I really want to like Zappa. He was a great guy and an ace guitarist.....but I can't hack his humour/lyrics/delivery.
Zappa sure is a zany guy. His music is quite impressive stylistically but his lyricism is goofy and satirical to the point where it kind of gets annoying. It’s like the person who tells one funny joke and thinks they have 8 more in them. Zappa has musical talent but for me this albums misses the mark of something id want to hear again. 5.2/10
Frank has already gotten his props from the O.G. list makers. This to me is an unnecessary inclusion. I didn't like the Zappa heard previously and I don't like this either. I do have more respect and appreciation for his artistry and contributions to music than a lot of this other crap people have been picking though. While I don't want this or care for it, I get why someone would push for more.
Frank Zappa is interesting to me, but this started off rough. I’m not sure a lot of the early songs have aged well, and the potty humor detracted from my enjoyment. There was a lot to like instrumentally, but I didn’t love it as a whole.
This seems definitely the most approachable of the albums we’ve heard from the list… and sonically it is pretty interesting, definitely doing a lot more to demonstrate craftsmanship while not being entirely experimental. What keeps holding me back is the lyrical writing isn’t particularly clever, it just comes off as juvenile. Most of it is a miss for me, though Uncle Remus is the closest where it comes to working as there is a fun/joy in the vibe that I can more easily engage with. Overall, it was good to hear a different aspect of his catalog, but Frank is just not my cup of team.
It is such a weird and eccentric album. Thankfully, it was short. I don't see myself revisiting it.
I feel like a curmudgeon whenever I have to review a Frank Zappa album. I just don't get it. I think he's highly overrated. Technically he's a very good guitar player, but if a good guitar player plays stuff that isn't enjoyable to listen to is he really a good guitar player? 2 stars, because it's short and more listenable than most Zappa, and I actually liked the song Apostrophe'.
Wait so I was assuming this would be like a totally average one, just a normal Zappa, but I absolutely despised this. I couldn’t listen past like three songs for some reason. Really bad one. I know that’s personal but I can’t get past that soooo
