I’m sure there is some historical musical importance to why this album is included in the list. I don’t usually jive with bluesy rock. But I swallowed this one down okay.
Ball and Biscuit and Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine were two songs that stood out.
Would I listen to Elephant again? By myself, probably not… but in a group setting or listening party, where I could talk more about the album with people in-person? Hell yeah.
I really hate the saying, "They sure don't make music like they used to."
But I feel like this is one of those albums where I could literally feel myself sinking into a tan shag rug carpet in a basement somewhere in middle America sans 1975 and listening to this album on a record player. There's a recorded density, canned air, that I've mostly recognized being held in suspension from albums recorded in the 70s.
Listening to Simple Man while writing this review and learning about the airplane crash that halted Lynyrd Skynyrd's recording career in '77... sure is an experience and might make you cry a little. Thank that it wasn't Free Bird...

Definitely worth a relisten and will be keeping in my music library.

I kept thinking about how I’m reminded of Carrie Brownstein’s vocal performances in Sleater Kinney as I listened to Tom Petty’s singing.
Nice folksy album. I was reminded of Iron & Wine for a few songs.
The first album that I actually wanted to listen to again. (In fact, I listened to it four times in a row.)
Jump and Panama are flawless, no notes.
I’ll Wait was the song that grew on me the most; not to say that it became my favorite. It’s in the bottom half. But the heavy synth opening reminded me of a Journey song.
I would also love to hear a big band swing cover of Hot For Teacher.
Started off strong with The Headmaster Ritual. One of my favorites.
Listened to the album twice in a row… but stopped at Mest Is Murder on the second go-around… that song was… really tough to chew and swallow… no pun intended. I was listening to this song in particular while I was standing in the freezer… so the song felt a little extra jarring.
I liked this album more than I thought I was going to. Not that I didn’t think I would like it. The Smiths are a great band. I just came in without any expectations — Van Halen had me on a music high — and I enjoyed listening.
Good album. Don't know if I'd listen to it again, but it's Beck. So I can't bat it.
