Obviously it starts with a hammer, truly iconic song, but then I have to admit I got lost in the album, a few songs stood out but in the end it all felt like the same one to me ... Probably cause I can't understand the lyrics with his voice and strong accent, I bet it didn't help. At least it's coherent and the vocals/guitar solos are amazing.
Cover : Iconic of course, devilish as rock music is
I'm not used to the Beach Boys except the classics, so I cannot tell that for sure, but it definitely feels a bit less cheery than expected. I still love the layered music style, songs don't feel like they're songs, they're more like sound universes.
Cover : I love the visual, it's so different from the rest of their covers, and suggest fatalism/doom topics (though the actual music isn't).
I'm not into this kind of Jazz - I prefer Big Band Jazz and songs I'm already familiar with (Whiplash songs for example that have strong energy) - so it's hard to rate this one. I find it monotonous, and, sorry Sebastian, but it sounds like elevator music to me. I cannot hang on to anything (lyrics, chorus, pattern) to identify it or remember anything.
Obviously Thelonious Monk must be top of the class for Jazz lovers, I've heard his name many times, but I'm not trained and savy enough to care or understand what's great his music or his skills.
Cover : Clever and effective, I like the color tone too.
When it starts with RESPECT you know you're in for a good time !
Overall jazzy and smooth mood, great vocals. I have to admit I had higher expectations, it's hard to tell songs apart after the first one...
I read in a review about how in this era songs were often sung by many artists, I felt that heavily as this seems more like a showcase of an amazing voice rather than particularly great songs or lyrics.
Cover : Pretty, I like the cool font
This album triggered a deep reflexion on what I appreciate in Music and how to approach these reviews. Are artists interprets/actors or do they own their art ? If a singer sings generic songs really well, is it good music or good singing ? I'm just rumbling nonsense at this point.
I'll be using this template from now on to help me structure the whole thing :
What I liked : Amazing voice, overall great production
What I didn't like : Generic songs, the lenght, lack of theme
Unmissable tracks : ???
Short personnal view : I understand that in this era, people were used to a catalog of songs free for all to interpret. However lyrics and their link to the artist are important to me, here I couldn't care about anything because of this. Also 3 hours ?? That's not an album it's more of an attempt at a compilation, so besides the point of this list...
Rating : 4/10
Who cares about my reviews anyway ? I'll rate based on how much I enjoyed it and screw it :)
Few BANGERS on this one, amazing dad rock, starts and ends really strong. Overall nice riffs, ideal length, loved it !
Cover : I had never seen it, but it's sublime. I've read that it just looked cool to the photographer Ethan Russel and the band, so there's no actual symbolism or meaning other than what you want to believe, but it's just inonic !
Not my kind of rock ! I understand the importance of this album, but it's too weird for me (the piano and jazzy tones especially). I even had to skip parts as it really disturbed me. To each their own !
Cover : I've seen it a thousand times, of course it's one of the most iconic of all time. It's brilliant and matches the overall mood !
I mean it's not bad but it's not outstanding either, I'm not sure how this is in this ranking. And yes I agree it feels like Disney songs (because he made them) so not the best pieces of music ever. I was working while listening and compeletely forgot the music was on, which I feel is telling.
Cover : Kind of boring, nice color
Meh, really went over my head
Cute songs with a lot of variety, one or two great ones !
Cover : Love it, very original and makes sense with the overall tone !
No that into Grunge, few good ones but overall not my thing !
Cover : Good one !
Very smooth and catchy tunes, the album flows very easily but the singer's voice starts to be redundant and annoying in the end. Of course one huge hit that gives it more rythm but it's also not my style ...
Cover : Like the font and style, not very original though !
Really struggled on this one, when I'm not into the music I don't want to go into the lyrics, therefore I kind of slacked... This felt like 1 very long song.
Cover : Like the collage and influences !
Yeah I was not fcking with this one, ca tourne en rond, getting bored real fast with more than an hour of the same songs. You cannot stay on the same shouting tone for an hour, who can listen to this fully without having a seizure ? Trying to do and say way too much.
Cover : It's not it
Well not again, don't get me wrong it's not awful but it very very ordinary
Cover : Really original, like the idea
I mean great album, good vocals and lyrics, not much to say
Cover : It's ok
