One Hot Minute

Squeezed between classic albums Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication this record, On Hot Minute is a perfect example of a major letdown of a great band. On this album The Red Hot Chili Peppers sound like a cheap softer copy, uninspired, mediocre copy of themselves. A bit like Crazy Town on Butterfly, but that is 4 years later. The "best" songs are the singles "Warped", "My Friends" and "Aeroplane", but even those are forgettable in the RHCP discography. The other songs are uninteresting and some are even really bad ("Deep Kick", "Coffee Shop", "One Big Mob", "Tearjerker" and "Transcending"). All their other albums from "Freaky Styley" till "I'm with You" are better than this one. Even the band itself does not like it as none of the songs have been played live for several years. A big disappointment from a great band.

Wow, this album really WAS a departure from RHCP's funk sound. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's still there to a certain extent (you could never fully erase their funk), but it's much less sonically dominant. Dave Navarro's signature is apparent; this definitely leans in a Jane's Addiction direction. I liked their psychedelic leaning hard rock sound here, but I'll be honest, I was definitely missing the heavy funk. A good album, but I don't think it supersedes the other two RHCP that are already on the book side of the project.

Surprisingly great to me! My Friends was surprisingly sweet and I really dug Walkabout, but the whole album was a treat.

Wow, somewhat shocking to remember how good and cool these cats were, before the years of utter lameness that were to follow. One could say, cynically, that it’s better because it sounds more like Jane’s Addiction. And maybe Rubin was out sick for a few of these songs. Or because Kiedis was back on the smack. There’s more texture and soul and more diversity of tone (see “Aeroplane” and “Walkabout” among others). It’s also less slick than BSSM. Good non-obvious call, recommender. One dug far more than one expected to.

I have some good memories associated w this album

Not the most mainstream album of RHCP. And maybe for a reason. The songs aren't that memorable or catchy. The outlier is probably Aeroplane. I do still like the funky bass and guitar they do

Almost five stars, but I heard this so many times when it came out that I’m a little tired of it still.

RHCP's prior album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, is part of the original list and became one of my favorite albums ever. One Hot Minute follows the same alternative funk trend but sounds more like a contrived continuation rather than a natural creative expression. I'm torn because I enjoy the sound and it's catchy, but I wanted more political, edgy songs. At some point, it seemed like the RHCP enjoyed saying the word "fuck". Several songs may not have been political but were worthwhile: "Tearjerker" wasn't like anything I've heard from the RHCP and was the lead vocalist's reaction to Kurt Cobain's death. "Aeroplane" is about using music as a refuge, which I think we can all relate to if we're doing this project. "Walkabout" refers to the Australian Aboriginal ceremony. "Pea" was written by Flea, who was bullied a lot as a child yet recognized bullies weren't worth his time. And "Shallow Be Thy Game" shames religious fundamentalism, which I'm always into. Oh and, I always enjoy a cute album title in relation to the artist's name.

I thought I'd already rated this- as other reviewers have noted this is an average album by a great band. If it was by an average band it would be a great album by them.

Imagine the sound of a RHCP album. This is what this is. It's exactly what you expect. It's not bad but it's not good. It just exists. Also too long by 20 minutes. My personal rating: 3/5 My rating relative to the list: 3/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.

Haven't listened to this album in full probably since it came out. When that happened, I did not like it but after time, this feels like the vintage Peppers that I liked.

I always enjoy some RHCP. This is not one of their best but still pretty good. None of the songs are real memorable, but My Friends and Aeroplane did sound vaguely familiar. Standouts: My Friends, Aeroplane, Tearjerker, Warped, Front Kick 3.5

Better than I remembered but not essential

I went through a brief RHCP phase, but it didn't last long. This album is mostly tolerable, but not something I'll listen to again. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.

Estilo típico del grupo con mezcla de estilos en diferentes temas. Entre pop-punk-rock. Divertido de escuchar. Seguro que mejor en directo que en el propio disco.

I don't feel that this is the Red Hot Chili Peppers that should make the list. I mean, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is the closest to an album that should make the list. This is one of those examples where the line-up is a lot better than the album is. Navarro joining Flea & Chad Smith should have made some devastating songs together. It is definitely hinted on songs like "Warped." But just like every other RHCP album, every song that makes you go "yeah, that was cool" they put out something like "Aeroplane", which is just... dumb. A few songs just feel like filler (looking at you, "Pea"). I wish this line-up had stayed together longer. Their work together could have progressed. But instead Navarro just got caught up in drugs (again) and the band got John Frusciante (again). So thew album seems like a bit of an aberration. The high points are pretty cool, but songs like "Aeroplane" and "One Big Mob" are completely skippable. And that's not good. Top tracks: "Warped," "Walkabout," "My Friends,"

The brief substitution of Navarro certainly moved their sound around a bit. Still very much a Chili Peppers album, and no hate here for that. But nothing about this one stands particularly high for me either.

RHCP aren't very good at the best of times and One Hot Minute doesn't do much to change that, someone offering up one of their less successful albums for <reasons>. My Friends is good, the rest exhibits all the hallmarks of why they're annoying, just none of the tracks apart from Aeroplane are really known. 2.

Yeah this is certainly an RHCP album. Better than "Blood Sugar Sex Magic", but so is committing arson.

Kiedis really is a terrible vocalist

I bought this CD as an 11 year old after liking Aeroplane on the radio and knowing rhcp was a band to like, but was annoyed at how much filler there was, even compared to other 90s radio rock CDs I was buying at the time. Time has not aged it well -- the funk bass is solid but so corny, the Janes Addiction style guitars don't fit at all, and his voice is a tough listen. The songs are bad, like, just rip offs of themselves, 90% of the album is shooting for Another Under the Bridge and missing wildly.

It's very rare when something meets your expectations exactly. 0 stars if I could.

Since that book with those words about that relationship the chilli peppers have given me the ick and I couldn’t get past that. One star for the ick
