1001 Albums Summary

Essential and perfect, only a couple songs might be in my regular rotation.

Like I get that it’s Radiohead but it’s just so distilled and filtered. SO BORING

I mean, fantastic. Great stuff, hugely influential. Not in my rotation though, so 4

Yeah like definitly a good time

Boy oh boy did this fill a hole in music when it came out. It was also perfectly released to coincide with America’s rediscovery of slightly less problematic Deep South white culture in the True Blood era. Every song off this guy was on the radio for 3 years. But then it got co-opted by Shondaland and HBO dramas and NBC and suddenly it was everywhere and you couldn’t walk down the street without hearing Next Girl. I know every word to every song but I can’t stand them anymore. Three stars for effort and intention.

I mean yeah like of course. Led Zeppelin. 3 might honestly be my least favorite of their catalogue but you won’t catch me complaining at all.

Does it have a couple songs that I will,. listen to any time of day and in any mood? Yes. Will I go out of my way to listen to ANYTHING on the album? No. This is solid radio/mixtape music and nothing more. Tonight Tonight remains as one of the greatest songs of the 90's (and in a more different vein, Bullet with Butterfly Wings as one of the greatest and dumbest), but other than that I don't think there's a lot sticking to the wall off of this guy.

Yeah I mean duh I was in my second year of college when this came out so it’s like it’s fucking written with sharpie on the surface of my brain. Do I love it? I sure don’t. Will it be played at my funeral of course it will but not because I chose it. No, because the sonic waves will still be traveling through my dead veins when they empty my body of fluids during the embalming process and will echo for weeks through the funeral home. This album got me through a very important time of weekly rediscovery as I learned how to drink wrong and party wrong and live wrong and dress wrong and eat wrong and love wrong and talk wrong and be wrong. It’s so important yet so far from what I want anymore. It reminds me of my most confused and pathetic self. And at the same time it was somehow my first taste for guilty nostalgia. My Fever to Tell cd was scratched and cracked from being played so much by the time I left for college so this release was the perfect chance to grasp at some pale reflection of a culturally ambitious version of myself, ripe with individuality and pubescent-cusping autonomy. I will never listen to this album again because I don’t need to. It’s buried. It’s done. I’ve moved on. We’ve all moved on. Let’s just let it die in peace and with only as much respect as it mathematically deserves. Except for Zero. That track will live forever.

Ugh. I think I was born 5 years too late to get any enjoyment out of this. Aimee Mann is fine but she’s really not for me. Never liked her. This whole album sounds like covers of Wings songs. Also I’ve never been sure if the piano player on Ally MacBeal was or wasn’t Aimee Man. Two stars.
