Interesting lyrics, fun songs to listen to
Very nice, i loved steady rollin man specifically
Found it to be quite disharmonious and sometimes haphazardly thrown together. There are some songs I like, but I struggle to find the album overall enjoyable to listen to. I've never been a fan of the beatles, to be honest, but this hasn't made me into one either.
Too high - Very funky first track. I had to get used to his voice for a second, but I quickly started to feel the funk and move my body along the rhythm.
Visions - nice tonal shift, I think it's a pretty well written song, with enough variation to keep it interesting. Balancing on the verge of easy and attentive listening.
Living for the city - longest track on the album. Really love the vocals and bass on this track. The drums have this rolling along type vibe which I like. Not a fan of the synth chorus melody, but it's not a major part of the song.
When the song devolves into this soundscape of a man getting arrested, it kind of took me out if it, but I understand the meaning.
Golden lady - easy listening, nice rhythm, GREAT organ piece
Higher ground - YES, just yes.
Jesus children of america - pretty okay, but not super special.
All in love is fair - least favorite so far, feels a bit contrived. Nice vocals though
Dont you worry bout a thing - this one feels cheeky in a good way, it's a fun song, but not my favorite.
He's misstra know-it-all - good song, strong vocals, but not as deep as the first few songs that I liked more
Black mirror - really not for me, too much reverb and anxious rhythm guitar
Keep the car running - absolutely not a fan of the clap-along type beat, to me this type of song feels simplistic
Neon bible - mumbling vocals not my favorite but it's a more interesting song than the first two. For me mainly due to the drums, with that intermittently returning snare
Intervention - the organ is an interesting choice, it feels like the song resolves slowly but the payoff when the drums start is okay. This song seems a bit more interesting. Overall I still don't really like it.
Black wave - female vocals are more appealing than the male lead singer. Underwhelming song. I really dislike the reverb they use on the vocals later in the song, it feels disjointed.
Ocean of noise - first song I actually like, the laid back drums feel coherent to me. Still don't really like the lead singers voice, but it does feel like it shows itself well in this song.
The well and the lighthouse - anxiety inducing song, skipped
Antichrist television blues - sappy, predictable song, nonsensible lyrics
Windowsill - this guy sings a lot about things he doesn't want to do anymore. Then don't do them.
No cars go - and then there's this banger, out of nowhere, of course I heard it before but I had no idea it was from this band. I mean, how can the rest of the album be so unattractive to me but this one song sounds so great. Who's to say.
My body is a cage - pretty good, slow pace is a nice change from no cars go. I like the vocals, choir and organ in this one.
Uh-oh love comes to town - fun rhythm, fun lyrics. The steel drum is magnetic. It's a simple song, but in a very good way
New feeling - not a fan of the vocals nor lyrics, the rest is okay but not groundbreaking. Easy listen.
Tentative decisions - nice cowbell, vocals again not my favorite. Snare drum is fun, cadence in this song is different and interesting.
Happy day - very annoying vocals, to me, the random high note in between. Again the rest is okay, but not great.
Who is it? - cooorny lyrics, lame love song. But I do like the rhythm guitar en decisive drums
No compassion - great lyrics, resonates with me, i think this song is the best so far. But still not a fan of the vocals. Wow, an actual bridge. The guitarist gets some room to explore, which pays off well.
The book I read - na na na ooh ooh aah, you are the book I read bla bla. Just not interesting to me. But, the song itself is fun to listen to. The vocals are okay in this one. I like the piano the most.
Dont worry about the government - positive lyrics, kinda funny honky tonky ahh type beat at the beginning. I don't like the loud snare, the drums in general I don't vibe with. Okay song in general.
First week/last week - boring lyrics, always about women and stuff. But fun beat, I love the guiro in the percussion. Guitar is kinda standard. Vocals do have a nice cadence, the high notes fit well in this song. Saxophone is a vibe.
Psycho killer - nice bassline beginning. I know this song, of course, but wasnt aware it was from this album. Best song till now, honestly. Most interesting variety between sections in the song.
Pulled up - positive lyrics, this one feels like the rhythm of the vocals are more important than the content. The guitar is simple but fun. But overall not very impressed with this song. It fits well as a last song for what for me was a quite mediocre album.
America Is Waiting - it's brian eno, i expected weirdness. It's not a comfortable listen, but it's interesting.
Mea Culpa - weird, like it shouldn't be considered music. But it's interesting, in a way. Percussion is really good.
Regiment - ooh, its nice. The drums, bassline, guitar. Feels very ahead of its' time for 1981. Saved for later.
Help Me Somebody - very cool, carribean feel in the rhythm. A little bit nervous, but interesting. I love the variety between songs.
The Jezebel Spirit - funky and danceable, but doesn't resolve into something that I find satisfying in the end. I don't really love the sort of megaphone type vocals.
Very Very Hungry (formerly Qu'ran) - laid back, interesting percussion, a bit disjointed in melody and vocals, but interesting. Again feels ahead of its' time for 1981.
Moonlight in Glory - nervous percussion, but interesting variety in instruments. Funny bassline and melody. I like the use of such a variety of instruments. But, not my favorite song by far.
The Carrier - interesting vocals, interesting song overall, not much to say as it wasn't too special either.
A Secret Life - bit of a nervous song, didn't really hit me in a good way, the vibe is ominous. My least favorite of this album.
Come with Us - strange song, sounds more like an OST of a weird video game. Not totally uninteresting, but not appealing either.
Mountain of Needles - kind of lacklustre ending to a strange album, but not totally unbefitting. Still interesting listen.
fun album, but enough songs I didn't like to remove 1 star rating. I loved the experimental ending, akin to some flink poyd
Really nice, would listen to again
I really cannot judge if this is good music, as I personally just don't like this genre. But within the genre it could be good.
This is obviously one of the best albums ever made. Although it also has weaker points, it's still a 5/5.
Im probably too depressed for cohen. His voice is iconic of course and I do love some songs, but overall it's not for me
fun listening, and some unexpected deeper lyrics too
Quite an easy listen, but often found the vocals and piano disappointing
Yeah, myeah, not really my thing. Not the worst to listen to either. I do really love some Joy Division songs, but this album was not great for me.
convincingly fun album, not life changing
Big fan of this album, great lyrics and good beats.
I really do like blues music, but at the end of the album I was kinda done with it too
