Although being a fan of Bowie at large I've often found it hard to get into full albums of his work, with the notable exception of Low and Ziggy Stardust which are some of my favourite albums of all time. Aladdin Sane never feels line it lives up to its predecessor or its iconic album cover. Would be a 3.5 out of 5 if half stars were an option here since I do still enjoy Bowie's sound and lyricism even if the album doesn't have huge highs for me. Lady Grinning Soul was probably my favourite since I prefer Bowie at his moody and atmospheric rather than overtly rock focused.
A really nice easy listening record. Electronic music tends not to be my thing but this was a real surprise. I was aware of the album's heavy hitter, Sexy Boy, which is still one of my favourite songs on the album. But I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the album. As I lay down just before bed to listen to this it felt like a perfect nightcap to a long day. A well produced, downtempo album with some nice bass and instrumentation. Not an album I'd reach for often but when the moment calls for it, I'll be very glad to have it there. 3.5/5 or 4/5, it depends on how I'm feeling but since I'm in the mood for this kinda music rn, I'll go for 4/5.
I had heard a couple of the songs on here before but had never listened to a full album by Sam Cooke. I had such a good time with this album, such a positive, uplifting record. Never used to be a huge fan of live albums but this might be changing my mind because the energy you could feel from both Cooke and the crowd really made this album special.
Another album that I was familiar with but had never listened to fully. It did not disappoint. The songs I was already familiar with sounded great in context, Tears dry on their own being a real highlight, and the rest of the tracks were good as well. Overall though the album tracks never did top the singles so it didn't blow me away, still a good listen so I'll give it a 4.
Not a fan of Metallica at all. I really tried to keep an open mind and give this album the benefit of the doubt but Thrash Metal like this really isn't my genre.
Such a good album. I grew up with my parents always playing The Stone Roses in the car on long trips. Good memories associated with this album. It also just slaps. The bass lines are incredible, the guitar work is equally fantastic. Dare I say, a perfect album?
An album I thought I'd love based off the stuff I'd heard. Didn't live up to it tbh. I enjoyed the concept of the album and the sci-fi theme but beyond a couple of songs (Do you realise and Yoshimi pt.1) I didn't really get into the rest of it. One that I'm glad I've listened to in full but not one I'd rush back to.
Too slow paced and not enough stand out songs on here for me but the overall atmosphere and sound was good albeit not very memorable.
Based on all the comments on this I was expecting a lot worse. It's by no means at the height of the rest of Bowie's work and isn't as boundary pushing as the other records of his on this list. However I did find quite a bit to love on it, the opening tracks (and first half of the album at large) were really fun rock tracks. The latter half did not spark joy. If I could give this a 3.5 I would but for now I'll give it a 3.
Moments of interest on here but it was painfully long and the noise elements were not to my taste at all.
I really really enjoyed this. I'm a bit of a sucker for this era of 60's music and was ready familiar with The Kinks. Had never listened to this album in full though. Lots to love however some tracks really didn't land for me and stopped me giving this a 5. Really, what were they thinking with "All my friends were there." Truly awful. Doesn't stop this from being a great but not quite perfect album.
Interesting sound and I enjoyed the experimentation and overall production of the album. Not one I'd ever reach for and listen to regularly. Would give it a 3.5 if I could but for now 3 will have to do.
Wasn't expecting much from this beyond it just being a middle of the road dad rock album but I really found myself getting it. I had a fun time with this album and would definitely listen again. 4.5
I wasn't a fan of the last Elvis Costello album this gave me. I can't say I'm a massive fan of this one but I do prefer it. It's got more life and feels brighter than the last one I listened to. Still not a massive fan of Costello's vocals or lyrics but the instrumentation is doing more for me on this record. I'm thinking 3 but that's only after a couple songs. The album feels pretty slow and doesn't have great pace.
I've never been much of a Bob Dylan fan. I think he's a great songwriter but as a performer I can take or leave him. So this 1hr 12min Dylan album was a bit much for me.
I was not expecting this from The Beach Boys. Really enjoyed it though. Some of the slower songs didn't spark joy but the more psychedelic and rock focused ones really spoke to me. I also appear to be in the minority here because I actually really enjoyed Student Demonstration Time.
It's a classic for a reason. Easy 5 stars. Not a single skip on here.
For an easy listening, background music album this was pretty good. In comparison to every other album ever released and other albums on this list, it was just okay. Inoffensive stuff that I could imagine playing over the speakers of a chain coffee shop. If I could give it a 2.5 I would but for now a 3 feels about right.
Some nice guitar work and general vibe but nothing very memorable.
A classic that I've never actually listened to in full. Unlike a lot of other albums like this, I feel like the best songs on here are the ones that got a lot of fame and air play. I can recognise how good this while also admitting that I don't think it's for me. I do like the more dramatic and intense songs but the lighter hearted stuff and the baffling I'm in love with my car did nothing for me. It feels mad but I'm thinking of a 3.5 (but I'll put a 4 since it's such a classic.)
