Popular Reviews

Alive 2007 by Daft Punk

Raised the bar on live electronic music. Phenomenal album from start to finish. Daft Punk's ability to recontextualize iconic motifs is unparalleled. Greater than the sum of it's parts.

Elk-Lake Serenade by Hayden

Chill indie folk, but I would prefer something with a little more instrumentality, like J Mascis' solo stuff.

The Infamous by Mobb Deep

Solid recc. Painfully obvious the published list is severely lacking in lots of areas, chief among them hip hop.

Go Farther In Lightness by Gang of Youths

The 2010s were absolutely lousy with albums that sound like this.

Norther by Ex-Easter Island Head

The first track sounded like the music that was used to calm down autistic children. But guess what? I'm not a child anymore. When the titular track started, I was more on board with the direction the album was going. I definitely appreciate being exposed to this, interesting album.

Mad Dogs & Englishmen by Joe Cocker
Sep 22 2026

Is it a good live album? Totally. Do I think it's seminal and necessary listening? Not really.

A Deeper Understanding by The War On Drugs
Sep 23 2026

Saw a lot of reviews calling this "dad rock" and I had to ask the dads in my life if that was accurate. They set me straight. I was never a big fan of music like this, but it's fine.

Dilate by Ani DiFranco
Sep 24 2026

So 90s it hurts. Transported me back to living in the IE, the kind of thing that would be playing in someone else's car.

I And Love And You by The Avett Brothers
Sep 25 2026

Not to be dismissive, but any music that was chosen as "Starbucks iTunes pick of the week" is not essential listening lmao

TRON: Legacy by Daft Punk
Sep 26 2026

I love Daft Punk, but this movie soundtrack with Disney plastered on the front of it doesn't deserve to be in this book more than R.A.M., Discovery or even Alive 2007. I do really like talking about this soundtrack, though. I even liked the newer one with Nine Inch Nails.

Go Farther In Lightness by Gang of Youths

Is Ellipsis by Psyche Origami
Sep 30 2026

Sometimes the production feels simple but effective, other times it can come across as totally indulgent. I like the variety on this album. Very emblematic of the early 2000s, straight up just reminds me of Tony Hawk and Adult Swim. Really solid listen, the lyrics are the star here for sure. 4.5/5

Solid recc. Painfully obvious the published list is severely lacking in lots of areas, chief among them hip hop.

Flood by They Might Be Giants
Oct 03 2026

Incredible pick. Probably TMBG most consistent album. Great for road tripping. It's hard to put into words why I enjoy this album so much. It's like Oingo Boingo but made by your sweet uncle instead of your creepy one.

Oct 05 2026

Totally fine modern rap album. Standing on the shoulders of giants. I think that hip-hop is tragically underrepresented on the real list, but I can think of a couple other albums that should probably go on there before this one.

Blue Is The Colour by The Beautiful South
Oct 06 2026

Pop driven coffee shop bluesy wannabe folksy BULLSHIT. This overly smarmy feel good crap makes me sick to my stomach.

Get Fucked by The Chats
Oct 08 2026

Musically not very innovative, but so emblematic of post-covid punk rock. Just some blokes singing about what they see in the world, and the world is pretty shitty right now. It's not about being edgy for the sake of it, its that we're all anxious, depressed and stressed the fuck out. On top of all that shit, the price of smokes is going up again!! Great recommendation, I was familiar with the Chats before this, but never sat down and listened to one of their albums. What a ripper!

Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt
Oct 09 2026

Aged way better than most ska from the 90s. Honestly surprised this isn't on the real list.

Auri by Auri
Oct 10 2026

Certainly interesting.

Alive 2007 by Daft Punk

MY WOMAN by Angel Olsen
Oct 12 2026

A lot more interesting than I expected it to be. Solid recc!

Spanners by The Black Dog
Oct 13 2026

Predates Homework by 2 years, so that's pretty cool.

A Live One by Phish
Oct 14 2026

Lyrics are infantile. For a jam band, I was surprised at the lack of musicality. I thought the whole point of jam bands was to show off improv prowess? There are some solos with interesting arpeggios and licks, but the bulk is boomer blues scales that the crowd erupts for. These tracks are so predictable I honestly don't know how this would impress you. Maybe if you've never heard guitarwork post 1940? The energy of the live album is rancid. Call and response from the band to the crowd is always a half beat late. I can tell how caucasian the audience without even looking.

Stories by Avicii
Oct 15 2026

Introduction to Avicii for me. My first impression is this sounds like the music that would play at the gym last decade. After listening to the rest of the album, it's just way too poppy for me. I know this is meant to be upbeat background/danceable music but the lyrics are so trite that I eyerolled a few times. Like, I love 90s trance but I don't think that it's required listening or anything, haha.

No Balance Palace by Kashmir
Oct 16 2026

Actually pretty surprising! Some strokes, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, even Franz Ferdinand. Bands like Kashmir are why Bloc Party sold records. Cool stuff!

Oct 30 2026

"This isn't music, it's art." Holy fuck, if that doesn't put every single negative review on this website into perspective. Regarding the album in question, it's really interesting. The concept is the star here, but the production is very intriguing. The way it presents emotional content as neutral is really cool. Is it happy? Melancholic? Is that nostalgia I'm feeling? Is it regret? I understand not enjoying this album. It certainly lends itself well to "music elitism" or whatever issue you have with someone taking interest in music as an artistic medium beyond "music to listen to in the car."

How to Operate With a Blown Mind by Lo Fidelity Allstars
Oct 31 2026

Some of the tracks (especially on the latter half) are very Gorillaz. The attitude here is infectious, too. I don't know how often I would throw this album on, but it's pretty fun. I could see myself throwing this on as background music for a Cyberpunk TTRPG campaign.

Sports by Huey Lewis & The News
Nov 01 2026

Hard to take this album seriously in a post American Psycho world. Shame, really.

Ida Con Snock by Michael Hurley
Nov 02 2026

Glad to be exposed to an artist I'm not familiar with, but I am definitely in the "we don't need anymore folk" camp.

Fashion Nugget by CAKE
Nov 03 2026

Evocative of a certain era in America where being genuine or earnest was uncool and everything started to have layer upon layer of irony. Aside from being a time capsule to the late 90s, I don't know that this is required listening. That said, I do really like Cake and this album.
