimental” albums is actually celebrates one of the more commonly popular genres of the time (soul/R&B). So his experiment is to try to be typical. And it works…mostly. I think to say it’s a miss-step is maybe an overstatement, but to say it’s unfitting of his style and artistic direction is accurate. It’s always a little strange to hear one artist famous for a certain genre step into another, but because he was so talented, he did a serviceable job. The highlight, of course, is Fame. None of the other tracks actually stood out to me at all. John Lennon’s Midas touch (guitar and vocals on Across the Universe and Fame) of course saves this album. Overall, not bad, but also not even close to his best.

Aug 14 2025

A very eclectic and funky set of songs, some jams that last too long, and some not long enough. The back half of the album is really when it takes off. It’s not available for streaming on music services, so I had to listen to the album as a whole on YouTube. I would be curious to see the count on the times the word “funk” is said throughout the album. It’s definitely in the three digit range. Overall, fun and interesting to listen to, although some songs are confusing, and the lyrics a bit dull and repetitive. The music and the musicianship is where this band shines, and this album is a good example of that. The addition of the live tracks at the end is a nice touch.

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Aug 15 2025

Best pop album of all time. Most of the songs on the album could be the best song on any other album if they stood alone. Just a thrill to listen to from front to back.

Remain In Light by Talking Heads
Aug 16 2025

I’m sure someone can connect with it! It seemed like it took a lot of work. I really don’t have any idea what happened to my ears though. Really flabbergasted.

Dookie by Green Day
Aug 17 2025

On of the defining albums of a generation. One of the first that fit the pop punk genre. Proud that they’re from the Bay Area.

Buena Vista Social Club by Buena Vista Social Club
Aug 18 2025

Such great musicianship. Language barrier doesn’t stop me from having a great time listening to this album.

Aug 19 2025

The punk band with a soft rock sound. Wolf in sheep’s clothing, in a good way. Good commentary on the events of that time. Man on the moon is my favorite.

Exile In Guyville by Liz Phair
Aug 20 2025

I’m always going to support a woman who curses and talks about real issues women face in their every day life. Especially in the time it was. But the vocals are lazy, the mix is just OK, and most of the songs are uninteresting and don’t stand out on their own.

Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
Aug 22 2025

Fun, imaginative, unique. The British Strokes. I like these guys a lot.

Live At Leeds by The Who
Aug 23 2025

Great performance. Good songs and energy. Know the band but they have new depth for me here.

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
Aug 24 2025

Great performance. Good songs and energy. Know the band but they have new depth for me here.

Boston by Boston
Aug 26 2025

Quintessential classic rock. Three bangers right off the bat. I learned they’re not in the rock and roll hall of fame yet. What’s up with that?

That's The Way Of The World by Earth, Wind & Fire
Aug 27 2025

Great musicianship, creativity, joy, love, and love. Some all-time hits. Not all great though.

Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub
Aug 28 2025

Fun and well produced alternative rock album. It’s definitely no never mind though.

Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters
Aug 30 2025

Impressive debut by Dave Grohl, that still carries the sound that Foo Fighters has today. Great vision and execution although the mixing could’ve been better. Not many songs that I can recall by name.

Basket of Light by Pentangle
Aug 31 2025

Let’s say I did listen to it because I only heard two songs and then turned it off.

Being There by Wilco
Sep 05 2025

Not bad, not good either. Weird pace and song order choices.

Sep 09 2025

Opera is a great way to describe this album. It’s no surprise that three of the tracks became mega hits. But there are also tracks like the prophet song that are just as avant-garde and brilliant as bohemian rhapsody. All and all a fun listen. And Freddie is spectacular as ever.

Sep 11 2025

A super creative and fun album. I’m always going to love queen.

California by American Music Club
Sep 12 2025

Boring. Nothing special. Weird vocals.

Moving Pictures by Rush
Sep 13 2025

Bangers from start to finish. Niel Peart is the man.

L.A. Woman by The Doors
Sep 14 2025

I like them in general, this album was just ok though.

Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
Sep 15 2025

A pleasant surprise. A lot of really advanced production for the time. Samples and digital mixing. Very cool.

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
Sep 16 2025

Not their best work. Good band though.

Nowhere by Ride
Sep 19 2025

Boring.

British Steel by Judas Priest
Sep 24 2025

Fun and classic hard rock
