Graceland by Paul Simon

There's no doubt - it's a great album. Paul Simon and I have had kind of a weird relationship over the years. Everyone says I would *love* Simon. And for whatever reason it just doesn't fully click. I appreciate it - I see it - I recognize it. But it's just missing something for me. It's great though.

This is my 11th listen to it. I figure if I'm going to listen to albums everyday - maybe it's not such a bad idea to find a community that enjoys it too. It's an all-time great album. The first track, 'Funeral For a Friend' has a very special meaning to me. My Uncle Bobby (who passed) taught me how to play the piano - later we worked on a lot of music together. He had recorded a version of this song and it was true to form. It's impossible not to think of him - and so when I go back for this record it's usually knowing I'm gonna get a bit emotional. It's also so incredibly fitting to be given this album to review first for this website/challenge. Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Saturday Night are all time great songs of his. But really top to bottom they've all got their purpose on the album. They fit in different ways. As of writing I have ranked 524 albums since 3/2/2026. I've got this at #6. An easy five star.

Arrival by ABBA
Oct 15 2026

I love all types of music, older, newer - harder, softer. But I'm just not sure why I've never been able to get into ABBA. It resonates with a large crowd - I wish I got it. I'll continue to listen, I'll continue to try to be open. I just don't see it. There's so much great music from the mid 70's, this certainly isn't bad. So many bands and genres light me up when I listen to it - ABBA has always been flat. No disrespect, I can hear it and appreciate it. I just can't get into it.

Definitely Maybe by Oasis

I've been putting off Oasis for a really long time. Today's the day. It's good. I'm not sure how to say it - if you to measure the band and the album in size - I would not say it's "bigger than the Beatles" but it's good. FWIW I just looked it up - he was high when he said it and regrets it. So maybe I should let him off the hook after all these years. The album is still good. Super high quality around all the other similar albums in that era.

Here Are the Sonics by The Sonics
Oct 18 2026

I love modern music but when bands are this tight without quantization or a click track - it just feels different. They're very much in sync but there's also a looseness within it. This may be one of my favorite records from the mid 60's. I mean I love a lot of these records but this - well this is the most Beatles-esque. It's a direct precursor to rock music. It was normal for the time, so I don't wanna ding them for doing all covers - they do them great - but I'm curious if they ever wrote their own music. Definitely a great album - definitely worth the listen.

I Against I by Bad Brains

It didn't really resonate with me. It's not bad. It clearly has an audience and it's well executed. I just was unable to pull anything from it.
