First 2000s album and its euro techno supreme. I do like some electronic music and while I did like the overarching chill vibe with a lot of the album, there were still parts I didn’t like.
I wanted to like “sunworshipper”, but the constant snippet of dialogue was annoying when I was just trying to chill, and the title track had the same vibe with just naming 80s musicians that the speaker wanted to ban. I also didn’t like the cut stop/start sound in “Rikki” and “in my arms”
And while I did enjoy a few tracks (Muscle Cars, guilty of love and need you tonite) I everything else was just very average or forgettable track to be played in a club quickly forgotten. Decent album, but not a whole lot too it
2/5
This was a hard album to get through. I’m mot a fan of the peppers and when I saw how many tracks I let out a groan. It’s so funny cuz I can recognize the individual talent of all members, but put together it leads to results ranging from enjoyable to just kind of a funk-lite bore
Standouts include breaking the girl(love that middle breakdown), I could have lied, and under the bridge (their biggest hit and can actually see why, Ive listened to it plenty of times)
Everything else is just either annoying funk noises (give it away being the biggest offender) or just consistent 4-5 minute rock rap funk trials I’m just waiting to be over
I did like “theyre red hot” as an ended, one of my fave Robert Johnson songs. But either way, not a fan and won’t be revisiting
Some 60s pop from the start of the underrated Dusty Springfields long career. It’s always interesting to see where artist come from (listen to David bowies first album for a trip) but this is just a shining example of her great voice and how Motown and soul influenced her first pop outing
Mama said and you don’t Own me are so full of thst sort of doo-wop pop that she excelled at, and the nearly sinister towns of don’t own me give it’s a much of an edge as you can for a 60s girl pop hit
While do re mi was kind of so-so for me, “when the love light” was an excellent jolt of show time energy., with “coloring book” slow jamming is back down with a gorgeous instrumental track while 24 hours to Tulsa I’ve listened to st least a dozen times
Ultimately, while this album is full of covers (which was the style at the time for new musicians on the scene) I’m still in awe of the groundwork Dusty has left and would recommend the album for sure
Lowlights: fine time, round and round, Mr Disco
Highlights: guilty partner, run
I was surprised in this album as I usually associate New order with darker, grimier electronic music and a lot of this music was bright, not just the album color. It looks like they went to Ibiza and listened to more club music, which as it turns out I’m not into
Some stuff was good , liked when they returned to their sound in guilty partner and Run was a good track. But stuff like fine time and MrDisco just sounded like they were fucking out with a soundboard,
Also, Round and Round sounded like that one SpongeBob clip of him dancing with ol no name the jelly fish. Done there, awful to listen to.
Overall I can see what people like about this album and If your interested in seeing the growth and change in a band then this can be interesting. But ultimately I’m leaving this one in the sands of Ibiza
The first album on here that Ive reviewed that I’ve listened to. Patti smith, th punk rock poet laureate. Her debut album is phenomenal
Gloria is so devistating right off the rip (Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine). And while I do love some of the more traditional songs, redondo beach and free money, the long standing songs is what makes it special
May not be peoples bags, and not something I listen to it too often, but it’s the Patti smith experience that I enjoy .
Have heard this album a few times in high school so I’m familiar with this album and to be honest, how damn near perfect thus debut album is. How most of these songs are usually on Hendrix best of (purple haze hey Joe foxes lady, etc)
Always liked highway chile and red house as a bluesy wonder. I don’t have much to say other then that each song is attention getting and enjoyable.
As much as I loved the bangers of Rio and Hungry like the wolf, I didn’t find much variety or enjoyment out of any of the other tracks. They were fine, serviceable and maybe a lil catchy but nothing held a candle to those two tracks. Kind of a lackluster album
Highlights: wordy rappington, genius of love, L’elphant, Lorelei
Lowlight: Tom tom theme, booming and zooming
Fun Natural Fun! I loved this album. I had heard genius of live plenty of time but never got around to this whole album done by this splinter group of the talking heads
Worry rappington is definitely a litmus test to see if you’ll like what this album and I was all in. Genius of love is for sure a classic banger that’s been sampled like crazy and has plenty of crazy talk and such a groovy best (my favorite line thst I live bey, “WHO NEEDS TO THINK WHEN YOUR FEET JUST GO?!”)
L’elephant and Lorelei were two distinct sounds and bass heavy tracks that I find myself just getting lost in, and I really enjoyed the closer of under the boardwalk
The album isn’t flawless, while I can forgive tom tom club, booming and zooming was a chore to get through after all of the radio talking happened
Either way, this was a fun album that I will for sure find myself listening to post review. 4/5
A collection of covers of traditional folks songs done in such an intimate way with just a girl her guitar and incredible voice. It’s a must listen for folk enthusiasts (loved her rendition of house of the rising sun).
I absolutely loved this album. The Dammed have always been a blind spot in my British rock knowledge (clash, Sex Pistols, buzzcocks, the jam). So hearing this whole album in full was a great experience
This album is perfection. It’s versatile, and expressive, keeps me moving and wanting to hear more. I don’t have any real highlight lowlight cuz to me this is all killer no filler. Five stars all around
Sometimes there are points in a bands catalogue where, despite being such a die heart fan of their work , you jump off the ride and don’t look back. That’s how I felt about this album.
