1001 Albums Summary

I like the sounds, especially the spaghetti western guitar. Really cool rhythmically, gets you into a vibe. But combine minimalism with a 20-minute piece and it kinda sounds like a Shine on You Crazy Diamond demo tape, a little half baked. I just wish it had more melody. But that’s a genre thing, these guys sound good.

Lots of cool sounds, ambient texture, pop sensibility. Like the Smiths meet ABBA. Proto Melody’s Echo Chamber.

So, so much guitar. Some songs are pretty long at the ends, but I’m all in favor of not cutting something short. Really a “loud” album in a good way. Somewhat optimistic sounding 90s rock, or at least not as depressing as their US peers.

Not big on U2 but this album had some good moments. One and Mysterious Ways are definitely highlights.

4 stars, love Stax, RIP Steve Cropper. Really good pieces ahead of its time, but this band is at its best backing vocalists, Otis, Wilson, et. al.

The only good pop punk album. More of an exception to the rule. BJA’s melodies are great.

The best funk. Sounds like Booker T and the MG’s on LSD. Phenomenal songwriting, a hopeful record. Great contrast with there’s a riot going on.

Dancy, funky, so 2010’s, I can’t believe I missed this album before?

Noisy, songs are kinda catchy. So 90s slacker DIY vibe. Def see how this was influential at the time.

Three of the best voices in country music. I was expecting the songs to sound more dated to the late 80s but was pretty surprised. Vocal harmonies out of this world. Linda might have come out on top on this one.

Lotta guitar, lotta f bombs! Slash has such good hi-gain arrangements. There’s a sharp divide between the mega hit tracks and the other tracks. I can’t tell if it’s familiarity bias or what. There are so many songs on here ingrained into music history, mega hits, that the other tracks sometimes feel out of place. The work as a whole gives a lot of context to late 80s butt metal.

Love the stereo separation. Great sounding instrument recordings. Good themes song wise. I don’t love the plotline of Tommy. This one has grown on me a lot over the years.

Great sound, def hear the McCartney/Davies influence. Honestly hadn’t listened to the Monkees before. More than a TV band.

George Martin is the 5th Beatle. I need to find this in mono.

Punk, rock, new wave. Couple radio tunes.

Need to Relisten. Total vibe, feel like he perfected the sound on 2001.

Groovy jazz funk, great vibe. Good mix of funk, bop, and afrocuban rhythm.

Songs are good but I don’t think McLaren is what makes them good. Probably better examples of NY radio shows and South African music.

Good groove throughout. Cisco and ghetto are high points. Some of the other tracks are a little long, but still a jam.

Great performance by Sinatra, but an album full of sad ballads makes for such a sleeper record. Really beautiful arrangements throughout, but not a ton of differentiation between tracks.
