Animals
Album Summary

This album has been submitted by a user and is not included in any edition of the book.

Animals is the tenth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 21 January 1977, by Harvest Records and Columbia Records. Pink Floyd produced it at their new studio, Britannia Row Studios, in London throughout 1976. The album continued the long-form compositions that made up such previous works as Meddle (1971) and Wish You Were Here (1975). A lyrical departure from Pink Floyd's previous albums, Animals is a concept album that focuses on the sociopolitical conditions of mid-1970s Britain. Tension within the band during production culminated in the firing of the keyboardist, Richard Wright, two years after the album's release. The cover, conceived by the bassist and lead songwriter, Roger Waters, and designed by their long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson, shows an inflatable pig floating between two chimneys of Battersea Power Station. Pink Floyd released no singles from Animals but promoted it through the In the Flesh tour. Waters' agitation with audiences during this tour inspired their next album, The Wall (1979). Animals reached number 2 in the UK and number 3 in the US. It initially received mixed reviews, but gained more favourable reviews in later years, and is considered one of Pink Floyd's best works.

Animals was not on the original list??? WTF. Amazing album. Some of Gilmour's best guitar work. 5 stars.

I love all iterations of Pink Floyd equally, be it prog or art or psych. I guess I’m just a fanboy. But this album is my favorite. Not necessarily their best, but my favorite. It soars the highest and speaks most profoundly to me, detailing in such frightening and beautiful clarity the dark heart of man, and how that darkness only increases when systematized. Unlike the ending of Animal Farm, however, this album ends with a glimmer of hope: β€œyou know that I care what happens to you, and I know that you care for me, too.”

Excellent choice. Not one that immediately comes to mind when I think of Pink Floyd, but highly listenable and with a well-executed concept. A somewhat self-indulgent use of spacey keyboards and studio effects wears thin at points, but there's a lot to enjoy here. Uneasy and cynical, but fascinating stuff. Fave Songs: Pigs (Three Different Ones), Dogs

lol, adding a Pink Floyd album to the user list. All the music in the world to choose from, and you pick a band that had FOUR albums in the book. 2/5.

Not as good as Wish You Were Here, but this is my vote for second-best Floyd album of the 70s.

I constantly bicker with myself over whether I prefer Animals or Wish You Were here. One comes from such a deeply personal place of loss and hope, the other lashes scathingly outward on capitalist rule. Both have some of the best prog rock to ever be made. Maybe they don't need to fight. Maybe both of these albums are kissing each other sloppy style.

Though i don't think Roger's writing & delivery is as consistent and interesting as other Pink Floyd releases in this time period, this is still a great album and it is deep enough to submerge yourself in a real energy. The guitar work is fabulous and catchy, and there are enough moments where it all shines brightly together.

A classic, by a band with plenty of albums on the list, but this is probably the best of their work that isn't already there

If I were to note a missing Pink Floyd album from the list so far, it would have been this one. My older brother had this one (as well as Dark Side of the Moon), and I was fascinated by the cover. I assumed for a long time that it was a painting of an imaginary place. My jaw dropped the first time I saw a picture of the real thing in London. Despite that, I wasn't so in to the music of it at the time, as I was 9, and nothing here is as catchy as "Money." Still, there is a lot I really like about this album these days, and it was so good to fill in this gap.

I really like this album and always have but have to admit I lose a little love for it when I read how little effort they put into it. I guess it goes to show that we just project our own feelings on these songs, they threw them together just to get an album out with little thought, then we analyze them to death and put meaning to them that the artists hadn't even considered. I am not saying they didn't put thought into the animal farm comparisons and song lyrics, I am just saying they didn't put as much thought into it before as we all do after.

My favourite album of all time. The only reason I did not submitted this album was that there were already other Pink Floyd albums, but I am so glad someone else choose it.

This is a childhood nostalgia one for me. My dad had the cd for this and I downloaded it onto my iPod touch 4 and dogs has always been one of my fav long songs ever. Everything else is also great, perfect songwriting about how oppressive capitalism and industrialization can be.

Their best album and the album that got me into music. I still remember the first time I heard the vocals on Sheep transition into a synth, mimicking the bleat of a sheep, and realized that music is more than just fun bleeps and bloops. I've heard this probably close to a 100 times already, and it hasn't grown old or stale. A masterpiece. Thanks for submitting.

The rock and roll tour we took in London lined us up to take a picture of the smoke stacks on the cover. Neat. Pink Floyd at Pink Floyd’s finest

This, Meddle, and Saucerful of Secrets could all easily have their rightful place on the list.

Pigs, Dogs, Sheep... It's really a classic but not quite as good as the two preceding albums (Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here). But it is still a great listen. 4.5/5

Not their most popular or their best but one of the best prog rock bands of all time do what they do best here with great guitar work, slow deep rhythms and fantastic lyrics that bring it all together. Hard not to enjoy a great album from one of the best bands. 8.4/10

I consider Animals the fourth or fifth best album of Pink Floyd. Then again it is a damn good piece of rock music with a nice lyrical concept. None of the songs really stand out, but if you listen to it as a whole, you will not be disappointed.

Alarmingly short for prog. Best front cover. Very surprised it wasn't on the main list. The cover has been turned into luxury flats for terrible people.

Pink Floyd’s underrated album, I actually prefer this over the wall, but would stick it behind DSOTM and what you were here. Worth place on the list, but just behind their masterpiece albums,

Ok, so yes it is a great album but overall I think I have it #6 for Pink Floyd.

Not as immediate or striking as other Floyd LPs, but still an immaculately-instrumented album with technical prowess to spare. The symbolism does seem a bit on the nose, but with musicianship this good I don't particularly care.

As Pink Floyd (who I like) goes I feel like this is one of their lighter-weight entries, though it certainly has its moments.

That's Pink Floyd alright - looooong, eloquent, somewhat pretentious and very skilled. But does that automatically deserve 5 stars? Or 4 even? Nah.

I wonder if bands get to a point where they realise that their not really adding anything to their cannon. I guess they're still adding to their bank balance. Didn't need more pink Floyd on the list.

It's a very classic Pink Floyd sound, with maybe a bit more Floyd than usual. Just enough cowbell. Some people consider this a masterpiece of theirs. My personal tastes defer slightly. I consider this a 'mood' album.

For my taste, it was too experimental to be Pink Floyd. It worked in the background while I was doing other activities, but that made it go almost unnoticed.

Yay, more Pink Floyd. Animals isn't an essential listen, although Pigs (Three Little Ones) is actually pretty good, just not enough to lift it over a 2/5. Maybe the most overrated band ever.

If the original list couldn’t convince me to change my stance on Pink Floyd, the most boring band in all of rock, then this won’t either. Sucks and I hate it. Wasted pick for a band that is already well represented on the list.