As much as I’m a fan of the white stripes first four albums and love all the splicing of Detroit garage rock and southern blues influence, this departure for their traditional work was a huge fumble in my ears.
Despite being a bit more daring then their other work, it sounds like a timestamp of the era and sounds like it belongs on ads of products of the day
Wasn’t a fan of the album when it came out, and after rehearing it, it just makes me want to go back to the other albums.
Good album by an older aged David Bowie. Some Musicians age like milk and others like wine, and Bowie was able to age gracefully by putting out an engaging crooning work like this
Specially liked “Dirty boys” and “Boss of me”. Showing that no matter the age, the thin white duke still has it
Abbey Road is the biggest break up album of all time. This entire album displays the songwriting, musicianship and charisma of th four biggest stars who are quite frankly sick of each other and ready for the next phase of their lives. But before the call it quits, they decide to make an unparalleled album to show that even when their friendships/partnerships are crumbling, they’re still the best band in the world.
“Come Together” is the perfect example of this. Ringos sprawling drums, Paul’s deep bass line, George’s squealing solo and outro, and John’s near nonsense imagery for peace and rhythm is such a great start. “Something” a George song, is such a romantic swirl and the middle section gives me chills everytime
Maxwells silver hammer and oh darling show Paul at his best (and sometimes worst, as John would call Maxwell “another of Paul’s granny shit) while Maxwell does have that lot tinnpan alley esque sound, the subject matter of it being the backdrop of a murdering psychopath gives it a sense of camp personality not found in his other old time timings. And “oh darling” a bellowing screaming, vocal range declaration of love and loss shows that Paul can be a master at all trades In what he does
“Octopuses Garden” used for be an instant skip, but I’ve found great joy in this simple little Ringo number (actually rotten by Mr.Starr for once). Talking of peace and love underneath the shade of an octopuses garden is a great bit of surreal storytelling, accompanied by the lads musical arrangements
“I want you She’s so heavy” is a whirlwind of musical genres (Blues, hard rock, bit of bossa nova and a proto death metal ending) that just speaks of John’s otherworldly obsession with yoko, and how it tears him up and drives him towards those multiple genres. And the last theee of so minutes with this doom waltz sweeps me away everytime
“Here comes the sun” brings us up from the dregs of the last track and we float with the acoustic guitar and vocals just chanting for the sun. And while in the heavens we hear the clarion call of the Beatles perfect harmonies on “Because “
What follows is the Abbey Road Medley. A slick collection of songs that they couldn’t find conclusions too so they just kinda jammed them all together. My personal favorite is Sun King/Mean Mr.Mustard just with th e beautiful harmonies like in because, but then goes instantly to a tale of an ornery homeless guy.
Golden slumbers, has that orchestral styling of Paul, combining his flowery arrangement and dropping a little grit in it
Carry that weight, despite being very simple, I always just took as a metaphor for all four of the lads (also love the horn call back to “never give me your money”. That no matter where life takes them, they’ll carry the weight of this group and this experince for all time. And of course “the end” with its blistering solo and rare drum set and ultimate Beatles message of love you take is equal to the love you make
Ultimately, this is just perfection. From listening to it a young age with my dad, to near obsession with it as a teenager and as someone who has lived a fairly long life at this point, I’m still finding things to connect and love about this album. A perfect send off to the biggest band in the world
I had never heard much Elliot smith, first time album, just of his untimely passing and his rather depressing music, and I had a lot of that hear, but with shades of light and quality guitar playing thst makes the troubled singer captivating
Favorite tracks are ballad of big nothing, rose parade and 2:45. The harmonies and acoustic low-fi work can strike me as very moody. If I was in a certain mood, this music could hit very hard and would feel much stronger then I do.
Really cheesy electronic music that was hard to get through. Didn’t like any of it
Highlight. In the city, higher ground
I’m a big fan of cowboy spirituals, and this is just chock full of them. “Big Iron” or New Vegas fame is always. Banger. Cool water, El Paso , and the valley were also toe tapping fun. Great album for the cowboy frontier mood
Metal is not one of my favorite genres, but can’t deny the musical stylings of the black album. From the banger of enter sandman, to my favorite sad but true (revisiting the multiple muse of addiction for the band). The whole album, even the songs that aren’t well known are well made and are the most accessible metals ever been to me. Classic album worthy of its place in music history
Highlights/: the shiznit gin and juice, and murder was the case. (Hearing spooky gangster rap like that was fantastic
Lowlights: did feel like it would get a little repetitive at times with some of the songs
Another album I had already listened all the way through, and for good reason. This is a goddamn perfect classic album in every sense of the world
Black dog and rock and roll are just absolute bangers to get you moving and dancing and grooving
Battle of evermore has big fantasy hobbit vibes (“pick up your sword and ride” “the dark lord rides in force tonight”) One of my favorites on the album and his Rowling vocals on the end is so good
Stairway to heaven is just stairway to heaven I don’t know what else to add to this absolute epic and grand song that has garnered enough attention and admiration to feel like a great tale passed down
Misty mountain hop and four sticks are hidden bangers that aren’t talked about as much but it by no means feels like filler. The album closes with the poignant going to California and the blustering blues of when the levee breaks.
Five stars all around, as perfect as you can get for an album
Wasn’t a fan of a lot of the music. Felt like a time capsule from the early 200s rock that would be on a comedy drama tv show.
