Hard to not go full Beavis and Butthead while listening to this album. Basically no skips, rocks so hard from start to finish. A perfect album to air guitar to
What a miracle of an album. So smooth, joyous, funky and musical through and through. Would rate a 4.5 for Girlfriend but otherwise perfect
I've always wanted to like this more than I do, but it's just kind of repetitve and slow. Beautiful for sure with a great story, but just never moved me.
Wasn't sure how this album would hold up but it's still great. Perfect stepping stone for a band bursting with ideas, sticking to tight arrangements with cool flourishes/studio effects to bring the songs more flavor. I love when an album keeps me guessing what's coming else.
Couldn't spend as much time as I wanted with this, but overall I'm not a huge Cure fan and this didn't really change my mind. I appreciate it more than I like it and can see the influence on industrial/goth that came after. Call me crazy but I like when Robert Smith writes a melody. Opening track is a banger though.
I always avoided listening to this one for some reason but it rips. Much different from the Pixies, the band is much tighter and the songs are structurally pretty straight forward.
Love seeing what a music omnivore Frank is/was. He influece is infinite.
Beautiful and haunting but slow and a little unfoucsed. Maybe something I'll grow to enjoy more as I get older? It's impossible to not compare this with Black Star, a last words artistic statement that still keels kinetic and exciting 10 years out.
You Want It Darker (tital track) is an all timer though, one of Cohen's best.
Not my favorite Radiohead but still Radiohead. A return to rock and live drums. Not really sure what the overarching theme is aside from everything is terrible and evil people are taking over everything. Not so different now as it was then.
I love the blues/gospel feel mixed with sardonic/dark lyrics. Would have given Abattoir Blues 4 stars as a standalone album but felt Lyre of Orpheus dragged a little bit. Might just need to spend more time with the full album.
Is there such thing as too much of a good thing? This album should work so well on paper, and the mix of electronic music with rock energy is a cool idea, but overall the experience feels pretty shallow and meaningless. I imagine this wold be awesome to hear nobbed off at Glastonbury or something (idk whatever you Brits say) but outside that context I felt myself wanting more.
Some bangers for sure, bags a lot in the middle & end. Not their best, not my favorite.
When I hear this album I can only wonder what happened to the other Jazz greats of the era, Roy Donk, Paul Buffano, Marcus "The Worm" Hick, and Mookie Kramer & the Eight Balls.
Bratty, loud, sometimes annoying but not without merit. I feel kinda weird for loving this as a teen and definitely don’t think it aged as well as say Dookie, but guitar parts are pretty good and I had fun relistening.
Half a point for nostalgia and for the secret “song” at the end.
Too much boomer energy for me. I listened to Small Faces Ogden Nuts Gone Flake accidentally before this which was way sillier/had a distinctly British sound I found lacking from this facsimile of white trying to sound southern. I do love Rods voice
Not for everyone but I find this album incredibly moving. No idea what the lyrics mean the singers voice is passionate and other worldly. I found myself transported to another place and time listening. Wholly unique/beautiful listening experience if you give it the chance to take over
Really taken away by the production on this album. The energy is beautifully chaotic and moves so quickly you can barely keep up. Lyrically Chuck isn’t on the same level as some of the other GOATS but when you’re discussing complex political thought in a relatable way you get pass. Would love to spend more time with this one.
First half is all classics, great production and sounds so cool to listen to. 2nd half is a chore and Snoop kind of runs of things to talk about/interesting ways to say the same thing.
Great, simple, chill album. Never was the biggest Neil fan but there's a lot of bangers on this one and it's a beautifully produced album
Wow I’ve heard of the guys for years but never gave them a listen. What a joyful, weird, timeless album. The melodies are cool, guitar solos rip. Sure they’re aping blur but at least they’re having fun doing it.
Undeniably a great album, but I find the mixing to be both muddled and maximalist to the point where it's hard to parse out all the parts. Obviously there's breathing room on the quieter songs, but I wasn't able to step into the rockers as easily as I wanted to. But also this album changed my life where I heard it as a 13 year old, so it gets a 4.
Another surprise discovery. Frank usually leaves me feeling a little cold and I grow tired of hearing crooner music after about 10 minutes, but it was hard to feel mad listening to this. The arrangements are rich, the recordings stellar and Frank sounds like he's having the time of his life. Of course it feels a little cheesy, but that feeling of being in love should be. I can but think of the generations of people who have swung their loved ones around the dance floor, cheek to cheek, to You Make Me Feel So Young. While the music certainly is of it's time, you can't deny the timeless of the sentiments. In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they're only made of clay. But SFSL is here to stay (sorry)
Great collection of songs that sound really good together. I could see this becoming a favorite of mine if I spent more time with it. SHOTR is my favorite Byrds album and this one feels like a cool bridge between the folkie jangle and alt-country sounds that would follow. I want to give it a 7, since there's no half stars I'll be generous and round up
Works pretty well as a concept album. Some songs are stronger than others and a lot of themes can feel a bit repetitve, but Jazmine voice is strong and her passion is real.
This is good rock and roll uh, music?
Gonna try to be unbiased on about this as I love Steely Dan. This was never my favorite of there, I likely scoffed at it due to it being one of their more "main stream" albums (aka it has the most radio hits on it). But man it's hard to deny just how much fun this album is. It grooves so hard, the licks are sticky as hell, and it's nice to hear the Dan sound so loose. Doesn't quite hold up to their later album, and some of the songs are a little schlocky, but the highs are high and the lows still sound like a good time. Dirty work might just be their best work and I hate to admit that I like hearing someone other than Fagen on vocal (Palmer, you sweet Angel...). It's cool if you don't like em I know we'll get along just fine.
FUN FUN FUN. Clever album that takes you almost literally on a journey through time and space. Sounds like the Beach Boys if Brian Wilson was part man/part machine.
used to be an album I really enjoyed, but it didn't quite hit as hard this time. The production is thin, the songs feel repetetive, like it lost it's bite. If I'm being objective this record is just ok. 2.5 but rounded to 3 for nostalgia
Really fun sounding album with great energy. Missing strong melodies and it feels like something that's more interesting than good, but I liked it over all.
Good old fashioned rock record. Nothing fancy but the energy is greatand it definitely punches above its weight.
I'll just never really get this ablum. Have tried many times through the year, but I just don't love the production or song writing. I get what they were going for and can see how they were influenential but it's not for me. 2-stars for Disorder and She's Lost Control but the rest is forgetable
The fact that this exists is a miracle. The fact that it's good doesn't hurt.
The shape of punk to come. Wish I could understand the words better.
Has some fun ideas but doesn't really stand out amongst other gems of the 60s. The studio musicians are the best part which is saying something.
